Great video - I am a 59 year old women that has been insulin resistant for many years. While my A1c has always been normal, I have had years of problems like pcos, gestational diabetes, always carrying an extra 20 pounds on me etc. I decided about a year ago to once and for all get healthy. I have worn a cgm on/off the last year and am amazed by how certain things - besides the food I am eating - have affected my blood sugar. The part of this video that really hit home for me was saying that you don’t have to incorporate everything all at once - don’t wait until you think you have time to do it all. I started slow with fasting and told myself that I would allow myself some grace and work on things as I learned what was needed. I believe I am at the hardest part of my journey - managing stress. All the fasting in the world - exercising - sleeping well etc - doesn’t seem to make my body work 100% well unless I manage my stress. This part of my journey is so hard - but I am determined to enter the last few decades of my life reversing the damage I have done and figuring out how to live a healthy lifestyle. Thanks for the valuable information - I have watched, listened and read so much over the last year, but am amazed by how much I can still learn. Please know that both of you are doing great work!!!

Listen to Eckhart Tolle, he is a godsend! He shows us the way to have a peaceful, calm mind...😊 His I terview with Oprah years ago, walks thru the chapters n of his book " The Power of Now". He has a very calm manner and helps us slow down our breathing... which calms our nervous system and allows the belly to expand, bringing oxygen deep into our lungs. When we breathe shallowly into only the upper lung area, our brains are deprived of oxygen and we feel anxious. 😮 A nice walk outdoors in nature, even if only around the block allows our mind and body to find Peace and feel connected to the Earth which is very calming...🚶🏼‍♂️ Anytime you feel anxious or stressed, take a few moments to consciously breathe into your belly thru your nose. Place your hand on your belly so you feel it rise. Hold your breath for a count of 8, then slowly blow it out thru your mouth for a slow count of 8 or 10. Repeat 3- 5 times as needed. Namaste 🙏🏻 🤲🏻 🕊

My A1C at diagnosis 4.5 years ago when i was admitted to the ICU for a blood infection was 12.8 (BG 475) I was off meds and got my number down to 5.1 in about 5-6 months. After a year off meds and maintaining that level, my doctor removed the diagnosis from my chart. My last test was last week, and I clocked in at 4.8. T2D can be defeated.

@jac1161 I was not on steroids, no. With an A1C of 12.8, it was the opposite of being caught early. I had likely been insulin resistant for 15 years or more. I've seen a lot of people who have turned it around regardless of how long since diagnosis. It doesn't have to be progressive.

@dporrasxtremeLS3 In a nutshell, I reduced my carb intake to 20-30g per day total. No more than 12 at any meal and 3 meals or less per day. I completely eliminated grains, rice, legumes, potatoes and nearly all fruits outside of berries, avocado and olives. I also eliminated seed/vegetable oils. Plenty of meat and healthy fats and some non-starchy vegetables. After the carb cravings passed, I don't usually eat more than 2 meals per day and it's usually more like 1.5. I also stopped snacking.

I'm prediabetic and have paid out of pocket to wear a CGM, and while I could see my glucose go down due to my food choices, my A1c barely moved down from 6.0 to 5.9. So, I would beg to differ that insulin resistance goes down immediately and from all the literature I've read, it takes many months for this to happen. It is clearly due to the many elements that play a role in insulin resistance, and with that I do agree with you. The frustration is in solving for the unknown when you've done all the "right" things like eating well, exercising and getting enough sleep. I am still working on it but it truly has taken the kind of perseverance that most people just don't have, especially when the medical community and insurance companies will cover costs for diabetics only.

I think Dr Berg mentioned those that exercised heavily every day had elevated cortisol levels, and then didn't lose weight. So he suggested exercizing 3x a week. And resting! And the weight loss happened. Hit a note with me - I exercised every day for 5 months, lost 1 solo little pound. But changed it to walks, 4 or so times a week, casual ones w baby on backpack and lost 56 lbs is 3 months. Also, I was drinking carbonated water with squeezed lemon juice. Boom....That was a long time ago, I was young, but this does make sense! Quit stressing physically too.

I control my insulin resistance though diet... Keto/ low carb. I dropped over 35 lbs to a "normal weight" 167lbs. I stopped taking my insulin and am no longer considered diabetic per the numbers. The formula is really this easy, " just don't eat sugar or carbs" then you won't get the after meal sugar spikes that damage the body. Example meal: chicken breast and onions and a salad with some blueberries in it.

For me it's absolutely a mindset issue. I comfort myself when I get: anxious, stressed, bored, monthly's, sugar/chocolate cravings, celebrations, "survival" mode... Instead of going to, God's, Word as a Christian. I have comforted myself with food all my life. Which is what I've been trying to change, which is difficult to have the discipline to do it. But, I know it's important to respect the borrowed body that I do not own.

I like how she stressed the importance of practicing gratitude. But I’d like to add that how you deliver that message, especially to children is very important. If you gently remind them to examine their actions and reflect on whether or not their actions and reactions are gracious and redirect them on how they can make better choices - that’s good. But if you send a message like, “I sacrifice/ do so much for you and this is how you repay me?” This can lead to feelings of guilt and in worse cases if done repeatedly, self-loathing. This in turn can cause stress, raise cortisol and lead to emotional eating. So it’s a nuanced matter.

I like how she talks about our relationship to food. We tie food into so many aspects of our lives. Holidays, celebrations, traditions, and as she mentioned sometimes using food to make ourselves or our loved ones feel better by giving them a sweet treat for example when they feel bad. That’s why comfort foods are called such. They often remind us of home or a parent’s cooking, etc. But another thing to keep in mind is that sugar has the effect on the brain like drugs. We get a dopamine hit. So we need to rethink for example using food as rewards. It’s important to have an awareness of our relationship with food. Food addiction (mainly to sugars) and emotional eating can be quite a struggle because we must eat to live, so ultimately you must address these issues if you want to regain or maintain health.

I just want to say "thank you" for the good information you are giving! I thought I would share what I have done that has helped me tremendously. I am now 65 years old and playing ice hockey two sometimes three times a week. I am probably in the best shape of my entire life! In April of 2020 I had to have a large growth growing behind my left eye! They had to cut out some of my orbital bone in order to get it out! As a result of the surgery it damaged some of the nerves and muscles in my left eye!! I still have double vision but my peripheral vision has improved. I realized that I needed to improve my lifestyle choices. I started walking 3 to 5 mi a day. Then I started doing what I love to do so I started rollerblading. This is a good exercise for good balance and strengthening your core muscles. Then as I started requiring more physical demands on my body I realize I needed to improve my eating habits! Like you said I started eating wholesome food and eliminating process and ultra-processed food. I started adding more exercises into my regiment by calisthenics and lightweight resistance training. I started feeling a lot better!! A "very good friend of mine who helped motivate me said "why don't you start playing the ice hockey again!! I decided to join a men's hockey league for 50 and older. I realize that there are many adult men and women who are well into their 50s that are in great shape! I thought I would mention I went from 192 lb to 170 lbs which was my weight when I was in my twenties!

Biology is so specific to the individual that is why you see so many unique outliers. There are so many factors- I think the program failed to acknowledge that when folks experienced a reduction in sugar and yet their sugars went up and they were given more sugar to get back to their personal baseline, this was more than likely caused by a physical reaction in the brain which had an instant calming affect on the individuals, which probably led to a reduction in cortisol. I also believe exercise is the key in all of this.

I have been telling doctors for at least a decade that I think I have insulin resistance. I’m now 57 and had a major heart attack a year ago after having no known issues other than becoming increasingly overweight. I was an athlete growing and into my mid 20’s. A complete tear of the ACL in my left knee and losing 40% of my meniscus left me unable to play active sports at 25. The doctors would always say your A1C is fine, so you don’t have insulin resistance.

The gut health is an interesting tangent. I've gone carnivore/animal based for an autoimmune disease, tried probiotics and got super sick (like the flu). Turns out, for those with histamine intolerance, bacteria and fiber can make symptoms worse. Cutting that out, and eating more meat (which might have helped raise my DAO) helped. Still figuring out the stress and sleep thing though 😓

@@joanneclark8256 I can't say for sure if fiber was causing a histamine response, or if foods that are high in fiber just tend to have more histamine in them, or if fiber was truly a culprit to point a finger at, but I feel great without it and whenever I used to eat fibrous foods I would feel sharp stomach pains and break out in hives (I tried going plant based, moving away from processed foods thinking I was doing my body good). I had severe urticaria every day for years; all my soft tissues and joints would swell, sometimes my eyes would swell shut and I couldn't walk on my feet or bend my wrists or elbows. It was confirmed to be high histamine because high histamine foods like alcohol would make my symptoms ramp up, and antihistamines would calm them down to an extent (but not much). I had a biopsy and had an overproduction of mast cells, so they were thinking something along the lines of mastocytosis but no one knew for sure (they said probably just stress lol). I went keto for a couple years and all my hives went away with the exception of coming back whenever I got sick. Fast forward a couple years of keto and getting into bodybuilding; I was doing a lot of extreme sports, running marathons and stuff, and got a spinal injury that just never healed and turned into spinal arthritis. I lost my mobility completely and it wasn't until I went carnivore that I started improving, and taking immunosuppressants helped me fully recover. Now I'm just animal based, weaning off of the biologics and hoping the suppressants were enough of a reset for a solid diet to carry me through remission. But to answer your question, no I never had PCOS or insulin resistance

The flu is also caused by lack of electrolytes as well as poor transition. You can't go from eating everything to eating meat over a day. You have to slowly transition by increasing meat and decreasing other things. I did it during a 3 week periodo and still lost 4 pounds and I had zero flu.

I decided to slowly go plant based and cut out all the processed foods, thinking I was doing my body good, but started getting stomach pains and severe hives to the point where all my soft tissues and joints would swell - my eyes would get swollen shut and I couldn't bend my knees or elbows or walk on my feet because of how big the hives were. This happened every day for years and doctors just attributed it to stress or allergies lol; had a biopsy and one doctor labeled it mastocytosis. It happened over such a long period of time it was hard to pinpoint what the cause was. It wasn't until I tried keto for a couple years (balancing more of the plants with healthy fats and eggs) that all my hives went away. They would only come back whenever I got sick. But then I got a spinal injury, and it just never healed. It got so bad and morphed into spinal arthritis (ankylosing spondylitis is the official label). I became completely disabled (needed a care provider to do the most basic human tasks). Started carnivore and saw improvement, and eventually took biologic immunosuppressants to fully regain my mobility. After 2 years of carnivore and biologics, I'm weaning off the injections and hoping that an animal based diet can carry me through a long remission. I had to drop heavy cream and the ‘fun cheeses’ like Brie as even these were triggering me to overeat them. Carnivore really helps those who have had disordered eating or struggle with cravings. I’m now very happy just with my butter coffee, thankfully only took a few days for the cravings to pass. The more some of us limit the foods we eat, the more freeing it is (even if it seems counterintuitive).

Keep in mind the toxic effects of sugar with your mitochondria and gut health. That shuts down your cellular health, suppressing the feelings of inflammation or pain, at the expense of cell damage, excess glucose, and alcohol without the high, just the incompetence/brain fog. Pushing you to “unplug from stress by over-stressing your body (inflammation). Sabotaging your ability to deal with stress, leading you to avoidance and procrastination/denial of energy and creativity. Try as you will, you will not be able to be all you can be. Fix the carb overdose and discover a better and longer lived life. Sustainable happiness despite the same roadblocks that used to block your success. Now they become the opportunity for change and joy. And witness your peers who do not take this path fall victim to the chronic killers of your generation. While you enjoy the “good fortune” of a healthy life. 🖖🏼

I am now trying to put back in some carbs and add iodine to my diet but so far I haven't experienced any thing much. My hypoglycemic symptoms have gotten a little better. I am dealing with oxalate dumping and it doesn't take much to increase my cortisol so I keep exercise very low key. My sleep is terrible. Honestly, I don't know where to go from here. I do keep a gratitude journal and try to thank God for all of His many gifts, especially the little ones no one else might notice. To fat adapt you need to eat more fat than protein. You will have to add fat to your meals. Your bloodsugar has to be under 5 mmol for the most time. Ketones over 1.5. And you will adapt. If your sugar is higher decrase protein intake to 0.8 g per lean body mass. Can take a few weeks to adapt and you will feel like shite when your bloodsugar drops under 5. Or you could temporary go low carb high fat meaning 100g of carbs and get yourself sorted abit before you try to get fat adapted.

I was surprised that it didn't really go higher than like 150 and my avg is 130.... i was surprised when it would immediatly spike when i ate some sugar. I found out because i was going into dangerously low blood sugar alarm and when that happened i knew that i dont want heart attack etc or some other organ failure (i currently have 4 partially failed organs that are medically unexplained/no help for them.) i ate some sugar and it immediately started going up..... i thought it had to digest? so must be my liver cranking some emergency sugar out/wasting of muscles.... anyway my sugar spikes in my sleep also another surprise.
