After dropping about $375 on an airbrush and compressor (badger extreme patriot and badger compressor)I find that it’s a hassle to clean and I can get nearly the same results drybrushing with medium/ large makeup brushes. It gets used to prime minis 99% of the time now. I’m glad I have it in my arsenal but I don’t use it nearly as much as I thought I would.

Their is no shortage of good airbrushes for 50 US or less, compressors 100 ish . Only the modeller can decide if its worth it. One piece of advice , start with alcahol based paints , Tamiya X and XF very easy to start , avoid true acrylics (water or own thinner) to start.

What do you want? the airbrush to clean itself? Just as you sucked the first time when you dry brushed, keep trying the airbrush. You will get there way less time when you get good at it.

I'll second the Patriot 105 for an excellent entry-level airbrush has a lot of utility and will still be useful if you end up down the rabbit hole of airbrushing. You want some quality in your first airbrush without going overboard on price, and with the stock 0.5mm needle/nozzle it's perfect for priming, pre-shading/highlighting, basecoats and final varnish coats. You can get a finer needle/nozzle (0.3mm) to upgrade for minimal cost if you want to start experimenting with more details before taking the plunge into a higher-end airbrush for really tight detail work.

I don´t paint figures but i am a scale Model Builder (mostly planes 1/72 and 1/48) and an Airbrush i a MUST! Also started with brush Painting, but with an Airbrush, the paint is much smoother, and the most important in scale building: you don´t totally cover up all the details like rivets, panel lines... Started with cheap china airbrushes to learn and get familiar with it, now i have a H&S Silverline and i just love that thing!

After years with a Pistol grip Neo, I purchased the Badger Renegade Krome, wow what a difference! However, I then went down the rabbit hole of buying Badger and Paasche airbrushes, because they are both USA made. Don't rule out single action airbrushes! Go back and look at model aircraft from the 50s-80s, all the camouflage was usually done with either a Badger or Paasche single action, they're more versatile than you think!

I've seen people who spray their miniatures one right after the other and wait for them to dry but some speed up the process by using a hair dryer. You could easily get the army pictured airbrushed and ready for detail within a several hours with the details taking the rest of the time using this method.

I can't speak for the Badger, but I would never recommend a beginner to start with the Iwata Neo. It was my first airbrush and it was nothing but headaches and frustration for me. The price stands in this awkward middle ground between the cheap, yet serviceable Amazon kit brushes, and the MUCH more capable Iwata Eclipse HP-CS. If you don't want to spend a lot out of the gate, I would grab one of the Amazon kits that already comes with the recommended compressor.

One thing that you didn't touch on is Zenithal Highlighting, airbrushes EXCEL at this, although I have seen it done with rattle cans (just not as smooth transitions). Zenithal Highlighting combined with airbrushing very thin glazes will shake your painting world to its foundation. Not only does it provide incredibly smooth transitions, it is INCREDIBLY fast to do! As a wargamer I will have large blocks of similar models to paint up (let's say Stormtroopers), with Zenithal Highlighting I cut the time to paint them by at least 75%. Before you ask, a Vallejo Light Grey Primer + a few drops of Vallejo White Primer from the bottom, then a white ink from the top. Cover that with a clear gloss (let dry overnight), then brush a flat black where needed, any mistakes use a moist hobby Q-tip to remove them. Panel lines on their armor, I use a 0.05 illustration pen keeping a moist hobby Q-tip on hand to fix any problems. Also, I keep the helmet, arms/weapons and backpacks separate to paint. :)

Great video- I also went the Amazon special -> Neo route and I still use the Neo. Its great for the price! The only thing I would suggest is that starting out, go for the Amazon special pump that has the built in Tank. It's not much more than the basic one, takes up the same amount of floor/desk space, and doesn't run constantly.

The best compressor money can buy is the "SIL-AIR 20A", it's "Made In Europe" by an over 40yr old compressor-company, and is made of a refrigerator compressor, which means it's slightly louder than a whisper at 30db max. (A whisper is about 30 dB, normal conversation is about 60 dB) It has an built in Tank, a Water separator and Regulator = All you need.

I started with a cheap Chinese gun, worked well enough to learn how to prime and pre-shade, rarely clogged, easy enough to strip and clean. Then a friend gave me his Iwata Neo after he upgraded, it's nice, better than the Chinese one by far. Since then I picked up a PS270 by Mr Hobby and it's mindblowingly good.... I prefer it to my friend's H&S infinity, and it was half the price.... Can't recommend the brand enough

I think I need to invest in one, not only do I want to get better at painting my WH40k models..once I finally figure out exactly which army I want..toss up between Orks, Ta'u, or Militarum..but I also do standard kits like tanks and planes for just military hobby kits..among my much more established gunpla hobby..an airbrush would help with the tanks and planes quite a bit.

My advice: Buy one of the dirt-cheap airbrushes to start with. KKMoon are not bad at all for the price, and for larrger models even the very cheapest will do; I bought an airbrush for £6 that works well enough for simple jobs. Buy a cheap set of spare needles (you WILL damage a couple) and give them a buff-polish with a nail buffer. Tip: Always put the thinner or flow improver in the hopper _before_ the paint. Way less clogging.

Good video. I bought a Neo for Iwata a few years ago in a bundle that came with a mask and a very crappy compressor (I think in another life it might have been used for fish tanks). I could never really get into it - it needed a lot of space, so every time I wanted to use it everything had to be set up and cleared away, I never got the hang of painting consistently with it (sometimes it would be fine, other times splotchy or too thin), and the cleanup got a bit irritating. I ended up getting an H&S Evolution, and it is a much nicer airbrush, but I think a lot of my initial enthusiam has gone. That said, I wouldn't mind seeing you demonstrate airbrush techniques (I never got beyond basecoating), it might tempt me to try it again.

As someone who came back into painting models after about 18 years and decided to start with Contrast paints, I'm very tempted to pick up an airbrush. Contrast paints just seem to have such a high learning curve. They make every brush stroke feel like calligraphy.

An airbrush is a tool, you CAN get by without it. Some pros haven't ever touched one, but its simply a tool that gives you options and can save time. My advice: buy a good compressor, the TC-326T by Master (get the model with the tank, thank me later) and a cheap airbrush. Master sells them for $20 bucks and you will get a beater airbrush that you can break and learn on. I've been using mines for a few years for basic zennithal, priming and terrain. I've broken the tip once and learned what not to do with the airbrush. Then move on to stuff like the Iwata or Harder and Steenbeck. Badger is tried and true, but if you're going to move from the cheap $20 airbrushes, just skip to the intermediate models.

Got back into the hobby after quite a few years away, got into 15mm armies and this time I had that all important requirement every hobbyist needs...cash.... and a good lump of it went on an airbrush compressor set up that I really got into and used possibly a dozen times. Like you point out, parts and pieces, the disassembly, cleaning, reassembly,thininning mixing and everything else that goes with it, not for me.....I knows and understands my brushes and paints and I'll stick with what I know, much more enjoyable......

Thx for the video. I also started with the Neo but it didn‘t served me so well. Got a lot of clogging, despite thinning my paints. Asembly was ok, but I did not like the tiny nozzle, where you have to unscrew it with a tool. Also I disliked on the Neo was controll of the color amount leaving the brush, I‘ll never find the sweetspot and often spilled to much color to the model. Sure many things a problems due to my lack of experience but overall the Neo felt not so good for me. I sold mine for a good price and changed to an H&S Evolution 2&1 it‘s cost around 50-70€ more the the Neo but I think it‘s worth it. The controll is finer, you have a screw to limit the color amount, no tools for asembley needed, two needle sizes and the posibilty to change needles from 0.6 to 0.15. The needles a compatible to the Infintiy, so if you want to upgrade, just buy the Infinty with one needle, cause you can use the needles from the Evolution. I suggest for a beginner buy an H&S Evolution, even if you dislike airbrushing, if you take good care of the airbrush, you can sell it with minimal loss and if you like airbrushing you git a rock solid gun with upgrade potential. PS: How do you kill your nozzles?

My 2c if you're not getting a neo for sale just spend the extra 20-30 on a badger patriot 105 or paasche talon. Neos are made for iwata not by iwata. That said the name iwata definately means something so they will stand behind it if youre having issues

How can a brush be used to create professional results? I used brushes since I was 12 and since then learned about thinning my brush, dry bushing, and watered down shadow technique. I always have to fight against putting brush grains on to the surface and check my brushes for possible loose hairs. I also learned that red sable hairs are the best than nylon. Do you have a pro tip video or advice for advance brushing? How do you mask off areas? thanks

If you're finding Citadel's paint pots a little too easy to knock over (especially the shades, I swear my desk is now covered in more ink than vanish), have a look for a pot holder. I found some 3D printed ones on eBay about three years ago (these were about £3 each, sorry, no idea of that in dollars) and it's easily made the cost back from not having to replace spilled paint. I ended up buying one for each of my friends and they swear by it (except for that one friend, but I think she was more pissed that I didn't ask her to print them).

That polyurethane primer is worth getting an airbrush for in my opinion. Such a nice surface to paint and won't leave you light headed working inside with it. Even if you just buy the cheapest ebay thing you can find just being able to prime alone is worth it.

I think most of our first airbrush is the one that comes with our compressor. If you plan to get your 1st Airbrush and you are considering the Iwata Neo and if you live in the US, I say spend ~$100 and buy the GSI Creos PS-289 (0.3mm) from SprayGunner.com. This is a beast of an airbrush, its performance is at its worst on par with Iwata Hi-Line. Unlike the Iwata Neo that is manufactured by I think China/Taiwan for Iwata, the GSI Creos is manufactured in the same facility as Iwata Airbrushes so the quality is as good as Iwata.

I've been airbrushing miniatures and mostly t shirts for years. I've even totally worn out my favorite airbrush an old Vega 3000 gravity feed, now no longer made. But I have an old tankless compressor and it's loud being very old. Do they make those cordless ones just to put on any airbrush? All I've seen are ones that come with the airbrush and I already have 2 , a gravity feed and siphon feed types.

You absolutely don't need to buy a branded airbrush as your beginner airbrush. Buy a cheap one, buy some jewelry polish and some Ear q tips and clean the needle. There will be a lot of black that comes off, when the needle is clean the airbrush will work like a dream.

Never damaged a nozzle. H&S nozzles IMO are way better than a lot of competetors who have the tiny screw in nozzles that are so easy to break. I have a super cheap chinese tankless compressor and run it in my loft above the kids bedrooms and they dont hear it. H^S Sliverline is a great mid-range airbrush, with a 0.4 and 0.2 nozzle and needle setup.

I don't know about Jay, but I often clean my airbrush in the sink - you've just got to be careful not to drop any parts down the drain! I take off the back of the airbrush, loosen the needle and run some water through the hopper. If I've used primer, I give it a full clean. Most of the time I can just spray some water or thinner through to purge the airbrush for the next colour, but if I'm going from a very dark colour to a light colour or the airbrush is clogging, I'll wash it out properly.

Wow. While watching your video I picked up on an interesting thing you do, removing the paint from a bottle with the back of the paintbrush. For me, this seems to be the biggest cause of me killing my paintbrushes by accidentally getting paint into the ferrule. I will use this and no longer screw my brushes. Thanks.

I airbrush a LOT, pretty much everything, actually. I am semi-disabled, so the airbrush, for me, is essential, and I have been using them for decades. The info in this video is spot on, and very informative to those looking to get into airbrushes. On to my setup! I use a Fortress 1 gallon "ultra quiet" industrial type from Harbor Freight. was about 120 USD, the same rough cost of a standard hobby compressor. I would say the most important thing to consider with compressors is that HAS to be "oil less". My most used brushes are both badgers, a patriot 105 with the fine nozzle set, and a SOTAR 20/20 "slim" (no cup) for finer stuff. I love the badgers for several reasons; they are relatively inexpensive here in the U.S., the replacement parts are super cheap, and available, quality is high and they operate pretty smoothly. The Iwata Neo is a bit more complicated mechanically than the 105, so I would recommend the 105 as the best starter brush.

I like the Iwata brand of airbrushes although the "NEO"carries the Iwata name it is made FOR Iwata and not made BY Iwata and really does not represent the quality and Craftsmanship of a true Iwata made brush. I realize Iwata wanted a brush within the Neo price point but honestly I think they hurt the perception of the brand with new airbrushers buying a Neo and think it accurately represents the quality and tolerances of the better Iwatas. In my opinion if a person want to buy an Iwata move up to an Eclipse at least that is a true Iwata unit made by Iwata.

I'm still airbrushing noob but it takes practice :D It really speeds up when you are for example painting 40 ork boyz and you spray them green (later on I finish it with normal brush anyway). But even basecoating so fast makes it good deal. Still My airbrush clogs, sometimes spits paint (when I try to use it with very gentle for detail). I guess that I'm still not good with thinning paints :D I'm using H&S ultra bought from second hand. Needle might be damaged (when cleaning it with tissue it sometimes get's hooked near the part of needle which stays in nozzle). Still airbrush is good stuff :D

Noticed you didn’t cover the little handheld compressors... is that because they don’t really work? I have a very limited hobby space I need to pack up between sessions so the handhelds look attractive from that perspective... but if they don’t work...

You dont need the Infinity. Get the Silverline 2in1. They are nearly identical and even use the same parts.

Never had an airbrush couldn't do all that cleaning, setting up and more cleaning, my models do get a coat from a rattle tin but then its 000 paint brush

Yeah, the cleaning looks like a killer. As does the mask wearing and other nonsense. Oh well, just bought an airbrush in the Black Friday sales - only took me three years to finally get over my reluctance.

I paint on glass, it cleans easily, I do any building and gluing on a self healing cutting mat. with airbrushing their is a little overspray so if your right next to a wall you probably want to put up something in between.

Hi Mate, honest question: Why do we need to talk (and argue) about if we need or need no airbrushes as soon as we go from scale - into tabletop modelling? I mean first thing ppl realy into scale models are buying is a airbrush - we can't do without (or have to use enaml paints) to get good results. As soon as we take the (very) small step over into tabletop, this basic tool becomes an alien - at least that's what it feels for me looking from the (not so far) outside of my hobby into yours?! BTW I took the same route of products into H&S ; )

I never actually argued in the video (although my tile was quite inflammatory) I just left it at airbrushes are great and very useful but you don't HAVE to use one.

Got the cheapest airbrush I could find. I absolutely loved it, but now it won't spit paint for more than a couple seconds at a time. I can't even figure out what's wrong with it. Was looking at the neo iwata to upgrade to a better brush

Sounds like you have a blockage. Have you tried soaking it overnight in a airbrush cleaner. You might need to remove the o ring.

@@liesureleeminis8268 it depends on your model. But you will usually have one in the air valve. Do not submerge the valve. If you can unscrew and remove the valve. You'll often have another one near/around the nozzle. Most airbrush have instructions as to how to safely soak in them in their manual/online.

usually yes, I have used vallejo air primer with middling results but I have had good success with badger stynylrez primer.

you may want to move your screen out of the splash zone, or put something in between just in case.

Oy yoy yoy! I would keep it your airbrush least a metre from your screen, preferably more. Fine spray will simply waft over on the slightest draft or even if you breathe heavily. You’ll probably notice your walls changing colour too.

DO NOT USE BOTTLE AIR! The amount of can air needed will cost as much as a cheap air compressor. The second problem is controlling the air pressure on the bottle, there is usually all on or off.

I have no idea, I have never used one. I would guess they are not good enough quality, they probably work well for cake decoration or paint on paper or canvas but for minis you need the fine control of an air regulator.
