Do transgender athletes have a competitive advantage over cisgender athletes?

As transgender people continue their fight to be accepted for who they are, more states are taking action to stand in their way. According to the ACLU, 31 states have considered bills this year that would ban transgender youth from competing in school sports.
At Verify, we've received a lot of questions on this topic. Specifically - whether transgender girls actually have an advantage over cisgender girls in athletics as some of these bills claim.

CBS on how to give the impression that you're engaging in responsible reporting: - Vaguely ID the debate with either a borderline strawman or over simplify the opposition (in this case, anti transgender athletes) - Carefully make negative implications towards the side that won't react as strongly - Bring on researchers to support only one side of the issue. My question has to do with hormone therapy. As far as I'm aware, transgenders aren't required to undergo hormone therapy. The "researchers", if we can call them that, seem to make the implication that trans athletes do. So, are they required to? The quoted laws don't make an indication. So, why did CBS even bring it up? And what about muscle and bone structure differences? So many questions unanswered.

If trans people want to compete in sports, get a separate category for those people. Then they can race have fair races with other trans people. Can trans have their own whatever “sports league” for them so they can compete amongst themselves? We have Womens, Men’s, Special Olympics. We have separation for reasons when it comes to sports. But please can we not mix and think it’s okay or pretend this is okay. The point of the matter is that they just want to feel included in the something (ie sports for this matter). It’s now going onto other things that we need to look at and take into consideration for the sole basis of how they feel what; about those other players and how they feel? when they have to compete with a trans person? This is not a factual statement, only my opinion.

Nobody's banning transgender students of competing in sports! They're just banning them from competing against children of which were born of a different gender. My daughter is tiny compared to the other girls her age. God forbid, if she had to compete against students that were born as "boys"? What about her rights?
