i honestly wasn't sure whether or not the fallopian tubes were attached to the ovaries or not, but it's interesting to know that they were in fact NOT ATTACHED to the ovaries.

Ovulation pain is worse than menstrual cramps for me. I don't feel it every month but it's definitely ovulation-related and it's like a quick sharp, stabbing sensation on one side or the other. Fortunately it doesn't usually last longer than a few minutes but it hurts like a MFer.

My aunt who was a nurse called my ovulation pain mittelschmertz when I was 14. She also suggested I lay with my pelvis slightly raised. She was right about both, as I discovered a few years later when my mom finally got me to an OB-GYN who actually listened and didn't just dismiss me as a whiny teenager. She was also my first ever female doctor and she did several tests. I discovered I had a whole slew of conditions - endometriosis, PCOS, a tipped uterus (for which she prescribed a slantboard - go Auntie!), and found I had a uterine fibroid the diameter of a dime, which in fibroid terms is exceptionally large. I had a fibroidectomy and my pain was reduced significantly. That doctor really changed my life.

Wow. I went to doctor when my typical ovulation pain became crippling and they also found a fibroid about 1cm. I am awaiting it’s removal. Good to hear that the pain had a clear cause although it seemed amazing that something that small could do that. Also so happy for my new female OBGYN who did further testing after my first ultrasound did not show anything significant. The saline infused ultrasound found what the regular one couldn’t.

What?! I currently have a 3 cm fibroid that’s been in there for at least 2 years and was told it’s just a small one, shouldn’t be the cause of my symptoms and not to worry about it. Now I’m pregnant with it in there with baby, and they are mildly concerned about it causing growth restriction for my baby, but still say it’s just a small one and most likely won’t be problematic.

@@hirthousesaintbernards3527Yeah, a dime sized fibroid is definitely considered small. 2inches and above is considered large. I had several at the same time with one nearly the size of a baseball...and they were still saying I could wait on having them removed. But since my periods were so heavy, that they were nearly unmanageable, I chose surgery. Thankfully, they never caused me much pain...just massively inconvenient to be bleeding thru my clothes at work and having periods that lasted 3 weeks or more and which caused me to be anemic. @@yoshinowa1 They usually don't totally stop your period. For some people they do, for most it becomes lighter. Mine was exactly the same but lighter for about the first two years that I had an IUD. Now I usually go several months with no bleeding and then will have a month with a light period. But the rest of your hormonal cycle and symptoms can be less affected. IUDs don't usually totally prevent ovulation. The primary way they prevent fertilization is by thickening the cervical mucus so that sperm can't get through. They also make implantation of an egg less likely since they thin the uterine lining that builds up during the menstrual cycle (hence the lessened bleeding).

Scishow channel did an awesome video about stem cell research. They summarized that menstrual blood/fluid typically contains lots of stem cells. These stem cells are able to be grown much faster than bone marrow stem cells (the prior gold standard) into all 5 tissue group types. So, growing new organs and manufacturing new treatment substances - without the issues of fetal stem cell sources - is so possible from this. ❤

So glad to know I'm not the only one! My issues were dismissed until I was 25, since I'm overweight and was always only ever told to "eat healthy and excersise more". Yes, good tips and I really try to do both of that, yet I don't lose weight and have major issues. Turned out I had PCOS, am insulin resistant and after 5 years of trying to treat that, we found out I also have hypothyroidism. Now that all of my issues are being treated, I am slowly losing weight. However, trying to have a child with my husband is a struggle due to me mensturating, but apparently not ovulating. While obesity is an issue and it is always advisable to eat well and excersise, doctors NEED to learn to see past the weight issues. Oftentimes they're a symptom of something bigger, not a result. Even more so if one is a woman.

I was getting frustrated because I was having cycles that would be anywhere from 30-95 days, significantly reducing my understanding of my body. I had no clear understanding of what my ovulation symptomology was. After being medicated and sleeping regularly, my cycles returned to a sense of normalcy, somewhere in the 30s range of days. I was able to keep track of my BBT with my smartwatch and it gave an accurate prediction for a fertile window! Just 3 months of medication, normal sleep, and cycles I was able to get pregnant. I’ve studied ovulation quite a bit and I believe it is pretty possible to have a ovarian follicle develop, swell, but not burst, then it either develops into an ovarian cyst or reabsorbs/settles down. Thus having a period without ovulation. I had an ovarian cyst, the size of an orange, and had my periods. Also for years I’ve had periods without cervical mucus changes, showing that I wasn’t ovulating but I still had periods. Also, when my both my daughter and I were in our 20’s our cervical mucus changes showed we ovulated about day 8 but had consistent cycles of 26-30 days every month. Be wary of doctors using averages and saying they are facts, it makes the outliers feel like they’re not experiencing what they’re experiencing, so confusing.

I dont menstruate in the normal sense but I get all the physical signs of ovulation, then a smattering of pink discharge for 1 day only. This is super rare and only happens once or twice a year. I've been told its impossible, but its also not typical for people to stay on depo for 18 years so they don't really know what your body does long term. Obviously I have no uterine lining so the hostile environment won't lead to pregnancy, but this is why depo is 99% effective with perfect use not 100%, SOME people do ovulate occassionally without any menstruation on the depo. The reproductive system is weird and wonderful!

The egg may not get released, but the related hormones may, so the uterine lining starts falling off anyway. That is what is called menstration bleeding. If it doesnt for more than three weeks after expected menstruation date without you being pregnant, the kining shedding has to be induced arzificially via hormonal injections, otherwise it could lead to creating cancerous tissues. i had the same condition or similar rather. when once or twice a year i felt all the signs of pms but the bleeding in time when it was supposed to come, but it did not come, instead, i got the signs of ovulation for the second time in the period cycle. And then had mentruation two weeks later. So it seems that in the first ovulation attemp, the egg did not release, and while the hormones started to prepare my body for bleeding at the same time it started a new ovulation cycle, this time successful. Unfortunately, when the bleeding came then, it was super heavy, getting heavier and heavier the longer it lasted, so it had to be stuopped by hormonal pills. or it was mild but continuing for the whole month, again needed to be stiopped by pills. Turns out my body does not produce enough female hormones, so instead a lot of testosterone, which kept the bleeding going. My body just couldnt kick the new ovulation cycle in afterwards.

I have LUFS (leuteinized unruptured follicle syndrome) with my PCOS. Actually had super regular periods because my body was acting as if it ovulated (including hormone changes) when, in fact, my follicle would grow to be about the size of my ovary itself before being reabsorbed without rupturing. We were only able to find this by having daily ultrasounds around the time I was supposed to ovulate because we'd obviously been having fertility struggles so we were doing detailed tracking. I had never heard of it or thought it was a possibility before my diagnosis.

My second and third babies I've only had to use OPK and cervical mucus. My son (who was just born 3 weeks ago!) I tracked my CM and noticed I had the right CM a few days earlier than normal - I took an ovulation test and sure enough, I caught my luteinizing hormone surge just in time, baby-danced that evening and got a positive pregnancy test about 10 days later! Thank you so much for this! I was diagnosed with PCOS in February after struggling with infertility for a year. I never thought I had PCOS, because I’d always had very regular periods, but my reproductive endocrinologist still found elevated androgens and cysts (they said my ovaries look like chocolate chip cookies ! 🍪🍪). I was a little miffed when they put me on hormonal meds to give me a “real period” (which ended up giving me a large ovarian cyst that burst 😥) before starting the ovulatory cycle hormones. All my previous periods were fake??! Glad to now know a bit more about why one might bleed without ovulating. Happy side note is that the first round of hormonal treatment and an IUI worked, and I’m now 18 weeks pregnant! 🎉

A number of years ago my daughter was suffering severe abdominal pain along with other symptoms. She went to the Doctor who did some tests, but the results took a while to come back. In the meantime, she was so bad that she ended up in the ED, where they diagnosed her with ovulation pain. They totally ignored the fact that the glands in her neck were swollen, gave her pain relief and sent her home. She was sick for quite a few days (maybe a week or more). Eventually the test results came in. She'd had glandular fever. By the time she got the results she was well again. So much for the ED.

And I even watched medical documentaries like it was my hobby at the time! It just isn't something that gets touched on a lot, I guess. On the subject of ovulation pain though - when I was in high school, in music class there was a girl who just randomly during small group one day, casually said 'oh! I just ovulated' and my mind was BLOWN that she could feel it happen! And that's so young to be that knowledgeable about it too! I'm in my 40s now and I've never felt ovulation, ever.

That said in today's video when you were talking about painful ovulation you forgot to mention Endometriosis as being a possible cause when severe pain occurs (I could tell you exactly when i ovulated and from which ovary just from the pain level & location). It's very common in women with Endo to have painful ovulation soo mentioning endo as part of the answer to that question & to then tell people to talk to their OBGYN about it might get women a diagnosis before the disease spreads too far which causes a lot of fertility problems down the line. Other than that one detail the rest of the video was spot on.

"If you have irregular cycles (35 to 45+ days), when during that time, would you most likely be ovulating?" My cycles are ridiculous.. for example, my last cycle was 123 days... my current cycle is at 47 days so far... I Have ovulation test strips, and I use a period tracker app... but I've gone the route of, using the ovulation tests every day, multiple times a day, during what the app has deemed my "Fertile Window"... and have not gotten a positive result on any of the predicted days. This has happened multiple times to me and buying the test strips can get expensive when you're using them that much. I'm getting to the point where I think I will have to use the tests every day for my entire cycle multiple times per day, to ever really Know WHEN my ovulation has happened! 😓 I have only ever gotten pregnant once, and I miscarried at 8 weeks... I just want to be a mama so freaking bad.... this stuff is so dang hard.. And I've been on a waiting list for an OBGYN for so long. As a trans guy taking testosterone, I was specifically told to use birth control because testosterone won't prevent ovulation. For me, it has completely stopped all bleeding related to menses. I'm interested in the mechanics of this. Is the testosterone only interacting with the progesterone, and preventing it from rising, and thus dropping to cause the bleeding, or is it something to do with the build up of lining, so there's little to nothing to shed when that drop does happen? When I went off T to try to conceive, my first period was extremely light, only spotting and only lasted 2 days, compared to extremely heavy 5+ days from before i'd started testosterone. @sarahhartnett5629
@sarahhartnett5629 9 ай бұрын
You wouldn’t see the spikes in FSH or LH, because the estrogen and/or progesterone in the pill blocks those parts of the process to prevent ovulation. Your body doesn’t kick off another ovulation cycle because the hormonal feedback loop is stalled by persistently high levels of artificial hormones that basically fool your body into thinking you are already pregnant. That’s also why some hormonal birth control can have symptoms that are similar to early pregnancy - nausea, breast tenderness, etc.

For women trying to get pregnant, tracking your LH (so you see when your spike is happening) and basal body temp (BBT. To confirm ovulation) are really helpful. If you have an LH surge, but no increase in BBT, you can assume you’ve had an anovulatory cycle. Tracking BBT during your luteal phase can also give you an indication if you’re pregnant or not, as your BBT will rise with embryo implantation, and will drop back to your baseline with no implantation. There are lots of video out there in how to track LH and BBT accurately. It’s what helped me and several of my friends get pregnant, or you can do it just to figure out your cycle and fertile window in order to avoid pregnancy without taking birth control.

So I can typically tell when ovulation is about to start or after it happens, but as I started to control my inflammation with different helpful supplements it became a little less obvious when I was ovulating. The month we conceived I wasn't even sure if I actually ovulated because I didn't have any pain. I was checking lh with a different kind of test kit though and was surprised when it showed an lh surge. Great video!

🫵🏻🫵🏻🫵🏻🫵🏻 I HAVE A QUESTION: I was diagnosed with PCOS in Highschool (I’m now 29). I have had 3 babies. I also had my right ovary & tube removed. I also had a partial tubal removal of my left tube. DUE TO CYSTS and TORSION. However, my cycles are very regular. I can track exactly when my period will start. My “cycles” are anywhere between 26-29 days. Usually they are 27-28 days. Is it possible I’m still ovulating normally? You mentioned most people have irregular periods, I never have. When I was TTC with my kids, I noticed I ovulated later than day 14. Even thought my cycle was 28 days. Thank you if your able to answer 🥰🥰🥰

I'd love a video about NFP from a data perspective. My husband & I use the ClearBlue Fertility Monitor for the Marquette Method, & I use a basal thermometer each morning as well. When I explained this to my doctor she rolled her eyes & wrote down "rhythm method".

Do you use this for contraception? Or for trying to conceive? As far as data goes, I know NFP has been shown to be quite helpful for trying to conceive, but much less effective when used as contraception.

Count me in as someone getting their mind blown by the tubes not being connected to the ovary! Also, just had a thought--if someone is on birth control for, say, severe cramps, and they want to get pregnant...do they just get off BC and they're miserable every period until they get pregnant or go back on? Genuinely curious.

I am glad the finite egga quesrion was asked because I was wondering myself. And one reason it took so long to learn as much as we now know about the female anatomy is because the male-dominated early medical profession just didn’t look too deeply into it, based things like heart attack symptoms solely on the reports of men, etc. Another reason is, say what you will about the internet, but it has opened up so much information for women that we simply did not have access to because no one was telling us because the people who knew were too few and far between. I mean, a decade ago, the majority of people still thought the concept of virginity was a real thing.

@@tracy3418 true, we did the whole calculation (is our relationship ready, do we have enough money, do we have a support system, how are we going to manage work and studies) before we started 'trying'. I think it's the parents responsibility to create a stable environment when you make the decision to start a family. (That's different if it just happened).

@@mrlsdutch we waited to start trying, but ideally people are in a good place to start trying when they're younger. I don't super recommend waiting until 38 because it is a LOT more difficult to get and stay pregnant. It's ended up costing us a lot more money to get pregnant now versus if we were younger. It's a balance. Everyone should do what is right for them.

This is reminding me of when I had an ovarian cyst and a gallstone attack at the same time. The cyst was on the opposite side from the bladder, but my GP said I probably didn't know about the gallstones, and only investigated the cyst. He said I couldn't tell if the pain was on my left or right side because abdominal pain got confusing. The cyst resolved fine on its own with some discomfort, but no big deal. The gall bladder eventually got removed after a second ER visit.

I would absolutely love to hear more from you regarding irregular cycles and thyroid problems. How does that affect fertility? How can I calculate my fertile window when my cycle can vary 30-45 days long? Do I ovulate 12-14 days in a new cycle or is it 12-14 days before I get my period? Before I first started taking Levothyroxine for hypothyroidism I lost my period for 11 months. This was accompanied with a long weight loss process. However since I first menstruated at 11yo I have had irregular periods. Average is 35 days but it’s hardly ever exact.

They put me on birth control (nuva ring) earlier this year and it’s caused me to have periods every month. However, I want to have another baby. But I’m worried that if I stop the birth control, it will stop my periods/ovulation again.. what should I do?

Hey, not a doc, but I was on Nuvaring for almost 10 years and also have hormonal imbalances (possible PCOS). You are not ovulating. Nuvaring and similar hormonal birth control actively stops ovulation. It’s supposed to, an intended effect; if you don’t ovulate, you don’t get pregnant. The bleeding you have as a “period” during the off-week of hormonal birth control is NOT biologically the same thing as a menstrual period, it’s more akin to withdrawal from the hormones. Fertility and hormones are so individual and complicated, you really should talk to your personal doctors about next steps. They can help set you up for a smooth transition off birth control and take advantage of the time to get your body as ready as possible for pregnancy. Wishing you lots of luck!! ❤

Which is hellishly painful. It is like getting punched in the back with an iron fist that comes out through your heart and you can't breath. Fun times. 😑
