Something about Donna's reaction after seeing the Ood that's been on my mind. Slavery in our past is obviously something we can't do anything about. It's there in our shared history and we have to accept and acknowledge it to move forward into a better future. Or at least a future we assume is going to be better. Actually going there and finding out that we just keep making the same mistakes, perpetrating the same evils a thousand years in the future when in your mind it's going to be beautiful, wondrous and utopian, I can imagine that would be soul-crushingly saddening, disappointing or depressing. These aren't just some despicable ancestors who are locked in place by history. They're the children of our children's children. We can affect them by the legacy we leave behind as a people united by the planet we live on. Only in that case, the legacy either was tainted or it was discarded because "If we take these people from their homes, strip them of their personhood and make them subservient, we can sell them or make them work for us in the name of getting money." It turns my stomach just thinking my descendants might do that. Actually seeing it myself might just provoke the "I don't want this" reaction in me... But not before I smack my blood out of my great, great x 27 grandkids, yelling "we do not do that in this family!" But ultimately my point is, I can definitely understand her reaction. Nobody wants to be confronted with their own progeny doing evil to others.

I love this take from you and yes I agree with your sentiments. I think you could say that across all parts of society from global warming, societal’s viewpoint on gender and gender roles, war. I think the aim is to prevent the mistakes of our past but there’s always someone (weirdly enough really close to political positions of power) that destroys the harmony or utopia of a future world of peace, tolerance and respect. It is difficult to face the reality of what our yesteryear ancestors and present characters in the world today are doing, but it must be acknowledged and faced with purpose to change. Or else there will be no future to change. And that’s not what our generations and future ones should look forward to

Here we go. Our first proper view of UNIT in the new series, I think (although they're mentioned in Aliens of London). The Doctor first worked with them in The Invasion in 1968, before becoming their scientific adviser during the 1970s. There's a question mark over whether those 70s stories were set in present day or in the 1980s, a decade later. That's why the Doctor can't remember here exactly when he worked for them.

While the episode you met her in gave the impression of her being in love with the Doctor, watching her in Classic Who never gave me the impression that she had any romantic feelings for him. aside from the ncuti-who episode from a few weeks ago, you've also seen u.n.i.t. in the slitheen two-parter way back in series one, and in the series three finale with that weird helicarrier the master helped to develop. the story you're watching here is, i think, the first time they've really been emphasized though. the fella in charge, with the cap and no beard (😆), is sort of a substitution character. that role was originally meant for one of the doctor's oldest and closest friends, brigadier lethbridge-stewart-father to kate, whom you met talking to ruby the other week. this wouldn't be the last time the production team tried to get the brig's actor, nick courtney, in, but this was toward the end of his life and he had unpredictable health issues. they *did* finally rope him into a couple episodes of spin-off the sarah jane adventures, though. and the actor's death and character's long shadow was made a sort of big (if subtle) undercurrent in later seasons. it's just after nick courtney passed that they introduced kate-a character who, curiously, originated in a semi-official fan production from that decade-and-a-half that the show was off-air.
@GhostPurple695 ай бұрын
the doctor and the brig first met way back in 1968-before he was a brigadier, and before u.n.i.t.! then he was reintroduced in the next season, with a promotion and in charge of this lot here. after that, the doctor spent the next several seasons working closely with them before the brig and u.n.i.t fell back to an occasional recurring role. nick courtney's final appearance was actually in the show's final season-so that's *21 years* he kept playing this character!!
@GhostPurple695 ай бұрын
the doctor's line about how he used to work with u.n.i.t. in "the seventies-or the eighties, i can't remember" is a quick joke about one of the oldest and silliest bits of doctor who discontinuity, that fans like to call the "u.n.i.t. dating controversy." on original broadcast, most of the classic u.n.i.t stories were set in a vaguely-defined near future-not by much; just maybe five-ish years. but the writers and production team didn't always remember this, so you get this strange tangle of indicators on when basically any u.n.i.t story is actually meant to take place-and in hindsight most people now shrug and just assume they're set somewhere around the time when they were broadcast, 😆

The Sontarans are meant to be a clone race, so in reality they should all look the same, but they decided to cast two different actors as the Sontarans, so facially they are going to look different. Remember, it was Kate's dad, Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, who started UNIT after meeting the Second Doctor, Jamie and Victoria in the London underground during the Great Intelligence invasion. From that one encounter he took a proposal to form a specialized division of the UN military forces to help combat alien threats. UNIT got it's first outing in the Troughton era story The Invasion, which saw the Cybermen attack, and became a mainstay of the 3rd Doctor's reign. After Pertwee's Doctor regenerated, there were a could more mentions before UNIT was dropped for six and a half years, when Alistair came back for two 5th Doctor stories, Mawdryn Undead and The Five Doctors. After that there was one more appearance in Seven's second season, before being softly rebooted in Nine's Aliens of London. Alistair would go on to have a guest appearance in The Sarah Jane Adventures, before the character was killed (of old age) off screen in the Eleventh Doctor story The Wedding of River Song.

Nerdshit comment lol - read at own peril! :D So on the "power scaling" (as much as such a thing is possible in DW ofc) the Sontarans are more of a mid field threat level in general. Their origin throughout DW media (some material contradicts others) is that they are from a high gravity planet, thus they are short, stout and pretty damn strong because of dense muscles and heavy bones. They were threatened at some point by an alien race called the Rutans who are highly intelligent, flying, dead body possessing, electric jellyfish things. The Doctor actually helps the Sontarans by giving them the cloning tech to make basically Stormtroopers from Star Wars in order to fight the Rutans back and it works - but then the Sontarans try to clone the Doctor and he buggers off ofc - the Sontarans then proceed to overuse cloning to the point we see them now. The military got so large they just took over power and now the whole species are just clones. They are still fighting the Rutans and have been in stalemate for something like 50.000 years. Power and Tech-wise they are more on a Cyberman level (Id put the Cybermen above them easy tbh) and nowhere near Dalek or Timelord. They do have "bad" limited timetravel tech much like humans in earths future, like Jack. AND they did catch the Timelords with their pants down in a classic who story (that I really dont care for myself) I tend to really like Sontaran stories though overall. They are a fun bad guy in both classic and new who even if new who sometimes leans to much on using them for comedy. Their actual "theme" and purpose as a villain is "colonialism". They arent "evil" they just think that the land youre on belongs to them more than to you and they got better weapons lol

The Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith were never a romantic item they were just friends like a uncle or neice the romance between the Doctor and his companions only became a NuWho thing and to be honest i always found the whole jealousy thing annoying because the Doctor has had many companions male or female as glad i was to see Martha again she wasn't the same character as she was in series 3 she became more of a damsel in distress. The Sontarans like the Daleks, the Cybermen and the Master are another of the Doctor's old rivalries and have first appeared in 1973. The bit where you said Doctor Who should reflect on real life no I disagree with that Dr. Who is meant to be escapism from the real world sure there are the politics in there but they are always subtle it's not brain science or something to overthink things about too much at the end of the day it's just fun entertainment. Doctor Who being "continuation" is a very rare thing there are references here and there but continuity in Dr. Who is a very rare and complicated thing depending on the writers mood and whatever continuity suits them. You made a good point about why it's always earth the alien invades why can't they ever invade other planets or why they never do another story set on an alien planet with another alien invasion which they don't often do with NuWho.
