If you put that level of difficulty in a modern AAA, the reviewers ign etc would rail against it, because reviewing is 2nd or 3rd to their political agenda and identity group. They don't spend time actually playing the game tbh most aren't even interested in gaming at all, it's just the vehicle they use to spread their message. This is why games are so far left now, they're not making the games for the players but for the reviewers.

You actually have to do that in the Gamecube and Xbox versions of the game, and surprinsingly, you can do it almost as easy than here if you use the right tool or force power (In this context, Force Speed, Beam Sniper and Thermal detonators. The problem is that level design nowadays tends to be too simplistic and linear.

I think it's because of the popularization of video games. Back in the day, playing a video game wasn't a very common activity so the devs and players were more niche and could make a game that takes hours and hours to perfect and beat. Nowadays, everyone and their mother is playing games so it's got to be easier. Challenging gaming was killed by its own success...

About a year ago I decided to do a play through of F.E.A.R. 1. That game's ai stomps any and all games that are produced today. If you are hiding in cover and not moving it'll flank you in groups so you are getting pushed at the same time from different directions. If there isn't any available cover the ai will flip tables and other objects and use it for improvised cover when you ambush them. If you run away into a dead end instead of following you in like a dumbass it'll just wait for you to come out into the open and get shot. If you're sitting next to explosive barrels the ai will completely ignore shooting at you and just shoot the barrel, blowing you up (lol). There's other intelligent things that the ai is capable of doing but this is what really stuck with me.

Case in point - Crash Bandicoot NSane Trilogy, particularly Crash Bandicoot 1, where in fact the game was made much harder due to the developers Vicarious Visions translating the hitboxes from rectangular to rounded rectangular. Therefore momentum was required to make jumps which have reduced size landing points (because they prioritised Crash 3 Warped’s jumping style into all three games), something which was not implemented in the original Crash 1 and it’s platforming. The result (not my words, these are extracts from the gaming media) - “I don’t remember this game being this difficult!” “Crash is too hard!” “HIGH ROAD!!! SLIPPERY CLIMB!!! STORMY ASCENT AAAAAARGH!!!” “Crash is Dark Souls hurr durr!”

That's the reason I like the Dark Souls series so much. I know you're not exactly a fan. But for me, the satisfaction of finally beating a boss is just amazing. It doesn't bring you the victory on a silver platter. You actually have to earn it.

I'm so glad you brought up the mining shuttle part, i've been preaching for ages about how that one singular puzzle is brilliantly designed. You can figure it all out just by observing the moving pieces. All you need to do is figure out is figure out that you need to be able to ride this shuttle out and then how to make it stop killing you. Just slow down for a moment and look around and it becomes clear what you need to do. Modern games would just have a little internal voice over saying "i need to find the vent to stop this heat, maybe i should check outside".

Can confirm. Just finished Outcast last night, and holy shit was the game solid. Level design can be a little confusing at times with hidden passageways and the dated graphics didn't help either, but I've to say the combat definitely proved challenging, but felt very rewarding. Even the (spoilers) forced infused soldiers we fight proved challenging and that wasn't even a boss. The thing I also love about Outcast was the level design, what we see is where we can go to, simply put there was not alot of invisible walls like we do today.

I think one of the worst thing in games now is the quest marker, it causes you to tune out the game and you basically lose immersion.
@Gaming_Sparky58
@Gaming_Sparky58 5 жыл бұрын
I think the best way to do HUD and quest markers are using INGAME items that are believable to have been used to do that certain thing, a good game will have no HUD but still show every piece of information you need, Metro did it fairly well I think and a few others or at least it tried to make it so you're immersed while informed about your loadout and quests.

TR1 took me about 50 hours (most was working out the control systems to make jumps) but the entire level is like one big puzzle, filled with doors and areas to traverse to find keys and switches to get to new areas. It was so much fun but also frustrating to get stuck on parts for so long not knowing what to do, trying to see what I had missed but then the second you find it it's so rewarding. As a young adult, and I started gaming with the hand-holdy titles such as Uncharted, but now I'm on the learning curve of Divinity Original Sin. I've completed the "hard" game of Dark Souls, but it is nothing in comparison to Divinity. The developers don't hold your hand at all, when it comes to solving puzzles, and it forces you truly have to understand the value of gear and decisions of ability points. But the freedom of choice is immense, and it is a far deeper than majority of the other games I've played, providing a highly satisfying experience.

Look forwards to Divinity: OS2, once you hit act 2 it's an actual CHALLENGE to find the enemies that the devs wanted you to fight, instead of running face first into something level 14 that's wielding a two handed sword that can take your armor off in two hits and also wearing 3 times that amount themselves. =3 Other wonderful moments include learning the spell that allows you to move terrain modifiers, come to a certain area and see what the terrain there looks like, and then cry as you come to the realization that they will almost certainly add a puzzle/combat later on that will use a combination of both to instakill you repeatedly.

I completed Medal of Honour Allied Assault recently. There were some difficult bits caused by the none regenerating health (why not have a minimum starting health at checkpoints?), but great how you need to think and try to flank the enemy. Though it sounds like this game is way more difficult.

it isnt, you can heal by spending mana and your mana regenerate over time. Enemies can kill you pretty quickly but you can also kill them quickly by abusing force speed/lightning. the hard thing in this game come from the old school level design (quite open without any quest marker or npcs that tell you where to go, lots of enemies per level. placing enemies in advantageous position...), puzzles and platforming sections (they arent very long tho), some annoying escort missions.

As for the one where you have to switch on a ventilation system to go down a shaft : I did it without, using health pack ^^ There one thing very different now : internet. When we were stuck in a game, it wasn't as easy to find a solution to a puzzle. We had to find it ourselves. Now any game secret is reveal to every one in half a day. As for the parts that demand skill, it's clear that back in the days games were harder : hard difficulty now = normal 10 years ago.

I legitimately could not figure out some of these goddamn puzzles when I was younger. I had to watch a walkthrough for practically every level because I would get stuck on just about every single puzzle.

I 100% agree with you Mack. I completed Dark Forces last year and I got stuck so many times because I couldn't remember where to go and there is absolutely no hand holding in that game. But the main issue was that my brain was so used to being led around by the game, that I would rage quit if I got stuck for longer than 5 minutes.

I have played that game so many times, Jedi Academy too and also the first Jedi Knight in 1997, but i can't remember those parts of the game, maybe i should go back to it! I had also redone the 4 first levels of Jedi Knight 1 as a mod for Jedi Knight 2, hundreeds of hours building the levels, placing the NPC and stuff what a great time !! The first Star War game i played was Dark Forces in DOS i remember what a problem to get the sound playing correctly on an old Sound Blaster ISA card!!!

You ought to pick up the Legacy of Kain games and check them out again, particularly Soul Reaver 1 and 2. I give those games credit to improving my problem solving skills as a kid, the puzzles were SO DIFFICULT and it forced me to think about and integrate everything in my head. That and its dialogue actually motivated me to improve my speaking skills, as Kain gave me an admiration boner. Older games were amazing, because they taught you how to solve problems and think fast. Now it's learning to press a button while trying not to pass out of boredom. Great video, JK2 is fabulous, it was my favourite birthday present from mum back in the kid days.

I have terrible depth perception I couldn't lob a grenade properly ever, I usually just use them as timed mines. I don't mind an option for granade throws but I don't feel these 'helpers' need to be standard in a game should not be hard to toggle them on or off in a menu somewhere.

I agree that in linear games like this one markers should be off but in open world games there are times where the map is so vast and you have to find a small specific object. Like in fallout 3, I remember I had to pick up this item and bring it to this guy and it was in a huge base, if I didn't have a marker that simple fetch quest would've taken me half an hour or more just searching among the trash and going through every inch of that huge base.

This is why I'm subbed to this channel! You're great oldschool gamer mate! =D But I think this is only partly true. Yes, games are easier. No, I do not suffer from that. I'm almost 31. Playing from 1992. As for puzzle with train, yeah, it was kinda hard to figure out =D Replayed this game about a year ago too. When I'll have kids, I probably will try to show them 90s games first :3 P.S. New Star Wars game will probably be on rails with a lot of quick time events and scripted stuff. It already looks like that and main character doesn't feel like a Jedi. I guess when it comes out, I'll just play Jedi Knight (maybe even first one, with movie cutscenes) on stream instead...

Easy question = easy answere. The general customer has an expected concentration level of 15 min. If the game demands your skill and effort 90% of players Will stop playing. And the Company often wants to invest in a live-service market. Now if you read so far, do the math and figure out the rest.

Mac, when we started to play games (I take it we're of similar age), games were made by hopeless nerds for hopeless nerds. And this is why games were good, you could see someone putting his or hers heart and soul in this game. And games were epic. Fast forward 25-30 years and today games are mainstream. Everybody is playing them. And developers are no longer some nerds in their parents' bedroom, they are huge corporations, mostly interested in the shareholders happiness and revenue. And since they want to please the average Joe, who is a bit more skilled than a brain dead turtle - games are made easy to ridiculous extent...

Not only that these games today are more like interactive movies than games. They are there to push a story not gameplay. And most of the time the story itself is dumbed down and you can spot shit a mile away before it happens. Everything today is designed for short attention spans and instant gratification. No more do you have to develop skills or use your brain to solve problems. That's why games are mostly shit now days. And they are designed to be consumed rather than played again and again. I still play classic Doom I doubt I'll ever play 2016 Doom as much as I played the classic.

The worst part is...getting stuck on a level today (like that swamp example) isn't even such a big issue anymore. If you get too frustrated with a level you are always just a simple alt+tab and a quick google search away from finding hundreds of tutorials (both in written and in video form) to help you out. So really there is no excuse.
