50% is a very long stretch. Although, I think most Koreans understand more English than they actually speak. Since the way they learn English prioritizes being able to remember or understand English sentences, for academic purposes, versus actually being able to produce or use English in the real world.

I used to teach Korean uni students in Manila ESL/EFL in the early 2000's. One of my students was an engineering student in Taft Ave and, when he first arrived in Manila, the only English word he knew was "hello." As the lessons are taught in English (even for engineering classes), he had to simultaneously learn English off-campus. After a few months, he's become more confident conversing in English and one of the things I remembered him sharing was that, in Korea, even if they could understand a bit of English, the locals get scared when foreigners approach them to ask/talk to them in English. That was then. With the emergence of KPOP and Kdrama in the global scene, resulting to the spike of tourism in their country in the last decade, I think more and more Koreans, esp the younger generation, have become more at ease with speaking with foreigners in English.

That being said, even if they can’t understand you very well and it’s hard to communicate most of them will try their best to help you. Though it’s obviously easier if you personally study up on their language since you’re going to their country. Don’t expect them to know perfect English if you wouldn’t be able to speak Korean to a Korean foreign asking for your help in your country. Now that's a lie. I went to South Korea & asked for help. None of them can speak English. Not even the youths. I'm not insulting them at all but based on my personal experience, I had difficulty communicating with them there.
@andreasalinas49584 ай бұрын
My experience living there for 13 months was completely different than yours. I was adventurous, so I got lost a LOT! LOL! Every single time I was lost, at least one person helped me find my way. Several times, I was lucky enough to have a group of people help me in English. Their English was pretty good too. They define spoke better English than I spoke Korean. I tried, but it's a hard language to learn. Maybe I just got extremely lucky.

Some of my Korean friends explained that often, Korean people are self-conscious speaking English in public. For one of two reasons: 1) they are afraid of getting it wrong, 2) if they are good at English, then others might think they are showing off. As others have said, most can understand English better than they can speak, but at the end of the day if you're travelling to Korea, you should definitely know SOME Korean. Even just a little bit. Attempting to speak the language shows respect and makes it easier for you to get around.

Koreans understand English. Speaking is another story. They're not confident speaking English, so compliment them when you can! Seoul, 2022 & Busan, 2024. Busan was very laid back and English accommodating. 👏👏👏

I’m Korean, and my toefl score is 102 out of 120, which is 30/30/21/21 (Reading/Listening/Speaking/Writing). I think this score is normal in Korea, which means many people are good at reading and listening but they struggle to convey their opinion in a conversation or with an essay.
