What is the COVID BA.5 variant and why is it reinfecting so many people?
Coronavirus Updates - As BA.5 spreads, the White House warns that Covid is not over. BA.5 is the most contagious (most transmissible) covid variant so far. The subvariant has become dominant among new U.S. cases.

I'm in South Africa and I can tell you that a lot of people who got covid (BA4 or 5) have said they either felt like they had food poisoning days before or days after they were diagnosed with covid. The stomach virus symptoms seem to be symptoms of the variant itself, not a separate illness.

I'm 60, and I tested positive the 4th of July. I haven't ran a fever in 20 years. My Son and his Wife got it, (they both work in schools) and I came home and my partner was sick a day later. My throat wasn't to sore, but Hers was pretty bad. Fever topped at 102, and the muscle aches were the worse, and any sleep I missed in the last 60 years, I caught up on. Went to my brothers and his wife that I hadn't seen in several years, (before I had symptoms, I pulled out of their driveway and thought metallic taste, fever came on in an hour), and he is extremely HIGH risk. With a pace maker, leukemia, he just got over pneumonia, and COVID. And is 76 years old. So I've been praying they haven't contracted it from Me. They live in the country, and aren't around a lot of people. I've been SO concerned about him getting sick from Me. Today is, day number 12 for them, and he says they are, "good." I spent around 2 hours in their home, eating, using the bathroom, took a couple selfies. OMG, the guilt of thinking you might of made someone sick, is very upsetting. So I've been isolating, this is my day 12, and going to try and go back to delivery driver/work today.

Most people ain’t overly infectious until about 2 days after the first symptoms. The biggest issue is how long after it seems to be away are you still infectious which for loads of people we know looks like 9 days making a mockery of the 5 days in the UK bs.

@@skylineuk1485 Actually they say 2 days before the first symptoms is the most infectious time. which is scary becuase you wouldn't know if the person got it . Right.. Just try to avoid anyone if infected. Over here or us is also 5 days only.. and they're already running around.. so that's why this hasn't ended... For most people such as children & healthy people, the vaccinated, it isnt as bad anymore.. but really for the already ill, weak and diseased..it can still be fatal.

I’ve just had Covid for the second time in 6 months. I was so surprised how different it’s been this time. No fever, no cough.. but sore throat and the main sx was extreme runny nose which was almost like v bad Hayfever with itching and tearing eyes. Tinnitus and an unreal feeling.. 3 days of that and that’s it. The sore throat went away quickly with Betadine throat spray which we can get here in Asia. Last time I got GI sx a couple of weeks after I had recovered. I wondered it it was related. I also was sick a few times with other bugs after that first Covid infection. I tested positive on 7/1/22 and retested seven days later and I still tested positive. I retested seven days later again (which is today) and finally tested negative. I could've tested negative a little earlier than 15 days but I just wanted to keep it consistent with the 7-day timeframe. The symptoms that really bothered me was the sore throat, migraines, and persistent dry cough. It's been over two weeks and I'm still coughing, however, no where near as bad as a couple weeks ago. I did not develop a cold/runny nose (thank God). So anyways, here are the symptoms I experienced in order: painful sore throat, lower back pain, migraines, dry cough, on/off low-grade fevers, chills, loss of smell and taste. FYI: This is the first time I've gotten Covid and I'm triple vaccinated. I've always worn a mask since the pandemic started in 2020 and have never let my guard down. This shows how contagious this Omicron variant is. 😔 Stay safe people! 😷

I'm a healthcare worker in the ER and remarkably, this is my first bout of covid. I believe I got it due to a flight I took, not from sick patients or coworkers. I have much of the same symptoms as you: started with throat tickle, ramped up to very sore throat by the end of the day. At that point, I developed a fever that ranges between 99-101 and never goes away. 2 days in, I've lost my sense of taste and smell but it's variable. Some things smell/taste fine, others weird, others not at all. Right now, the fatigue and nausea are the most debilitating symptoms. Started coughing today, at first dry, now it's becoming more productive. In respect to your food poisoning, I can't believe how many patients were coming in with those symptoms during the time you had it. It's leveled off but for awhile, every other patient had severe diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, etc.

I just got over it after a week. Late last Sunday [8 days ago] I felt like I was coming down w/a cold/flu. Haven't been sick in many years and then it was just that yearly Dec 1. slight cold. Monday I felt sick w/a light fever, slight cough every 10 min. I slept terribly, tossing and turning, sweating and very exhausted. I hadn't had a bad flu in over 20 years. Took covid home test=positive. Next day, Tues was exhausted but felt a little better during late afternoon, went to the ATM. That night I was exhausted, couldn't sleep again, sweated tossed around..AND I had the "most terrible sore throat" ever!!..I didn't have Hall's throat lozenges, got some the next day, so I chewed ice, drank ice water every 20 min, used an ice pack on my face and throat to small benefit. Wed I was better, I'd shower twice a day all week in a 10 min 'Hot shower' then cold for a few min. trying to wake up my immune system. Ran some errands Wed w/a mask staying away from people. Still had a slight 15 min cough and I'd spit up flem a few times a day. I got early morning sun for 15 min, took good fish oil, 3 eggs and vitamins but no drugs like Plaxlovid. Thursday I felt a lot better, not tired, not feverish, slept good and even better on Friday. Now that was 5 days, the first 2.5 days was the worst. It's Monday now and I don't think I have it, going to self test maybe. I wear a mask 'everywhere.'.. "Except" the gym a few days before I felt fever. I do wipe everything 'after' but I should do it 'beforehand too.' Maybe got it in that "small steamroom" for 10 min w/5 older people in there. I won't do that again, lol. My Starbucks French Roast tasted like Folgers for a few days, lol. Been vaccinated twice w/the booster 5 months ago. I hear a newer better 2nd booster coming out this fall so I'll wait for that, plus I hope it's true to being stronger immune wise if you've had it.

Most people haven't had it or if they have, haven't even recognised the fact - that's how severe it can be. That said if you are 80+ years old with a compromised immunity (which at 80 most are) it can be as severe as, if not worse than influenza. Be wary of the jabs though - they are probably worse than the disease itself, especially if you are not immuno-compromised..

Dr Mike I was treated for strep throat every summer I visited my grandmother as a kid. I returned one summer as a much older person. The sore throat was intolerable. I would drool because swallowing was more than I could handle. 2 Vicodin didn't touch it. A 90 year old cousin is a compounding pharmacist and he made me a "throat swab". It is mentioned in the Merk Manual but it is not specific. I was given Q tips that looked like an animal swab because it's longer than those encountered in the hospital. Swabbed my throat and my throat was better. Eight hours later swabbed it again. Sore throat gone. I could taste eugenol or oil of cloves but there was more to it than that. Goodluck. Glad you are feeling better.

I am amazed you got sick, and very glad it never reached a "concerning" point. Funny (to me) your symptoms seem very similar to those I had back in February 2020. I just did not get them in one "lump". First I came home with a slight fever, but strangely started shaking uncontrollably(hands mostly) for about 2 minutes. That night the fever increased, and I decided to increase it some more by staying in bed with a burning hot watet bottle on my chest. Next day feeling wobbly. By day 3 back to normal. 3 weeks later sore throat, not a sound out. Also took 3 days to resolve I even felt great. 3 weeks later a very strong back ache (never had back pain before). Could not find a position to lay flat without feeling it. Then same thing, it took 3 days to totally resolve and I felt great. 3 weeks later upset stomach...you get the drill. I do not feel like it was "long" covid, there have been no symptoms after an "annoying" 2 to 3 months in early 2020. I was not tested, stayed away from the med. offices like the plague at the time- no offense a lot of my friends are MDs.

Sore throat is pretty much always my first symptom when a cold or flu coming on. I caught something back in January (2 months after being boosted, and 3 days after being in a room with someone who tested positive) which began the same way, but then transformed into a week and a half of head congestion with a nasally voice. Hardly any mucus at all, although at times my nose would just start running profusely like a faucet. Never got tested for COVID so unfortunately I’ll never know what it was, but this had to be the most mild upper respiratory infection I’d ever experienced…Usually colds knock me down for at least 4-5 days.

Since the arrival of Delta and especially Omicron masks do not provide much protection unless every single person is wearing an n95 mask single layer ear Loops do absolutely nothing so they would have caught it either way that's the biggest misconception especially morso nowadays to put it bluntly it's more or less a false sense of security just like the vaccines are as I've known so many of my vaccinated counterparts who have gotten covid over the last several months and their outcome seems to be much worse than people like myself who decided to wait out the vaccination roll out I was sick for just about 4 days with covid-19 back in January with my symptoms progressively getting much better and snow blowing my driveway the same week whereas people like my boss were sick for upwards of 3 weeks and had to be put on steroids and antibiotics and it's been like that for many fully vaccinated individuals that I know and seen I know personally have one person who has had four doses and has had covid-19 6 times every time he has had it has been moderate and no walk in the park makes me really start to question the vaccines

literally just got over it myself, and yes, it started with just a sore throat, at which point i tested positive... it only lasted a few days and it wasn't even bad enough to make me want to stay in bed. I feel fine now, but despite not having a cough during the few days of having it, I have since developed a mild and currently persistent cough... It's just a nagging tickle in the throat... it's strange. I've retaken the rapid test several times and it's consistently negative, but this cough just won't quit... I'm not quite 2 weeks out though so hopefully it will go away soon. But to your point about the soar throat... This must be a symptom of the newest variants... This thing spread like wildfire through just about everyone I know.... Super mild, but the first symptom, and the worst symptom was that crazy painful sore throat... but it was totally manageable with cough drops... and that sore throat has been the main complaint from everyone I know. I tested positive on July 12-scratchy throat, 3 days fever 101.5, then 99 for 2-3 days, but not all day. Body aches during the fever, 2 bouts diarrhea, pain behind my eyes, lost 80% of my taste and smell which lasted 3 days and wet cough from upper respiratory (not deep in the lungs) until yesterday which got progressively better, mild stuffy nose. I had every classic symptom except shortness of breath. I am 52 & unvaxxed. I took 3 doses of IVM and made it through fine. Definitely easier because it’s summer so my schedule is lighter. I could sleep late and nap as much as I needed, I wish I knew what variant it was. I am in southern region of the US on the east coast. I wouldn’t describe it like flu, it definitely has its own set of symptoms but the fatigue is very similar. Anyway that’s my story-I hope my body builds up antibodies now. I let the fever run about 8 hours before taking 1 Tylenol, then took 2 more Tylenol during the course of my illness. I felt it better to let my body fight it for as long as I could, but the body aches forced me into a Tylenol. Wasn’t the loss of taste & smell weird? I didn’t think that was happening much anymore. I assumed I was zinc depleted and began 70mg zinc everyday and it quickly returned to normal. I also took 500mg quercetin, 2000 vitamin C, 5000 D, 6mg melatonin pm, nigella sativa seeds.

@@OtisThorpe518 Ok same thing happened to me-the loss of taste/smell came late to the party. What you can try to do is “train” your senses by exposing your nose to strong smells several times a day. Essential oils, perfume, peanut butter, mustard, Vick’s vapor rub. Not bleach, ammonia or alcohol-nothing dangerous. It’s like coaxing your senses into working properly again. Also up the zinc-this all related to zinc deficiency based on everything I’ve read which makes total sense to me since the body uses zinc when fighting infection.

I also recently had what was presumably BA.5. This was my first time with COVID. I am vaccinated and have had two booster shots. I am 52 and a Type 1 diabetic (meaning I've had it since childhood and produce no insulin at all). I was in NYC for some personal business with my other half. My other half was having some pretty major surgery and I was there as caretaker. We arrived on June 28th. I felt my first symptom (a throat tickle) on the evening of July 4th, so I must have contracted it sometime on July 1st or 2nd. The only thing I was doing was walking from my hotel to local shops to get food or medicine, as I was otherwise confined to my hotel room. I was masking when indoors, so I probably contracted this on the street while in transit to local shops. The only symptoms I had were a sore throat and a cough that was triggered by phlegm in the throat. I also did not have major problems eating or drinking with my sore throat. Actually, the only time I felt the sore throat was when I coughed to clear the phlegm from my throat, but I will say that the sore throat in these instances was pretty darn sore....similar to feeling like I swallowed glass shards. I did not have a fever, chills, headaches (or aches in general), fatigue or any other typical flu symptoms. Only the sore throat and the corresponding cough. I tested positive on the morning of July 5th. I tested negative on the evening of July 7th. My symptoms were pretty much gone on the evening of July 7th, as well. So this was pretty short-lived for me. My other half never got it. I did get a separate room on the morning of July 5th. All in all, it wasn't too bad. I credit that to the vaccine and booster shots.

Remember, it's not ALL ABOUT YOU. If you have a healthy immune system, count your good fortune. Seriously. Remember that you can feel fine, while carrying the virus that is shedding, and SPEW THAT SHEDDING VIRUS EVERYWHERE YOU GO UNMASKED, infecting babies, the elderly, those with immune disorders/dysfunction, and never even realize you're leaving a path of misery and long-term health symptoms for others. It is WONDERFUL that you had such a mild, easy infection and I'm sincerely happy that you did. Now, THINK ABOUT SOMEONE ELSE BESIDE JUST YOURSELF. Just because you and I are fortunate doesn't mean that our social responsibility ends with us, we have a social obligation to be BADIC DECENT HUMAN BEINGS not forget that not everyone is as fortunate. You (and I) have been fortunate. Remember that, and also don't be a d*ck who doesn't give a d@mn about others who might not be as fortunate.

@@le_th_ How do you know this person was spewing their virus everywhere? Vaccinated people can carry the virus and not be symptomatic but still shed it too. All my vaccinated friends have been traveling, going to concerts and getting covid. I'm not vaccinated because I have horrible reactions to vaccines so I've been homeschooling 3 kids for 2 years and barely seeing anyone.

@@le_th_ I agree with you. Where I live though nobody bothers anymore. I wore a mask but started to notice that I was almost about the only person in the supermarket still wearing one so 3 weeks ago I stopped, although I did leave a lot of space between me and the occasional old person still masked. I've avoided Coronavirus for 2 and a half years but within a fortnight of unmasking I got it. I honestly don't think that we should bring back restrictions anything like they were but places like shops, chemists, hospitals and surgeries etc, where vulnerable people have to go there should still be masks. Places like pubs, restaurants, concert halls, sports stadiums etc, no, because vulnerable people can avoid those places during a spike.

I had travelled in mid June. I had my 4th booster at the end of May and I wore a mask much of the time dependent on requirements etc. I returned June 23rd and felt a little tired but ok and thought I would have a nap and chalked it up to my long journey. Well, the next day, I had a very sore throat, fever, and extreme fatigue along with a ghastly headache that wouldn’t stop! I tested positive on June 25th! This was my first time getting Covid after 2 and a half years! I finally tested negative on July 12! It’s been basically 3 weeks. I lost my sense of smell and taste and my sore throat lasted for quite a few days. I had chills and a cough! The fatigue and lack of strength is extreme. I did keep well hydrated with water and tried to eat ok- fruit, toast mainly. But not much. Anyway I feel much more human today and I am gradually improving my mobility and need to improve my strength and stamina! It has really been a set back but I hope to be on the gradual entry program back to my old self! Wearing a mask in public areas and sanitizing is so important. I hope you feel better soon ! 😷

I got Covid on 6/23 while on a business trip to Denver. I had the same symptoms as Dr Mike and 2 weeks later, still have a residual cough. I was not prepared at all to quarantine at the hotel. My advice to those who travel more than a week is to pack a thermometer, pulse oximeter, cough meds, etc. just in case.

I have also joined the COVID-19 club. Mine started 3 days ago with a little cough I didn't think much of. That night I had shaking chills and when checked the next day i had a fever of 101° F. My home COVID-19 test was negative which is frequently the case with COVID early in its course. The next day I felt worse with a productive cough, myalgias, headache and sore throat and a temperature up to 102° F. The COVID-19 test on that day was strongly positive. Other things I had that I haven't heard much said about was a fine red rash and urinary frequency and urgency and no, I didn't have a urinary tract infection. I feel much better today. I haven't coughed all afternoon, and I no longer have any urinary frequency or urgency. I still have anorexia (but no nausea or or diarrhea) that has resulted in a 10 pound weight loss so I guess COVID-19 is good for something (LOL).

@@RickMartinKZbin It's not rare for home COVID tests to be negative in the first and second day of symptoms. If positive, the test can be believed but if negative, a repeat test on the third or fourth day of symptoms is advisable.

The US, as with other countries, will have to eventually move to a prevention based health care system, with natural medicines, diet, exercise and common sense. I'm not against modern medicine, it has benefits in some areas. But obviously it is highly limited, and has failed miserably with Covid.
