@Cynical Cat geez sorry didnt mean to hurt your feelings... If you commit yourself to only eating a certian amount of calories each day you simplly wont be allowed or wont want to have oreos because that would put you over the limit. If you cant help to eat that bag of oreos you should feel guilty for 2 seconds and then just move on and try not to eat for the rest of the day.
@peenhead9938
@peenhead9938 2 жыл бұрын
@Cynical Cat At the end of the day you need to have discipline. 97% of diets fail because people give up. If you dont stick to your diet its not going to work. You said you lost 60 lbs from cutting calories so it obviously works you just didnt stick with it.

The Bible has many secrets regarding health and diet. Jesus ate mainly fish and Bread (probably barley bread). Isaiah 7:15 says “Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good” Also Ezekiel bread some say is one of the healthiest breads on the planet. Science is catching up to the benefits of prayer, fasting, walks in nature (If you can do these things). Some people do everything right and still die young that’s why God says (Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”). This is so true. I started my weight loss journey (again) 3 months ago, I lost 30 pounds now. I gained more everything back after graduation but I decided this needs to stop, I want to be healthy to live longer. It's all about small changes, baby steps. I used to drink soda, eat fast food 4x a week, drink beers on Friday night. I haven't been drinking anything except water now, I still have the occasional regular fries once a month and I make sure I share it with a friend or a relative so I don't have to eat it all, I make sure I work out at least 30mins-1hr everyday, I don't want to deprive myself from the pleasures of life - occasionally I eat one small cookie. If i'm craving for something, I make sure I have my fruits or roasted almonds with me instead. Ate more fish, less beef and pork, more veggies. Every time I take a bite of sugary refined crap, I just don't feel good at all. It really changes my palate(?) not sure if that's the correct term, but I no longer look for bread/pizza/burger, I just want to eat my veggies. After so many trials and errors, I finally found one that works for me.

If you're trying to loose weight try reading Dr.Atkins book titled Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. He explains ketosis and low carb dieting very thoroughly in this book, it's so easy to understand. Its the book my dad followed to loose 275 lb in a year and 2 months. He kept with low carb eating, he ate all the meat and fat he wanted and got healthy. He started with zero carbs and no caffeine for a week to get the body into the state of ketosis. He used Keto Sticks they are urine test strips. After the first week he gradually added more carbs but not exceeding 40 grams of carbs per day through out his weight loss journey. If the body is in the state of ketosis it can not store fat it can only shed fat and other toxic weight so he ate all the fat and calories he wanted to keep himself satisfied while ketosing. There is no need to count calories as long as you are keeping your carb intake low enough to keep you ketosing. Forty grams of carbs per day is a recommended limit to keep the body in the state of ketosis. If you have a cheat day or cheat meal your body may stop ketosing because of overconsumption of carbs so all you have to do after a cheat day is start over by eating zero carbs and no caffeine for a week to get yourself back into a nice deep ketosis. Caffeine spikes insulin thus slowing weighloss so some people restrict it completely even after the first week to avoid slowed weightloss. Eating fat , especially rich animal fats , while ketosing causes the body to ketose more heavily, provides energy, satisfies appetite healthily, lubricates intestines , eyes and skin and is crucial for organ function including the brain. Animal meats should not be restricted either they are too important for replenishing the muscles and organs. Also, no colon cleansers are needed on a diet that causes the body to ketose, in fact it can be detrimental. I made that mistake and almost killed my kidneys it hurt so bad so I quit colon cleansers while keto dieting and I felt so much better. Ketosis causes the body to naturally cleanse itself including the colon. The body works hard enough while ketosing to shed weight on its own. There are veggies allowed in the first week about 1 cup per day they are practically zero carb. They are listed in Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution book. He also wrote a book giving carb count content of many foods to help you stay on track. I've read both of these books. Keto Sticks are urine test strips. Test every day. If your test shows pink color it means you're ketosing. The darker the pink color means the heavier you're ketosing meaning the faster you are loosing weight. If your test shows no pink color it means you are not ketosing not loosing weight but gaining weight so you have to keep eating zero carbs and no caffeine until pink color shows on your test. Eating practically zero carbs for a week should get your body into deep ketosis. Sorry to repeat myself but I hope this info helps people loose weight fast like my dad did. I pray you understand it completely in Jesus' name. God's blessings to ya! 😉

Have you ever lied, lusted sexually, disrespected parents, stolen, thought bad thoughts, hated someone, sinned sexually (fornication, Adultery …) etc All humans have sinned in thought, word or deed. Therefore, none of us are good and able to get into Heaven and will be justly judged and sent to eternity in Hell! But God out of His love sent his son Jesus (also God in Human flesh) to die on the cross for our sins and rise again from the dead (nobody can do that only God). Jesus said if you Repent of your sins and put your complete trust in Him for your salvation, you’ll have eternal life, given to you as a gift (this message is not to be ignored; seek God today). @BenjaminGessel 4 жыл бұрын
@@shamaron2015 Absolutely. Without a doubt. Salmon is one of the top 50 healthiest foods on the planet, in my opinion. Its basically the healthiest fish, and debatably the healthiest animal food overall. Of course, it still has to compete with all the veggies, nuts, seeds, beans, lower carb fruits (berries), etc. that are generally going to rank a tad higher, most likely. Thing about salmon is that it has vitamin D, A, omega 3's, B12, iodine, all kinds of stuff like that. It doesn't age you as much as heavier meats and dairy. Pasture raised eggs are very healthy, like salmon, and the yolks are esp. nutrient dense (iodine, A, etc.), but yeah, I think salmon is a bit more life sustaining overall than eggs, just a bit...

I can only talk from experience, Im 69 now and have only ever been on a diet a couple of times in my whole life, but I know what worked for me, it was simple and I didnt miss the foods that were affected, I gave up eating SUGAR and WHEAT and YEAST, these are the main three things that need to be reined in, obviously SUGAR is easy, Wheat is also easy, YEAST is tricky, but I didnt get hung up about it, I simply threw away my Cereals that were made from wheat and used Oats based cereals, I cut my bread intake down to one slice of toast at breakfast, for breakfast I had a 2 egg omelet with 2 rashes of Streaky Bacon, 2 fried tomatoes and a piece of toast, plus my bowl of cereal and coffee, used Honey for sugar in my cereal, lunch was a healthy salad with either beef or chicken, ate 2 pieces of fruit during the day, then for dinner I ate a meal that consisted of meat and vegetables, I always used Olive Oil for cooking and for salad dressings, I lost a average of 1 Kilo ( 2.2lbs) per week, I went from 92 kgs ( 203 lbs) to 80 kgs ( 176 lbs) in 12 weeks, I was 64 years old when I did this and I only used a Rowing Machine for exercise, unless you have a genuine medical reason for carrying extra weight, then you really dont have an excuse for being over weight and unhealthy.

developing binge-eating disorder… I still struggle with that up to this day. It came to a point where most of the days were spent calculating calories, not meeting the calorie intake, feeling guilty, then soothing those feelings by binging. It went on and became a habit. Time passed by and my goals shifted, from wanting to have lean muscles and rock hard abs, to having a body I love and feel confident in - regardless of the size/appearance - whilst engaging in physical activities and having a healthy diet. A diet where just like what is said in the video, 80% healthy foods I love and cook by myself/family/others, 20% delicious treat. I also want to chime in and say that this quote from 13:28 is what truly matters the most. Thank you, I will use this motto for my life.

6:36 Thank you for mentioning the environmental benefits of plant-based diet. I think it's always important to consider the impact that our food choices have on not only the environment, but also other people (i.e. poor working conditions for farmers, slave labor, etc.). Keep up the great work with these videos!

Have you ever lied, lusted, disrespected parents, stolen, thought bad thoughts, hated someone, sinned sexually (fornication, Adultery …) etc All humans have sinned in thought, word or deed. Your thoughts? John 14: 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

What I do: -I drink one non-water drink a day, usually an iced tea, chocolate milk, or an iced coffee. Everything else is water. -I eat clean food, stuff that just _feels_ clean. Wether that be fish, white meat, greens, water, etc. Not stuff that feels processed or dirty, like fried foods. -I give myself one cheat day a week to give myself a break from the grind. I let myself eat what I want, like soda, fried foods, etc. I actually just started this week, so I’ll come back in a few weeks to update.

Most excellent! This is what I teach my patients. Lovely to have this video that I can share on my work FB page to re-enforce what I tell them. It is also apropos for me. I have maintained an 80 lb weight loss (though still some to go to be where I'd like to be) for the better part of the last 15 years (other than a small blip up during a high stress period). I gave up dieting a few years ago and decided to simply eat healthy, stop eating all "diet" foods (no artificial sweeteners, etc) and more recently have stopped gluten and dairy to see if it would lead to improvement in some other health issues (which it has) with the hopes that after a period of 3-4 months I might be able to add some things back in...I am thinking ancient grains, some cheese, etc. I also do yoga and meditate. It is incredible how easy it is to maintain, and potentially attain weight loss, through the things you suggest...which is both what I do personally and what I teach others. Thank-you for making this video. An excellent resource indeed.

This is a great video. I became whole-food plant-based after diagnosed (male, age 55) with diabetes (12.5 A1C), hypertension (160/110), high cholesterol (234, 129 LDL), I also had ED, chest pains, and was 30 pounds overweight while having low muscle mass, so more like 40-50 pounds FAT overweight. I am sure I was close to having a cardiac event. OK, so I went full WFPB vegan. Plus strenuous exercise (2 hours) once or twice a week. Almost a year. Pretty much all better now. That being all said, the vegan community in some ways lacks perspective (the health side, that is, not the ethical or environmental side). If you have one of these health problems, then yes, you SHOULD go whole-food plant-based, UNTIL YOU GET BETTER. That's where the common-sense evidence-backed approach of this video shines. It works for people who are not yet sick. You CAN eat about 3 ounces of animal products a day (and don't forget BEANS -- Google "Blue Zones"). However, beware your triggers and portion creep. For me, I know that 3 ounces a day (or one meal a week) will turn into a whole lot more than that, just in cheese alone. Then your gut bacteria completely change back to rotting flesh carnivores and the door flies back off the hinges. Many cancers (via IGF-1 and TMAO), and heart disease (via LDL and oxidized cholesterol, where even HDL is turned evil) are due in large part to your microbiome. A good place to start with evidence is nutritionfacts.org. Here's a life hack that has worked wonders for me: Eat less than 600 calories per pound. It will be almost impossible to gain weight. There are 454 grams in a pound. Look at your food label. If the serving size in grams matches the calories, you are perfect. 450 calories per pound, just under 30 per ounce (28 grams, a common serving size for snacks), and one per gram. If you are looking at hummus and one has 50 calories per 30g serving and one has 90, which one should you choose? If you go over, then compensate. Eat four cups of spinach or half a head of broccoli. Don't ADD oil, even olive oil, to anything. If there's a little in there already, OK fine. The Mediterranean diets studied do not reflect modern usage. Eat whole olives instead. Google "caloric density." In the spirit of this video, whenever someone comes to you with an idea ("Deuterium activates your mitochondria and prevents cancer so a carnivore diet is good for you"), don't look at the reasons why that may be true. Look for the reasons why it may be FALSE (or non-constructive, meaning random noise, as with the example). That's how science ACTUALLY WORKS. You try to find exceptions until you give up and accept it as fact. Consider Einstein's General Relativity. One counterexample would call the whole thing into question. Look at all of the criticism and judge how much you believe THAT. You might often find, on both both sides of the fence, that the criticizers are using evidence that doesn't quite exactly say what the criticizers are saying. In addition, small studies over short periods of any cohort size with "soft" endpoints (weight reduced, A1C improved, LDL reduced) as opposed to long studies (>5 years) with large cohorts (>5,000 people) and "hard" endpoints (heart attack, stroke, death) can be constructed to say whatever they want and a multitude of biases creep in all over the place. (Watch out -- the same can happen with meta-analyses of large studies due to selection bias, improper comparison, and other mistakes and biases. This is VERY popular right now! Look at the ORIGINAL studies.) Over and over you will see that replacing a less crappy diet with a more crappy diet (or vice-versa) (e.g,. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ijc.21042 plus anything released by the Egg Board or Dairy industry) doesn't hurt or maybe helps a little in soft outcomes. Overwhelmingly these soft improvements are associated with weight loss. Eating nothing but Twinkies improved soft markers for more people than low fat. (Sorry I don't have the reference. Google "Twinkie Diet.") Finally, consider the Blue Zones. There are large populations of people who regularly live past 100 with no dementia, heart disease, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers, diabetes, arthritis, diverticulitis -- and the list goes on. They don't have cell phone apps and diet books and vitamin supplements and dietitians. What do they eat? They eat what their grandparents ate. 30-40% of calories from beans, less than 5% of calories from animal products (meat, eggs, and dairy at most 4-5 times a month), and the rest from whole cooked starches (plus nuts, seeds, and berries). When you look at modern videos of these people, the younger ones are fat. Guess why that is!

We love this video because it clarifies that the best diet is one that’s best for you since there is no exact formula for a proper diet that fits all of us since our needs may differ. Staying healthy is important, but it doesn’t mean that you’ve got to suffer eating boring food. It can be pretty challenging to figure that out on your own specifically if you’re not that familiar with cooking. Thanks to Reviving Mind’s health and wellness coaches for helping us out with this and many more to help us stay healthy and live longer.

8 tips for healthy eating These 8 practical tips cover the basics of healthy eating and can help you make healthier choices. The key to a healthy diet is to eat the right amount of calories for how active you are so you balance the energy you consume with the energy you use. If you eat or drink more than your body needs, you'll put on weight because the energy you do not use is stored as fat. If you eat and drink too little, you'll lose weight. You should also eat a wide range of foods to make sure you're getting a balanced diet and your body is receiving all the nutrients it needs. It's recommended that men have around 2,500 calories a day (10,500 kilojoules). Women should have around 2,000 calories a day (8,400 kilojoules). Most adults in the UK are eating more calories than they need and should eat fewer calories. 1. Base your meals on higher fibre starchy carbohydrates Starchy carbohydrates should make up just over a third of the food you eat. They include potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and cereals. Choose higher fibre or wholegrain varieties, such as wholewheat pasta, brown rice or potatoes with their skins on. They contain more fibre than white or refined starchy carbohydrates and can help you feel full for longer. Try to include at least 1 starchy food with each main meal. Some people think starchy foods are fattening, but gram for gram the carbohydrate they contain provides fewer than half the calories of fat. Keep an eye on the fats you add when you're cooking or serving these types of foods because that's what increases the calorie content - for example, oil on chips, butter on bread and creamy sauces on pasta. 2. Eat lots of fruit and veg It's recommended that you eat at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and veg every day. They can be fresh, frozen, canned, dried or juiced. Getting your 5 A Day is easier than it sounds. Why not chop a banana over your breakfast cereal, or swap your usual mid-morning snack for a piece of fresh fruit? A portion of fresh, canned or frozen fruit and vegetables is 80g. A portion of dried fruit (which should be kept to mealtimes) is 30g. A 150ml glass of fruit juice, vegetable juice or smoothie also counts as 1 portion, but limit the amount you have to no more than 1 glass a day as these drinks are sugary and can damage your teeth. 3. Eat more fish, including a portion of oily fish Fish is a good source of protein and contains many vitamins and minerals. Aim to eat at least 2 portions of fish a week, including at least 1 portion of oily fish. Oily fish are high in omega-3 fats, which may help prevent heart disease. Oily fish include: salmon trout herring sardines pilchards mackerel Non-oily fish include: haddock plaice coley cod tuna skate hake You can choose from fresh, frozen and canned, but remember that canned and smoked fish can be high in salt. Most people should be eating more fish, but there are recommended limits for some types of fish. 4. Cut down on saturated fat and sugar -Saturated fat You need some fat in your diet, but it's important to pay attention to the amount and type of fat you're eating. There are 2 main types of fat: saturated and unsaturated. Too much saturated fat can increase the amount of cholesterol in the blood, which increases your risk of developing heart disease. On average, men should have no more than 30g of saturated fat a day. On average, women should have no more than 20g of saturated fat a day. Children under the age of 11 should have less saturated fat than adults, but a low-fat diet is not suitable for children under 5. Saturated fat is found in many foods, such as: fatty cuts of meat sausages butter hard cheese cream cakes biscuits lard pies Try to cut down on your saturated fat intake and choose foods that contain unsaturated fats instead, such as vegetable oils and spreads, oily fish and avocados. For a healthier choice, use a small amount of vegetable or olive oil, or reduced-fat spread instead of butter, lard or ghee. When you're having meat, choose lean cuts and cut off any visible fat. All types of fat are high in energy, so they should only be eaten in small amounts. -Sugar Regularly consuming foods and drinks high in sugar increases your risk of obesity and tooth decay. Sugary foods and drinks are often high in energy (measured in kilojoules or calories), and if consumed too often can contribute to weight gain. They can also cause tooth decay, especially if eaten between meals. Free sugars are any sugars added to foods or drinks, or found naturally in honey, syrups and unsweetened fruit juices and smoothies. This is the type of sugar you should be cutting down on, rather than the sugar found in fruit and milk. Many packaged foods and drinks contain surprisingly high amounts of free sugars. Free sugars are found in many foods, such as: sugary fizzy drinks sugary breakfast cereals cakes biscuits pastries and puddings sweets and chocolate alcoholic drinks Food labels can help. Use them to check how much sugar foods contain. More than 22.5g of total sugars per 100g means the food is high in sugar, while 5g of total sugars or less per 100g means the food is low in sugar. 5. Eat less salt: no more than 6g a day for adults Eating too much salt can raise your blood pressure. People with high blood pressure are more likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke. Even if you do not add salt to your food, you may still be eating too much. About three-quarters of the salt you eat is already in the food when you buy it, such as breakfast cereals, soups, breads and sauces. Use food labels to help you cut down. More than 1.5g of salt per 100g means the food is high in salt. Adults and children aged 11 and over should eat no more than 6g of salt (about a teaspoonful) a day. Younger children should have even less. 6. Get active and be a healthy weight As well as eating healthily, regular exercise may help reduce your risk of getting serious health conditions. It's also important for your overall health and wellbeing. Being overweight or obese can lead to health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, heart disease and stroke. Being underweight could also affect your health. Most adults need to lose weight by eating fewer calories. If you're trying to lose weight, aim to eat less and be more active. Eating a healthy, balanced diet can help you maintain a healthy weight. 7. Do not get thirsty You need to drink plenty of fluids to stop you getting dehydrated. The government recommends drinking 6 to 8 glasses every day. This is in addition to the fluid you get from the food you eat. All non-alcoholic drinks count, but water, lower fat milk and lower sugar drinks, including tea and coffee, are healthier choices. Try to avoid sugary soft and fizzy drinks, as they're high in calories. They're also bad for your teeth. Even unsweetened fruit juice and smoothies are high in free sugar. Your combined total of drinks from fruit juice, vegetable juice and smoothies should not be more than 150ml a day, which is a small glass. Remember to drink more fluids during hot weather or while exercising. 8. Do not skip breakfast Some people skip breakfast because they think it'll help them lose weight. But a healthy breakfast high in fibre and low in fat, sugar and salt can form part of a balanced diet, and can help you get the nutrients you need for good health. A wholegrain lower sugar cereal with semi-skimmed milk and fruit sliced over the top is a tasty and healthier breakfast.

Agree with most of what Dr Mike says. However, I have found that it's easier to reduce calories by eating a low carb, high fat life style, including saturated fats. I test my blood glucose periodically which bears out the above. Main thing though, is exercise, avoid junk foods and sugar.

If youre trying to loose weight try reading Dr.Atkins book titled Dr. 😉

Funny how there's loads of vegans commenting about how their diets helps the environment even tho a lot of them eat food that has to be shipped from South America which has an impact on global warming because of the carbon dioxide being produced via the journey their food takes to get to them...

Meat is also shipped from south america, so unless you can prove that a vegan diet consists of so much more "shipped" food than a non-vegan diet your point is moot; the fruits and veggies grown in south america still use far less land and resources than the meat produced in south america. Furthermore, the shipping of food is actually the smallest component of carbon production in the foods life-cycle. Production and cooking actually contribute a far greater component to the overall carbon footprint of any given food. What I thinks is funny is how when people try to do something "good", others insist on framing them as hipocrites simply because what they are doing is not "perfect".

@@altawolf11 I think he's got a point for some regions of the country. For example, Maine. I tried so hard to eat a locally sourced, vegan diet, but we had frost the second week of June and snow the first week of October. You can ferment cabbage etc, but most of what you end up getting is shipped at least from California. However, you can get local meat, cheese, eggs, and milk year round. Frankly, I'm not sure which way is better for the environment. :-/

I really enjoyed and appreciated what Dr. Mike has to say about all aspects of food and "dieting". I think this video would be very beneficial for doctors and nurses to watch and be aware of to hear and know the many different ways to look at diet and approach conversations with patients who struggle with eating in general. I think it is important how Dr. Mike looks at food in a positive light and says "food is grand" in the ways it helps with culture and brings people together, and if put in the "right pattern" how food is good for you and is important for means of life instead of bashing foods and how it is making the world obese and so on. This video is also interesting on how Dr. Mike looks at the pros and cons of a few different mainstream diets as well as culture and behavior. I think it is interesting on how he shines light on how carbs, protein, sugar, and so on are all important to our diets, and how different cultures have higher intake of certain types of foods but are still "healthy" because of their culture and lifestyle. When patients have said they have "failed" because they have tried exercising and still have not lost weight and Dr. Mike says that you have failed nothing because the exercise is still good for your body as a whole really stood out to me because that is so true. "Diet" should not just be about becoming a "healthy" weight but bettering your body and health as a whole physically and emotionally.

Great video, and totally agree. Here in the US when women started to enter the workplace, understandably an emphasis was put on convenience which gave rise to more processed foods and fast foods. Then of course fat got vilified and was often replaced with sugar making processed food very caloric dense. Combine this with our ever increasing sedentary lifestyles and it’s no wonder many of us have gotten fat. So many crazy diets these days with little or poor studies to support them and even fewer long term studies. People ought not confuse themselves and simply try to incorporate more Whole Foods to their diet and limit processed foods as much as they can. I learned to cook well which really helps making “eating healthy” enjoyable…..because nobody wants to eat kale sandwiches everyday! I still enjoy pizza and burgers but I try to make “better bad choices”. If I feel like a burger I don’t get fries. If I get pizza I don’t eat half of it in one sitting. People fail because they set themselves up for failure. Dieting is a short term solution not a lifestyle change…which is needed for success. Being healthy doesn’t mean u need to run on a treadmill 2 hrs a day but I agree some form of exercise is hugely important. Not for the calories it’s burns but mainly for the reasons mentioned in the video. Also maintaining some muscle mass by exercising helps with metabolism and their is no better way to burn calories than passively. I’m 51 and have never been fat but my weight will jump around by 10 lbs if I’m making bad choices. I lift weights for a half hour about three days a week just to maintain muscle mass and walk 30 min or an hour everyday. Along with eating about 80% whole foods it’s worked for me all of these years. I think the biggest deterrent for people is thinking being healthy is some sort of huge miserable commitment, and it’d not! What’s miserable is having adverse health conditions as a result of the choices we make. Just wanted to share so people understand how “doable” being healthier can be.

Really enjoying your series, Dr. Mike! I have spread these around to my own patients and family and I hope they inspire them to make positive changes. I totally agree with everything you talked about and it is what I tell my patients too. One thing you did not mention in this video that I would suggest is that we eat small and frequent "meals" to avoid long periods of not food. I believe it leads to a drop in serum glucose and brain hypoglycaemia which then triggers "survival mode" where our brain switches metabolism over to energy storage rather than energy burn. Could talk a long time on this, but maybe off line is better.
