It’s becoming more and more evident there are a host of things women are dealing with that not only destroy our bodies, but they also destroy our confidence and ability to show up and go as hard as we want.
Dr. Gabrielle Lyons, a functional medicine physician and muscle-centric advocate for metabolic health and longevity, shares startling data that 73% of people are either overweight or obese. If you’re a woman dealing with PCOS, hormonal imbalances, and gut issues, chances are you are absolutely struggling with your weight.
This episode is for you today if you’ve been fixated and obsessing over cutting calories, doing more cardio, and resorting to starving during the day only to binge eat at night. Let's be honest, there’s a bunch of crap being marketed to us and deciphering reliable information from BS myths and none-evidence-based beliefs shared from ulterior motives and political agendas is making a lot of people feel hopeless, overwhelmed and confused. Let’s end that crap right here.
Key areas of re-information we’re focusing on in this episode include:
Cycles of crash dieting are absolutely destroying your health
Move away from the fat phobic model to an empowering muscle centric model
Health at any size is devastating people and is not that same as loving yourself
QUOTES:
“Obesity is a symptom of unhealthy muscle, it is not the focal point of the problem.”
“Saying health at any size is a real thing, I’m not sure where that came from. Health and worth are two different things.”
“High quality protein is animal based protein.”
“Being sedentary and not moving is what I consider to be a sick state.”
“Obesity is definitely one of the leading causes of cancer and death.”

Found Lyon last year on a podcast - and it challenged everything I thought I know about weight and health. I’m a 45 year old male, with an amputation and have gained weight since I was 25 - I was unable to do any cardio at all (due to scar tissue), at least not enough to follow the mantra were always told of “eat less and move more” Every time I had tried to go for a jog or walk, I ended up in a chiropractor office, and on a box of anti-inflammatory, painkillers and muscle relaxers. A few times I literally could not stand up and was bed ridden for a week. I had done Keto diets, paleo and 19:5 intermittent fasting in the past with marginal success. Lyon’s words of “just build muscle - ignore fat” and “eat more protein” seemed simple enough … so I started 5 months ago. I took whey protein, 4 times a day; had a cooked egg and bacon breakfast every morning and ate my normal dinner. I trained with dumbells at home for 30 mins, 3 times a week. The result is fat literally falling off week to week, and being in the best shape of my life, more energy. Visible abs, well built shoulders developing well - and my watermelon belly is flat (which the tiniest remaining love handles that will disappear in the next few months) After 1 month, I had basic muscle that no longer needed pain meds. After 2 months I could do 2 dumbell movements and not wrench my back. After 3 months, I felt competent so booked a private trainer to teach me and guide me once a week.

Thank you for creating such a nuanced conversation about a topic that’s usually charged with body shaming. As an anorexia survivor, I wish I’d gotten this information a long time to ago - but every time this would be covered in school, food was always weaponized against us. Thank you❤

She starts to go into lifestyle changes that women/ people in general can make at 25:37 To summarize: It is super important to get 30-50g of protein as your first meal. Do the same for your last meal. This will protect your muscles and do wonders for your health as you get older.

Echoes my personal experience: 10+ years of moderate strength and functional training, combined with healthy fats, and modestly later and fewer meals improved my comfort level in many areas of life. Even sitting and dressing are easier now than in my 30s, when I was not overweight per se, but was not as fit. Also, strength training helped me more than yoga or stretching, but a combination is ideal. Kudos to three really good trainers at Balance gym in DC. I owe them a lot. For people with delicate or aging joints, it may be harder to figure out a solution. Any ideas on options to safely build base strength around joints could be helpful for many. Lisa, thank you for this empowering programmimg for women and all!

The health industry need to overhaul the BMI table, it was designed in the 1950’s by a statistician and in todays world, body builders can be classified as obese which is ridiculous! The fashion industry need to make sizes GLOBALLY consistent across every country, seriously Size Zero is for a baby not a grown woman! STOP making us feel bigger than what we actually are and make sizes more realistic for today’s woman! The food industry need to STOP making junk food cheaper & more accessible than healthy food! The food industry ALSO needs to STOP adding sugar to everything! Seriously when you bake bread from scratch there is NO sugar in the recipe! And the education curriculums need to educate our kids from an early age about what is good food to eat every day food and what is a treat when it’s a special occasion. We need to start changing the system and promoting healthy & strong is empowering and an investment in your elderly years to be more spent in a more fulfilling capacity instead of ending up with illnesses from an early age. 😢

Why are we like this? It’s mind blowing we stay stuck and don’t change anything.. this includes racism and politics and EVERYTHING else. Have we really came far as a society? It seems not. So how do we go about changing everything you said because I’m sure there would be millions of Americans who agree. Now they’re pushing the skinny agenda again.. it was curvy and now it’s back to being thin. We as adults can figure out what Hollywood is doing and how they use stars as puppets to push their agendas, but young girls don’t know this and idolize these stars. Every decade has a different body type they idealize, so how to we stop idealizing bodies and accept ALL body types. Now I’m not saying obese and jumping on the whole “accept me as obese” because that’s unhealthy as well. It’s just everyone has different body shapes.. so I’m saying don’t idealize the extremes, like being super skinny, obese, or thin with a HUGE butt. The kardashain’s have literally normalized having plastic surgery from BBL’s to lip injections and it’s taken over society and social media. Again another EXTREME.. being skinny with an abnormally HUGE butt. But there is no money in self-love, being healthy, having a normal body. There is only money in having low self esteem to the point of getting plastic surgery to fit in with what the jacked up society idea of beauty standards. Be so unhappy with yourself that A. You need big pharma because you’re obese and need pills OR B. You spend money on plastic surgeons because you either have low self esteem and feel ugly, or you feel you need to look a certain way to look like “everyone else” and fit in. Or C. You take supplements to be extremely skinny and need energy to do all the cardio to stay skinny. Back in my days it was hydroxycut (before they banned those specific ingredients) which gave me all this energy to be a cardio bunny because I thought I was “fat.” It’s crazy that we spend money on all this stuff that is fleeting when we should spend it on therapy and fixing our issues. Myself included.

33:58 The vegan thing is such a good point because it loops back to the idea that responsibility of carbon emissions, recycling, waste, etc should not be put onto the individual consumer - it is THE FAULT of the companies, celebrities and the uber rich and their yachts and private jets, etc. Any and all *wasteful* and *greedy* use of resources.

This is just my opinion.. what’s crazy is I feel that people who over eat and are overweight or obese (I am overweight) are eating to fill some kind of void or over eating as a coping mechanism. I also follow a fellow YT’er who is super in shape and recently had a breakdown and took a break from YT and came back and made a video and said she’s been dealing with an eating disorder on top of everything else she had been dealing with. So on all her social media platforms you see this “strong and healthy” person, yet in reality behind the scenes she had been dealing with an eating disorder since her teenage years. So just because you see someone who looks thin doesn’t even mean they’re healthy either. I think this just shows how many Americans need some kind of therapy and are dealing with unhealed trauma etc. when I see an obese person my main thought isn’t like wow they’re lazy and they lack self control.. I look at it coming from a sensitive place like, “man I wonder what they have been through?” And I say obese only because it’s visually easier to see these people in everyday life vs. someone who looks fit and yet in reality they’re also dealing with a disorder behind the scenes.

So I got into fitness 6 years ago but took lifting weights way too far. I have a mesomorph body type and I hold muscle really well. I do not wish to be muscular anymore. My arms embarrass me the most. People love to ask if if “I can kick their ass” 🤦🏾‍♂️ if I gain any weight it goes to my arms and makes me look extra buff. I try to stay in a caloric deficit year round but it doesn’t work all the time. 😭

Is it possible to heal a damaged metabolism? I loved this content and most of it I’ve already figured out over the years by research. But I am not sure about my metabolism. I know that I ruined it with all these diet’s and stuff and even though I gained a lot of muscles and having a fit body, I can’t eat more than 1000 calories without gaining weight. It’s horrible! I can’t heat less! Is there anything I can do? And I am not talking about chili or any other spices to make my food a bit more stimulous. I am asking for a true healing of my metabolism Thanks so much ❤

I’m confused guys. If my ideal weight is 125lbs and I’m supposed to get 1 gram of protein per each pound of my ideal body weight, that’s 125 grams of protein per day. 125 grams = only 4.41 ounces. And the doctor says 5 oz in the first meal and 5 ounces the 3rd meal. That’s 10 ounces = 284 grams of protein per day. 2+ times disconnect from 125 grams… 🤷‍♀️
