50% is a very long stretch. Although, I think most Koreans understand more English than they actually speak. Since the way they learn English prioritizes being able to remember or understand English sentences, for academic purposes, versus actually being able to produce or use English in the real world.

I lived in Japan for a year and I don’t speak a lot of Japanese, just enough to get by, and it was a struggle trying to communicate in English. English proficiency in Japan is really bad (it stems from bad English education, the textbooks are awful, I swear) But when I went to Korea for the holidays, I was surprised by how many people spoke English. And not just spoke it, but their pronunciation and vocabulary was outstanding. Not perfect by any means, but it was much easier for me to travel around Korea (with basically no Korean language skills of my own), than it was for me to be in Japan

True. I can fully understand that. In my country you get a lot of languages in school to learn. But we mostly only use English or German... Because those are the people we meet more often who speak those languages. The other languages,if you don't (have to) use it or keep it fresh, so to speak, you forget a lot about them. So, I can understand, if you don't meet English speaking people often... the English- conversation possibility fades to the background.

I used to teach Korean uni students in Manila ESL/EFL in the early 2000's. One of my students was an engineering student in Taft Ave and, when he first arrived in Manila, the only English word he knew was "hello." As the lessons are taught in English (even for engineering classes), he had to simultaneously learn English off-campus. After a few months, he's become more confident conversing in English and one of the things I remembered him sharing was that, in Korea, even if they could understand a bit of English, the locals get scared when foreigners approach them to ask/talk to them in English. That was then. With the emergence of KPOP and Kdrama in the global scene, resulting to the spike of tourism in their country in the last decade, I think more and more Koreans, esp the younger generation, have become more at ease with speaking with foreigners in English.

@@한을정-g1l actually, no. Korean is not an international language, it can only be used in Korea, so there is no point learning it as a tourist. If you want to work there, it's a different thing. I’ve been to Korea nearly every summer of my life to visit my grandparents and while I wouldn’t say 50% are fluent, they have a better grasp of the language than people give them credit for but definitely not 50/50 being fluent. That being said, even if they can’t understand you very well and it’s hard to communicate most of them will try their best to help you. Though it’s obviously easier if you personally study up on their language since you’re going to their country. Don’t expect them to know perfect English if you wouldn’t be able to speak Korean to a Korean foreign asking for your help in your country. Learn the language as best as you can to avoid the struggle even if it’s just the basics for travel. And always have a translation app at the ready (don’t rely on google translate, it’s not very helpful)

Haha Korean and English are completely different. Why do we expect native Korean speakers to speak English fluently? Some comments are so rude. When you meet someone who makes an effort to speak English, you will appreciate their kindness. And compared to Japan, a similar Asian country, Koreans speak English well.

I was there for two weeks so obviously it was only a tiny snap shot that I saw, but i have come back and told my friends that I was really surprised at how many people spoke English well. I'd also like to say I was only surprised as I don't expect everyone to learn English if it's not your main languague. I dont speak other languages well myself. (I hope that makes sense).

Some of my Korean friends explained that often, Korean people are self-conscious speaking English in public. For one of two reasons: 1) they are afraid of getting it wrong, 2) if they are good at English, then others might think they are showing off. As others have said, most can understand English better than they can speak, but at the end of the day if you're travelling to Korea, you should definitely know SOME Korean. Even just a little bit. Attempting to speak the language shows respect and makes it easier for you to get around.
