I’m a professional skater but I’m also chronically ill, and I use asl so I’m really freaking out about hurting my arm or legs in a fall, I’ve been skating for two years and I’ve fallen twice and I hope it never happens again cuz my friends recently got hurt at my usual rink and I’m scared ima forget my fall techniques and get hurt, ima buy padding but this video made me feel better

Make sure to invest in good wrist guards too. They don’t replace good technique but can help. Wrist guards need splints on the palm and on top of triple 8 rd, 187 and killer pads are all good.

I’ve just recently bought skates and they’re coming in the mail soon. This has been one of my biggest fears and this has definitely helped! Thank you!
@zig1312 жыл бұрын
Invest in good, chunky, knee pads and it'll be like falling onto clouds. You'll learn much faster if you're confident and not afraid to get hurt. They can also last a really long time. I am still using my Smith Scabs from 6 years ago and I use them for Roller Derby - the velcro is still good. With cheaper pads the velcro can fail quickly. That said SFR Wrist Guards are a great option as they are so much cheaper than other options and they are double-splinted meaning they protect your wrists from going too far in either direction.
@stunnatheroadrunna2 жыл бұрын
@@zig131 thank you so much! I’ve heard volleyball knee pads are also a good alternative because you can bend and move your knee but they also provide protection. Do you think those will work well?

I play roller derby, and knee taps are a fantastic way to fall and to help you get comfortable with falling (so much so that they were literally the first thing my coaches taught!). That being said, they are supposed to be more knee slides than knee taps. Most of the energy is supposed to come from your movement forward, so when you do them make sure that your knee pad doesn't slam into the ground and instead just slides along the floor. Also, if you take a bigger fall you can put the other knee down for added stability/energy dispersion!
@Skatie Жыл бұрын
Great info! Sliding definitely helps to take out the energy! ⭐️🛼😎😎

I’m a senior and just starting to roller skate . This info is perfect . My question is , if I practice falling - will muscle memory eventually kick in ? Ouch. My main recommendation is to get low. Almost to a squat position. Then if you do fall there’s less distance between you and the ground. If you wobble aim for the canon ball position. That helps tuck everything in and hopefully protect that knee.

The slidability of ice surfaces when one falls is what I'm most envious of ice skating. But I loved the way you rolled over your shoulder! I hated doing it when I had aikido classes, I was afraid and never really got the hang of it

That’s a really good point about the ice but I always found the ice so much harder to fall on than the wooden rink floors. Another option is to slide on the pads too.

Have you ever tried skate park skating, ramps and stuff like that? If not , yes give it a go . I started doing because derby was not happening during covid but if you do get the chance, go with a skateboarder. My exs and i once played a game called count the bail. As he did not really quite get the grasp that every time he missed a trick or somthing and he had not landed on his board, that counted as a fall and a fall is a bail. Anytime i was coming down and would use alot of my derby training to not hit the concrete hard, well that was a bail was my fall. He concidered himself a good skater untill he realised i may bail/fall maybe once or twice in a few hrs session and he would be well in the over double digits that first time. He got a new respect for us on quads as i had to point out to him , we cant just jump off our wheels. Their attached to our feet so thats why i kit up, mainly out of habbit from derby but draging a knee and learning how to fall safly is better than landing on your face... lol And with vert, you drop to both your knees and slide down on them. Makes a fall kind of fun.

Toe stop coping stall, sidewards allyopp, in to a grind then down fakie , toe manual to stop Done ... Then aske them to do grind the rail unity... its more imposabale to them than a skate board " imposable". Backside Switch shove it is just us turning to skate backwards and changing from our domanat foot to our other foot while turning on flat ground ... lol And we nose manual fakie for how ever long we went to just end up in a stop all the time but if they do it for more than 5 mts , they put it on youtube shorts like they just walked on water . They think they are doing something special.. Meanwhile ive been working on my hand stand stalls. I have fallen backwards 2 times (in the last month), the 1st time I instinctively put my hand down and sprained my wrist. The second time I fell in the exact same way. it was so fast (like a split second) I didn’t even have a chance to process the fall. I have a video of the fall and I could see how fast I went down. And how all my body hit the floor before my feet did, putting all my weight in my wrist. Now I feel like I am done with this. I can not afford a sprain wrist every-time I fall. May be I am too old or too big for this sport. This is so frustrating 😢😢😢
