In this video we’re going to go over the 17 common signs of mental illness in adults, adolescents, and young children. These symptoms are things everyone experiences at different time, but they become a part of mental health illnesses when they are intense, prolonged, and cause socioeconomic dysfunction. Learning about these symptoms in yourself or your adolescent or young children will help you stop them, so you can seek out appropriate treatment.
1. Extreme worrying or fear
2. Feeling extremely sad or down
3. Disorganized thinking or difficulties concentrating and learning
4. Intense mood changes, including overwhelming “highs” or feelings of euphoria
5. Sustained or intense feelings of irritability or anger
6. Avoiding friends and social activities
7. Difficulties understanding or relating to other people
8. Changes in sleeping habits or feeling tired and low energy
9. Changes in eating habits such as increased hunger or lack of appetite
10. Changes in sex drive
11. Difficulty distinguishing reality (delusions or hallucinations, in which a person experiences and senses things that don't exist in objective reality)
12. Lack of ability to recognize changes in one’s own feelings, behavior or personality (“lack of insight” or lack of ability to perceive the realities of one's own condition)
13. Overuse of alcohol or drugs
14. Multiple physical complaints without obvious causes (such as headaches, stomach aches, vague and ongoing “aches and pains”)
15. Thinking or planning self-harm
16. An intense distress of weight gain or concern with appearance
17. Lack of ability to carry out daily activities or handle daily problems and stress
Mental health conditions can also begin to develop in those before adolescence. Because they’re still learning how to identify and talk about thoughts and emotions, their most observable symptoms are behavioral. Symptoms in children may include the following, begin at 26:32:
• Changes in school performance
• Extreme worry or anxiety, for instance fighting to avoid bed or school
• Hyperactive behavior
• Recurrent nightmares
• Recurrent disobedience or aggression
• Recurrent temper tantrums

You are such a knowledgeable, empathetic, clinically experienced psychologist, yet I am sick of seeing Jordan Peterson's face everywhere instead of yours. There's no justice in the world.
@watcherwlc53
@watcherwlc53 3 жыл бұрын
Dr Fox really focuses on being a psychologist and the mental health needs people have. Jordan Peterson switched fields and became (formally or informally I'm not sure) some kind of political philosopher--but also Peterson generally seems to try to cultivate an image of having expertise in every topic he takes an interest in, or every hot political topic of the day, then leading it all somehow to vague but highly resentful politically oriented ramblings... whereas, by contrast, Dr Fox has a wholly different approach with his energy: Dr Fox demonstrates his expertise as a mental health professional by gearing his presentations around patient care, self help, and real life mental health needs.

I have ALL of the 17 signs of BPD pretty bad. I'm 44 yrs old and I only found out about 1 year ago that's what I have. I used to look for it online thinking it might be bipolar but that didn't fit 100% with what I was feeling. But when I saw BPD symptoms it's like a light switch came up. I still haven't gone to my doctor because I am ashamed of not having gone sooner and worry what she is going to think of me and also I'm wondering if medication would actually improve or not. The word here is AFRAID of what people are going to think.

I wish this video could have come out 10 years ago when I was in college. Its odd finally hearing all of the things I've felt internally being so succinctly described. I used to bash my self so heavily for not being as social and energetic and connected as others. I just thought I wasn't trying hard enough which would send me into a perpetual cycle of self hate and trying to push though the social withdrawal, reading and writing issues, and anger. So glad I am getting treatment finally.

Just initiated (not even started) a family consultation as I was advised to better call it instead of family therapy and I'm really looking forward to that, especially to help the kids cope with our somewhat recent breakup. Now after watching this video I'm hoping even more to find help there. We've got psychological issues involved in several members, me and at least one of our sons seem to have a tendency to Asperger's, so it's sometimes hard to understand the deeper levels of communication, especially as another kid and my ex tend to be very emotional at times which usually leaves us possible aspies baffled and surely behave less than optimal from time to time. There are issues but it's going to get better hopefully. At least there's light at the end of the tunnel!

Can only back that. Even as a T1 diabetic and even though that's contrary to what my doc advises it's way way better (have to adapt a bit, though). Due to this and a few other things I can only recommend to also think for yourself. Don't overestimate your abilities, especially on meds, but a bit of experimentation with food and exercise seldom does any harm as long as you're honest to yourself and you don't just do something but see it as an experiment. Try it out, see what happens, if it has a negative effect, leave it.

What do you think it is ? 30-35 years ago she told me that she admired her father so much that she used to hide under the table so he won't bit her up . So I told her its fear not admiration , still during all the years the were at home she abused all her kids, hitting them / bittint them up & talking to them in a very critical negative ways .

My precious wife definitely has BPD. But it is so vexing for her to gain the understanding she needs to learn how to recognize and deal with the maladaptive thought processes. I'm doing all the research I can to try to overcome this from a standpoint of understanding how to deal with the mood swings and delusional Behavior. I'm really trying to understand it's like when she gets triggered it's like there's somebody abusing her but it's not real. I don't know how to address this really. I have a good enough understanding about this disorder to not let it affect me and to just love her through it but is there a way for her to get healing from this without the dressing it directly

To Improperly Labeled Loser, I think that you have brought up a very interesting set of differences to discuss for the doctor. Reassurance in our society is in short supply and I tend to think that our society is over- psycholagised! Which is not a word but one that I made up. Too many amateur , non objective, or in a hurry to put a lable on it. If the home environment is stable then things can be optimal in most cases. Many environments babies grow up in are not. Abuse is not reported and under-reported. Many parents do not have the psychological tools to navigate the great demands of parenthood. Many of them had one or more parents and siblings who were allowed to abuse the baby , or child, and it is not stopped or curtailed in any way. So the individual grows up in an unstable, unsafe environment. Somatic illness is the outcome in the very young. The doctor knows how common this is. Will the doctor check the environment? Probably not. Something is wrong obviously! So how many years ago by with no hope in sight that help will come! Too many usually and people , parents, siblings, will not likely admit to their wrongdoing and it can always be blamed on the victim. Usually this is the case. No one is a loser. But no one gets to win all the time either. Reassurance and hope is so important. Stable people a must. Who is going to intervene? Skilled practitioners who posses a degree of objectivity. Ability to put their own bias aside. Getting a therapist who is a good fit who is interested in the family healing not just the individual. The family has to be willing to change and be good to each other

I think recognizing that these are issues for you is an important first step. The next would be to find adaptive strategies to take the place of the maladaptive ones. I wish you all the best.

Okay ppl.. Calm down...some.of you here are getting really triggered...he is talking about an umbrella of symptoms...that you DO develop by being exposed to the world and life (ilness, bad people, parents, stressors, trauma, hormones etc).

I already ask my doctor and as Long as whoever "Dave" is who spies on me via KZbin and uses Bird robot drones to follow me around town, as long as he's not asking for money, nudes, sex or access to my house or account numbers/pin #/Bank account, then mostly I'm just regular level of crazy. (And I talk to myself openly even in public just for fun)

A lot of what you listed are NORMAL responses to our highly stressful, UNETHICAL world. Also, I feel you are somewhat victim blaming because dealing with some of the TRULY PATHOLOGICAL people in our world, could cause anyone to feel some of these things. Also, dealing with physical illness such as cancer. Dealing with a child with severe autism (and the “system” there to “help”). Dealing with a loved one who is an addict. Dealing with job loss. Being in a major MVA. And the list goes on and on and on. Labelling people as “mentally ill” without considering multi factorial influences is wrong and HARMFUL. And you deal with ETHICS?? 😂😂 The only thing this video is good for is (your professions) business.

Narcissists love using mental illness against their victims.. they’ll thank you for giving them the ammo to use. A lot of they’re symptoms are caused by others. But you’re into victim blaming and shaming it seems. Cluster B is normal??? This video is kind of victimizing those in car accidents Lyme disease etc etc. but you wouldn’t be able to see that, could you...
