I'm not talking about fasting yet. Sauerkraut is awesome for the liver and gut. Artichokes are great. Add those to your burger if you want to create a twang. Gluten free mayo if you like mayo on your burger. Avoid tuna in a can. It often has mercury in it. Extra virgin olive oil is the only oil I use for the foods that need it. Avocados are great as well. Love Dr Jamnadas. He has completely changed the way I eat and how I view food. It was one of his talks I first came across and my mind was blown. Through his videos, the KZbin algorithm brought me to this podcast series which has helped me fine-tune my lifestyle immensely. Both my parents have passed away, in their early 60s, my mum from cancer (she also had early onset dementia) and my dad from a myriad of illnesses- undiagnosed diabetes (where he had to have his feet amputated but the doctors claimed he was still not diabetic- only for it to end up on his death certificate), heart disease, end stage renal failure to name a few. I'm only 25, but I feel like I need to start now in order to avoid these illnesses that cost my parents their lives so early on.

I have been "intermittent fasting" basically since I am 12 years old. I have always hated breakfast with a passion and when I was olf enough to be able to skip it, I did. Everyone was mad at me, and told me skipping breakfast is basically worse than smoking, but I didn't care, it felt right to me. So I have been doing something like 16/8 for most of my life. I am 40 now and I look like 30, if even. Maybe lucky genes, but maybe it's also related to the fasting....

You should have added some whe food carbs to your vegan diet. For example, oatmeal with breakfast and potatoes or some whole grains with your dinner. The starches provide needed calories and satiety. The keto diet is not sustainable for the body because it is intrinsically inflammatory because of its high fat and protein content. Do more research to confirm this, and consider switching back to the whole food vegan diet. All the best to you.

That's the genius of fasting... You learn what is best for you. I drink my coffee with favored cream but no sugar cause sugar is too sweet for me. I vary my fasting schedule and don't keep up with the windows by only eating when I am hungry. So if I get hungry but can't stop to eat I just extend my fast. If on the other hand I only have 10 minutes to eat then I eat in 10 minutes. Sometimes people get hung up on whether it's a clean or dirty fast but I look at it like this there are all types of fast: clean/dirty, dry/ water, veggie only/meat only, IF, OMAD, ADF and so many eating/fasting windows and no one is the same. Take your time, do your research and find out works best for you and your body. It's all trial and error. Fasting is NOT a diet. It's a lifestyle change. Fasting is learning to eat less. In America we overdose on food, eating too much and too often. Remember information (applied knowledge of what works for you) is the key. From there gleam what helps you reach your goals and throw out the rest. This is a marathon and a lifestyle change or you will be right back here trying to do a quick fix. Don't beat yourself up for slip ups. Just reset and start again. Detoxing and learning how to live differently isn't easy but well worth it.

Given that, I found two things that are very helpful for staying on a schedule of intermittent fasting. The first is sugarless chewing gum, which satisfies the oral craving. The second is flossing my teeth when I'm tempted to snack; that totally does away with the desire to eat.

The processed foods had already been eliminated, so it wasn't so hard. Once you lose the sugar cravings, they don't return. If I smell bread toasting, I still want some, I won't deny it. But I made my own bread for so many years, that's natural. Oh, and I'm 64. Work out with yoga/rowing every day. Something y’all can copy and paste quickly! Starts explaining at around 3:00 if you’d like to add any other details. As always, work with your doctor! 1. For 2-3 weeks, eat organic, as is natural foods (fruit, veggies, meat that is grass fed, no antibiotics). AS MUCH AS YOU WANT. Lots of Water. 2. For a couple of weeks, randomly skip meals everyday. Don’t have breakfast, then eat lunch, dinner. Next day maybe eat breakfast, don’t have lunch, eat dinner, etc… Just learn to skip meals. Drink lots of water. 3. For another 2 weeks, have only two meals, within 6 hours of each other. Only water, black tea, black coffee outside the 6 hour period. Only 3 meals on the weekend if plans with friends and family are made, no snacking between. 4. For about 2 weeks, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, only one meal a day. The rest, the same as step 3. Always water! 5. Then try a 3 day water fast, following the 18:6 the other days.

When I used to train in the gym and also do a lot of cardio my trainer would tell me to eat carbs for energy and graze all day . That may have worked in my 30s but as soon as my training slowed down and I didn’t modify my eating habits I started to gain weight . Not an enormous amount but it was creeping up on me and then when menopause hit I thought just put it down to that . I’ve always been pretty health conscious and reasonably active so putting on weight was very frustrating . After watching many videos like this one I adapted the fasting method but researched into why it works . The surprising fact is we’ve all done it in our lives for example in my 20s after a late night , eat at midnight but then pretty much fast the next day so I wouldn’t put on weight . It was mostly an impulse thing . Fasting makes so much sense . I have tackled the menopause weight , fasting, working out but not the high intensity cardio of the past . My waist has shrunk among other things and my overall health is so much better . Fasting . Such a simple philosophy yet so logical and effective

Limit animal protein in your diet to no more than one small serving per day. Favor beans, greens, yams and sweet potatoes, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Whole grains are okay too. While people in four of the five Blue Zones consume meat, they do so sparingly, using it as a celebratory food, a small side, or a way to flavor dishes. As our adviser Walter Willett of the Harvard School of Public Health puts it: “Meat is like radiation: We don’t know the safe level.” Indeed, research suggests that 30-year-old vegetarian Adventists will likely outlive their meat-eating counterparts by as many as eight years. At the same time, increasing the amount of plant-based foods in your meals has many salutary effects. In the blue zones people eat an impressive variety of garden vegetables when they are in season, and then they pickle or dry the surplus to enjoy during the off-season. The best of the best longevity foods in the Blue Zones diet are leafy greens such as spinach, kale, beet and turnip tops, chard, and collards. In Ikaria more than 75 varieties of edible greens grow like weeds; many contain ten times the polyphenols found in red wine. Studies have found that middle-aged people who consumed the equivalent of a cup of cooked greens daily were half as likely to die in the next four years as those who ate no greens."

I like what you are saying about listening to your own body. Been on a keto diet for a while and feeling great with no gut issues. But I was at a gathering a couple weeks ago where the fare was salmon sandwiches and a rich banana pudding. I ate just a small amount of each trying to be polite. That night I had acid reflux for the first time in months.

I had a burger and fries due to a luncheon (same reason as you…politeness) and that evening I couldn’t understand why I had acid reflux and my stomach hurt. After reading your comment, I realized it had to do with the “foreign” food I had that day.

Doctor Jamnadas, YOU ARE PURE GOLD. I live in Perth, Western Australia, and am looking for a Doctor like you, SOMEONE WHO CARES FOR THE HEALTH OF HIS PATIENTS. Unfortunately, ALL the doctors I see are in it for the money. From the moment you walk into their office, they keep looking at their watch. If you ask them a question about DIET or HEALTH they will tell you " I am a doctor, Not a DIETICIAN ", and will start preparing a referral to a dietician. Recently I asked my doctor what he thought about NIACIN supplements. He replied, "What is Niacin?" Needless to say, I now have a new doctor. Please recommend a good doctor in Perth if you know of one. Dr. Chattergee, enjoy your shows, you are GOLD too.

I've worked as concrete/rebar/cribbing and forming contractor for over 25 years. I still have my abs (im 44.) I will attest to this lifestyle of one meal in the afternoon as successful way of life. Were bending and moving all day and a meal in the morning or during a work day would slow the crew down/ less productivity. One meal a day works!

I understand the going gradually but what severely chronically ill people need to know also is learn “the how” on what to do when you are on several medications. What to do? Can you take all the meds on an empty stomach? We need some guidance on this please.

My snack of choice is nuts, mostly walnuts and most of the time that allows me to skip lunch. I usually drink a protein shake for breakfast as well as 1 or 2 20 oz coffee with cream. And sometimes the nuts with a couple cans (4 oz) of salmon and maybe a hard boiled egg for supper. I do drink a lot of water but sometimes I drink juices like grapefruit, cranberry and pomegranate with no added sugar. A few times a week I'll have grilled chicken with broccoli, coliflower & carrots 🥕 🥦 for supper. Today I drank grapefruit juice when I got hungry and the juice absolutely killed my hunger 🙂. I eat a tuna salad 🥗 plate a couple times per week also. I have changed to this type of diet when I started a weight training regimen. I started this change in life style at the beginning of April 2022 because I was out shopping for the next size short pants, going from 38" waist to 40"! 🤨😡 I got angry with me and decided I'm NOT going to buy 40" pants! I'm going to get back in shape, tone up and gain muscle mass as well as strength. Stop eating so improperly and DROP weight. I turned 60 years old on August 6 2022. I had gotten up to 238 lbs, first day weight-in in April. It took me 6 weeks to drop 26 lbs and am now shopping for 36" pants again instead of 40". 🙂 By the way I'm a 6'1" tall male. I'm finding it hard to to drop the last 12 lbs to reach my goal of 200 lbs but I think thats due to the fact that I am remarkably stronger than when I started, so I figure I'm gaining muscle mass as quickly as I dropped so much belly fat. Maybe I'll pepper in some fasting soon, but I worry about slowing muscle gains...😐 phew I got wordy lol 😆 This has been some great info, sir and guests. Thanks 😊 much. 👏👍👍 PS. My weight training includes keeping my pulse rate elevated for the entire 1.5 - 2.5 hr workouts, so "cardio" is covered at the same time. I'm going start getting on my bicycle 🚲 a lot more too, especially on my weight training break days. I'd like to get more lean. All this has really done me quite a bit of good, including an amazing increase of energy every day and I feel YEARS younger again lol 😃.

Hello Dr. Chatterjee! Greetings from Germany! As I learn more about the "Fasting Movement" the more I think, this could be not just only a Western problem, but a problem stemming from the American way of eating. Looking to my right and left neighbours, neither the French nor the Polish eat, like you and your collegues describe. We eat three (to four, mostly on weekends) times a day. We eat what we grow locally (think like in the EU) per preference. And we Germans tend to eat a light early dinner as well. To widen the horizon, the rest of the world usually has just enough, or even not enough to eat! In conclusion *I* think this might be a very priveliged problem. What is your opinion on this? Are the health problems in third worlds the same? I love your interviews very much! You are structured, you really interact and bring new ideas to the table. Your language is easy to understand and very professional and precise at the same time. Regards! PS: please excuse grammer and spelling 😕

Humans in the 3rd world, almost always eat whole foods, more so natural and/or organic foods. They do not eat packaged, highly processed foods, but even if they do in certain regions, it wouldn't be on the grand scale as we in the West. Many ethnic tribal groups, whether they be in South Asia or Africa, tend to eat either meats or vegetables, but again, it's pretty much whole foods and all unpackaged natural foods. This does make for much healthier humans, can prolong life/make for longer lifespans.

Processed food is the problem of Asian countries also not only America. Now a days organic and home cooked food is luxury for middle class people and because of busy lifestyle they end up eating pizza, burger and cake. Moreover no-one is giving a thought that what is there in their plate. Health conscious and clean eaters are there but a few... diabetes is a big challenge for Indian medical system.

The UK has a huge obesity problem. Glad some of Europe still has some more traditional habits. Sadly American fast food is in more and more places. I was sadden to hear in the news that obesity has been increasing in Germany and recently in France as well. Our Stereotype is all French are slim but reports of obesity are starting to come out of France as well.

After hearing Dr. Jamnadas I began intermittent fasting. Then I listened to another doctor say eat 30 different vegtables per week. Blood pressure was 150/89. After one week of eating for 6 hours per day - 2 meals of veggies plus baked meat. Blood pressure now is normal. Today 104/74. Exciting to learn how to slowly move into eating once a day some days. Exercise daily and and increasing positive social connections. (After watching people who were 100+ were socially active with friends who positively supported each other.)

In the 90s eating 6 or several small meals or snacks was the new thing recommended. "They" said 6 small meals kept insulin down back then. I do great if I have just eggs, fruit or 2 w nuts, greens or salad w avac, yogurt/kefir & nuts, a small fish filet and a couple veggies, (often spilt in half for last 2 meals). I personally don't like eating a lot in one sitting. Nobody ever explains if a large meal spikes blood sugar any differently than if you ate same foods, spread throughout the day. Is a large meal more inflammatory than a small one? I enjoy eating healthy keto and fasting, but can get too thin. My solution is to eat more fruit a while, since it's my favorite food and limited on keto. It's not perfect but I think we all have to find what works for us.
