Do You Have This Common Boxing Fault? Fix it With a Simple Boxing Drill...Broom Handle Required!

One of the most common boxing technique faults, if not the most common, that I see in boxers is under-rotation when punching.
It is genuinely a major issue, and if you are affected by this you really should put in place measures to fix it.
This video will allow you to do exactly that by using a broom handle to form the basis of a simply boxing drill.
Under-rotating when punching loses you two things; reach and power.
Every punch that we throw in boxing requires rotation driven from the feet.
Whether it's the jab or the right cross, under-rotation will massively reduce the effectiveness of your offensive boxing techniques.
Effective punching at long range requires maximum rotation to maximise the length and power of your shots.
Effective punching at any other range requires maximum rotation to maximise power.
This is a no-brainer.
So, you can do this simple drill to ensure that you build the muscle memory to get your rotation right. All you need is a broom handle :-)
This is about marginal gains, making lots of small improvements across your full range of boxing techniques.
Cheers
Fran

Thank you, perfect timing. Just last night my coach was just telling me that I need to rotate the hips more. I tend to not turn over as much as I need to especially if I'm trying to be fast with my punches. This is something I been told by my coach often, and the thing is I feel like I am rotating the hips properly but obviously not if I'm told to rotate more quite often. I'm going to work that drill you were talking about and fix this. Thank you and God bless
@adcyuumi
@adcyuumi 4 жыл бұрын
If your punch doesn't hurt em, it's faster to just do nothing at all rather than bother throwing the punch. You accomplish just as much and you save a considerable amount of time between start to finish. It also saves you a lot of energy. There are always exceptions of course -- feints, nuisance jabs to block vision, points scored toward winning the round, and luring the opponent into thinking your punch doesn't hurt (before throwing it "for real" later) all come to mind. But if you NEVER throw for maximum power, you are handicapping yourself severely. Speed is not power. Penetration through the target is power, and speed magnifies that power. You get penetration through the target almost entirely through hip rotation, not with hand speed.

Definitely great advice and very important for beginners! But I would argue that when you're more advanced and learn to throw different kind of jabs, not all of them need full rotation. But a stiff, long jab meant to impress your opponent is definitely better off being thrown while rotating the hip and upper body. A defensive (while moving out for example) or distance measuring jab can be thrown without or minimal rotation as well in my opinion.

My homemade dummy is on a rail system with a pulley and counterweight system. I remember setting it up to experiment with trying different techniques with the same type of punches. A huge amount of people pump their punches (bring it back first then forward). Some use a small pump and others bigger. I've always thought it was silly because of the telegraph it gave. Nonetheless, I did pumped punches, just forward punches, and then forward only with hip rotation. Essentially there was not much difference at all between pumped punches and just straight forward, but the hip rotation clearly knocked the dummy down the rail farther. And yes, I kept my power of the arm punch the same as much as possible to see what the other differences made. So what you pointed out is certainly true, more length and certainly more power just rotating the hips.

Could you do a video on back foot flat vs back foot on your toes? Ive trained at 2 gyms with both of them encouraging each variant. I personally prefer a flat foot, its easier to post through your back leg and you don't risk losing balance when falling backwards after taking a shot. On the other hand, I see many benefits to having the back foot up; needless to say with Bruce Lee style boxing and JKD. Thoughts?

Good day coach, you are sitting very hard on your hind leg, in the previous videos you yourself said that - the heel of the right foot and the toe of the left foot should not overlap, and in the video you yourself create a barrier for the hip joint to turn, thereby do not roll the lower leg right foot.

@georgekondylis6723
@georgekondylis6723 Жыл бұрын
Actually rotating the jab makes no sense in a lot of ways. The hip is already in the finish of a rotation. Any more is over rotating. This will be more telegraphic and will tie up your r hand. The jab cross will not be good. Too much gap time between the jab and cross . And no power is gained from rotating the jab. If learned properly, the jab has plenty of snap w good stepping and alignment.
