For the beginner boxing can be an intimidating process, and as a boxing coach I see this a lot.
My main job went it comes to beginner boxing is to ensure that the boxer, be it a young person or an adult, is able to become self-sufficient in their learning process as quickly as possible. To enable the process of beginner boxing to be as effective as possible, I want to achieve the following:
I want to give them 5 beginner boxing skills to work on in their own time - the boxing stance, the jab, moving forward, moving backwards and the duck.
I want to get the beginner boxer to quickly understand the concept of ‘hit and not be hit’ - the true art of boxing
I want the beginner boxer to quickly experience the concept of someone throwing punches at them.
I want the beginner boxer to quickly experience the fundamental principle of counter punching and defending themselves…if someone tries to hit you…hit them back!
Below are a bunch of links to the beginner boxing skills that I cover in the video:
7 Steps to a Solid Boxing Stance - 90 Second Beginner Boxing Tips - • 7 Steps to a Solid Box...
How to Box - Boxing Footwork - Moving In and Out - • How to Box - Boxing Fo...
How to Box - The Jab - • How to Box - The Boxin...
Boxing Techniques - Ducking - • Boxing Techniques - Du...
I hope that this whistle stop tour of the beginner boxing journey has helped.
Let me know in the comments section :-)
Cheers
Fran

Coach I took up boxing 6 years ago. I'm 54. What did I learn? My biased thoughts on boxing went out the window! They are by far some of the fittest athletes on the planet. Boxing is an art form and yes, everything does comes from the floor.....learn that and your power comes naturally. Great video

Hiya Fran, these videos are great. I attended a boxing club for years as a young lad and teenager in Garston. I had some instruction in the basics but it was never as thorough as what you're offering here and in your other videos. I wish I'd come across you or someone like you when I was starting out. Feel like I could have got so much more out of the many years of training and sparring I did. At 55 I've now got a set of 14oz boxing gloves again; and I'm using your videos to help me learn all the things I wish I'd been taught about the sweet science from when I first walked into a gym 45 years ago. My mobility isn't what it used to be due to injuries whilst on duty during tactical training in the army but I'm ready to do what I can and enjoy the sport once again. Many thanks Fran. Love the patience, knowledge, inspiration and enthusiasm you share here. Well done, mate.

Brilliant video Fran! Cant wait to watch this with my son one day and was great for me now! My wife is German and Ive always had trouble picking the language up but since Ive been watching her teach our 15 month old how to speak it my proficiency has been growing at a rapid pace. Something to be said for adults teaching other adults with the lightness that we teach kids.

Great video Fran, you know EVERYTIME I make a brew - i am doing the stance, forward, back, left and right drills with a few rolls - right until my missus walks in and says "Ughh you are always boxing" - to be fair to her, the dressing gown hung on the back of the bedroom door get hit with many combinations as well. :) Joking aside, took what you said from the course, everything comes from the basics so practice even when not in the gym. For anyone sitting on the fence about Fran's courses - get them - you won't regret it - an absolute wealth of knowledge!

Greetings I am a novice I just started my training. What I do at home EVERY night on my own is stance for 15 mins, foot work 15 mins, punch technique 15 mins, blocking defense/head movement for 15 mins for a total of one hour before bed my goal is to be very good and that regiment will be done no matter how good I get. Please your honest critique. Thanks.

Thanks Fran. Great video. When I'm training large groups of kids, (15 to 20 in a group) in order for them to hear what I'm saying, I have to raise my voice quite loudly. I don't shout but it's borderline. These kids are in the age bracket of 7 to 10 years old, boys and girls. Some of them have very short attention spans and tend to trail off mentally when I'm talking to the group. I'd love to know how you deal with large groups. Do you raise your voice. How do you keep their attention? Thanks Fran. Love your video's. Keep up the good work. Liam (in Ireland)

Hello Liam. Great questions mat. It's a mix - enthusiastic voice, sometimes loud/sometimes quiet, lots of eye contact with individuals, enthusiastic movements, sometimes separating the talkative ones like the teacher did and building in some humour...even though lots of them think you are a bit of a tit...that's just the way it is. Key though is recognising that 15 mins is about it before you have to switch, especially with the 7-10 year olds. Keep doing what you are doing mate, it makes a huge difference to the little people👍

Shakz I would think low weight high reps and not heavy weight low reps( for building muscle) as too much muscle can be a disadvantage as it can make you slower and gas out quicker due to the increased mass even though it’s muscle and not fat on your body. I would do foundation exercises such as squat, bench press, deadlift as these are the foundations of building your core body strength. Also mix it up and don’t train the same body part on 2 consecutive days as your muscle actually starts growing when you are in recovery mode and resting and you run the risk of injury if you say train legs on Monday and Tuesday. It’s usually best to train 2 opposite muscle groups on the same day I.e chest and back, calf’s and quads triceps and biceps.

Maybe you should ask your coach? They will know you best because can see your progress. In my humble opinion, three weeks training isn't enough if you are a beginner. I would wait a few months until you improve your overall skill set and fitness levels.

Find a gym with good people and vibe, where they respect that you're a bit older and a beginner and the stuff you'll learn from those grown up kids will be gold. Think of it this way as well... hopefully you've not taken too many knocks to the head in life, so your chin will be good.. could give you the edge :P Late starter here, just do it if you got the urge.

I know what you mean. But I was exactly 36 years old when I stepped into my first boxing gym. I knew I was not going to become a world champ starting at my age, but I had a been a fan of the sport my entire life, so I just wanted to learn. A good gym will recognize the desire to learn and be happy to help you toward your goals. I am fifty years old now and while I certainly am not looking to do heavy sparring with young prospects I can still train and develop myself. Go for it is what I say. You will likely regret not trying to learn and you will likely feel much better for taking the jump and actually learning how to box. Best to you in your goals!
