I felt relieved for him when he died. His injury was so horrific that even the most positive mind set couldn't have survived weeks of bed rest, numerous bladder infections, never being alone, having no feeling in his body or ability to move anything. It makes me feel claustrophobic and terrified just thinking about it. An active young man forced to watch people do all the things he can never do again, even breathing on his own. He was immensely brave and dealt with cards he had amazingly well but I'm glad he had a swift way out of what amounts to a living hell. If there's a heaven he will surely be up there doing all the things we couldn't do on earth.

All the people saying that the girlfriend was awful for leaving really need to get a grip on reality. They weren’t married and they were both young party kids. He would likely have done the same. I’m sure it didn’t feel good for either one at the time but she was right to leave. She realized early that she couldn’t handle the stress and responsibility of a severely disabled partner and was honest.

I'm sure they both had their reasons. It's not up to us to judge because we don't know the whole situation. We only know the info we are given in the video. There's a lot we don't know. I'm also thinking that Stuart was smart enough to understand the severity of his injuries & the high risk of death from infections. Something I'm almost sure was on his mind when he made the decision to let her go. It's always horrible when a spouse leaves. You've already established that person as your life partner. Someone who vowed to be there for you & support you no matter what. Someone you trusted. To just leave you when you're suffering the most. That's an entirely different situation. To mutually agree to go their separate ways is a much better situation. It still sucks but at least she didn't just up & leave him on bad terms. They came to a mutual agreement. It's disrespectful to Stuart to judge her for something he made very clear in the video was his decision. I don't think he would want that. That's probably why he made the point to say it was his decision. So ppl wouldn't do that.

I have a spinal cord injury and have been wheelchair bound since I was 27. Initially I thought life was over and even considered suicide for a short time but luckily my life is now better at the age of 43 than at any other time. I’ve since been diagnosed with arthritis (caused by years of pushing a manual chair) but I don’t let that stop me either. You learn to appreciate things differently when you mature and I now see what happened to me as a blessing. I’ve met some of the most incredible people as a result and had some amazing opportunities. I feel like an 18 year old in my mind and know life will be more challenging in the future but that’s the same for all of us. I have a big electric wheelchair that looks intimidating but for me it’s just a means of getting about. I also drive an adapted van and am fully independent both in travel and at home. Luckily I’ve been blessed with supportive friends and family and I have a sense of humour that I use to my advantage. Life is full of ups and downs it’s what you do with these situations that makes you who you are. Spinal cord injury can happen to anyone, anytime and anywhere.

I’ve had a tough time watching this documentary. There are no rules for this sort of thing as regards how it changes many lives. A lot of people mean well at the beginning, but you can see over time, everyone involved changes, some for good some for bad. Stuart’s is one of the worst. The 24 hour care, with his life on the brink at all times. It’s mind blowing the affect on those most close to him. The parents, the family and friends. Humans are not super human. Their minds and bodies wear out in time, especially when pushed to these extremes of care giving. So, no one can judge at any level. No one should have a negative comment about anyone. This is not normal, it’s tragic. Not just Stuart but anyone whose lives are altered to such a degree. My son had a motorcycle accident almost 10 years ago. It has been life altering for us and not a day goes by that it is always in front of you. He is 32 now. His most severe injuries were internal. He can’t have children among other things, but he looks like nothing happened on the outside. But, he now feels socially awkward so here we are, a 32 year old young man, never had a real girl friend still at home. He’s a 1000 times better off than Stuart, but to him, his mind frame is not as good as Stuart’s. Bottom line, being disabled and denied the normal life you are usually born with is a real crapper. So treasure every day of your lives and be careful.

Why did she hide the news? To parahrase her.."OMG im 21 and im lumbered with this...im skedaddling". Not being critical of her as its understandable

one has to wonder if his "girlfriend' actually liked him before the incident. if i loved someone i would never leave their side, no matter the consequence. How selfish.

aretwo deetwo You MUST be joking!!! She was only his GIRLFRIEND, not his WIFE...how many MILLIONS of girlfriends and boyfriends break up????????? Why do you call her selfish??????? The POINT of only being a girlfriend and NOT MARRIED or ENGAGED is that you are GETTING TO KNOW THE OTHER PERSON and there is no guarantee that she loves him at that stage. You are a nasty person to say she was selfish. Do you tell all girlfriends and boyfriends that break up that they are selfish???? Did you marry your first girlfriend/boyfriend? If not, then YOU are selfish (according to you).
