You're actually wrong about kids getting hyper after they eat. Kids 100% get hyper after they eat. In schools we schedule things around this fact. If the kids go play outside then go eat then go back to class, you just wasted half the afternoon. You need to make them eat then send them to play outside before going back to class. I absolutely believe you that anatomically this makes no sense, but that just means there's another non-medical explanation, not that it doesn't happen

As a doctor with severe allergies (anaphylaxis) myself, your point about allergies is so important and we need better awareness!! You can grow out of allergies but you can also develop them! For example, penicillins are one of our most effective antibiotic groups; if you’ve grown out of your allergy, it might be the best option! Love your vids Dr Mike 😊

Yup I’ve never had any sort of allergies, but recently I had to take amoxicillin for a tooth infection. I mostly just had a rash and hives for like 4 days or so after taking it. Weird it wasn’t during, but after. I’m not sure how you’re allergic after it should be out of your system? But yeah now I have that allergy apparently. I’ve only taken it once and was fine, but this is years later. 🤷🏻♀️

I developed a shrimp allergy when I was twelve and didn't realize it was an allergy, because all it did was make my throat scratchy. It wasn't until I was sixteen when I touched shrimp again and it made my throat swell up a good bit, but not enough to cut off airwayd, that I realized I had an allergy to it. It died down within an hour but I've stayed clear of it ever since, I don't want to test wether or not if I'm still allergic or not because there's that chance it could have developed into a more severe allergy then it was before

The sugar rush study I read had kids and parents in a room, and in one part the parents watched the kids play with toys and each other. Then the kids were given sugary snacks, and the researchers noted that while the children didn't behave any differently, the PARENTS were the ones that started acting differently. In expecting their children's behaviour to worsen, they started intervening in situations that previously they were okay with. When interviewed the parents had to rate their children's behaviour before and after, and the researchers found that in almost all cases, the parents rated their children's behaviour as way worse on the sugar, even though objectively, the difference in the children's actual behaviour was negligible.

About salt killing slugs: Slugs and snails, like us, have a very high water content that they need to maintain to survive, but unlike us their skin is very porous, this is how they get their water. They don't drink water like other animals do, they absorb it from the environment (this is why they are often seen in large quantities in the morning when there is dew or after a rain shower). The trouble with absorbing water through your skin is that it goes both ways, and they can very easily lose water through their skin. When you cover them in salt, the salt draws the water out of their bodies via osmosis, causing the slug to die of dehydration. The reason humans can eat loads of salt, is because we're so much larger, and therefore have a much much larger amount of water to expend (we also have much more sophisticated methods of retaining water), but the same principle does apply to humans. If you eat too much salt, you may feel like your tongue, mouth and throat are dry even if you drink water - because they are filled with less water than they should be. And consuming large amount of salt can lead to comas and even death due to removing too much water from cells. It's just that the amount of salt that requires is huge, compared to the handful of salt being all it would take to kill a slug.

SLUG QUESTION ANSWERED: Water moves in order to dilute salts & slugs have incredibly porous bodies meaning water moves through their flesh very easily. By pouring salt on slugs you’re drawing so much water out of their bodies that they dehydrate and die. (salt has a similar effect on humans, just not to the same extent. It’s why we get thirsty after eating salty foods)

@@abdulwakil2613 Salt dissolves into water, technically slightly changing the composition of water to where it's utilized differently within the body, I feel there's a bit of a misconception that salt "hydrates" or "retains" water but realistically all salt does is give and help with regulating and balancing the bodies water content. Electrolytes after a workout come out through sweat, hence why having an electrolyte rich drink handy is a good thing while also having pure water. As someone with a penicillin allergy, it can be extremely frustrating that doctors never believe I'm allergic. When my daughter was born via c-section, the anesthesiologist was dead set on using penicillin with my spinal. As I'm being rolled into the ER, he's telling me he really doubts I'll have a reaction since most people who think they're allergic really aren't, but if I do have a reaction, I'm in the best place to have one. About 5 minutes into the c-section, I start vomiting, my blood pressure bottoms out, and he's pushing fluids like crazy to try to keep it up. He pushed so much fluid that my heart started struggling, so now they've got a cardiac specialist in there who ended up having to monitor me for days. And I couldn't hold my newborn for hours afterwards because I was so out of it and felt like crawling out of my own skin. It was a truly awful experience and 100% avoidable. A couple of years later I had strep throat and even though I told the doc at that very appointment that I am allergic to penicillin, what drug do you think she called in to the pharmacy?? Very, very frustrating!

Little known fact! The Eustachian tube is just the vessel in which the pressure in the ears is equalized. It's actually your inner ear cavity behind the Tympanic Membrane (eardrum) that is causing that pressure/release when you feel the popping in your ears. The eardrum begins to flex inward when negative pressure happens in the inner ear and pops back out when pressure is normalized. This is why yawning or opening your mouth wide helps reduce that pressure since the Eustachian tube is indeed located in the back of your throat and adjusts pressure accordingly.

Cat allergies: I know tons of people who were allergic to cats and grew out of it, but ONLY because they started living with cats. It's exposure therapy, just like allergy shots (shocked he didn't mention this.) My favourite example is that an old roommate's girlfriend used to come over and avoid my cats like the plague. I worked at a Hello Fresh warehouse for about a year, and I was SHOCKED when I looked at their "plant based protein ground" and saw how many carbs were in it. Sure, there was a decent amount of protein, but that little 10 ounce block had something like 50 or 60 carbs in it. That's a lot of carbs to add to a meal that probably already contains carbs!

Just use your brain and don't add carbs to it. So just don't have bread or pasta or rice with it. Treat it like it includes those things already. It's not that hard, I do it all the time. Amazing. Fun fact: According to the latest research in the microbiome field, taking probiotics is probably not so smart of an idea. On one hand, in most store-bought probiotics, the number of bacteria that are actually alive and fit enough to colonize your guts are negligible. On the other hand, a healthy micribiome is not just about the amount of bacteria, but the diversity of the bacterial population. Most of these probiotics are made of one bacterial species, typically Lactobacillus species, which are prominent in the gut micobiome, but not the most prominent. So, overall, taking probiotics, or food that supposedly can be good for the gut microbiome has a minimal effect on the recolonisation of your gut, and might be even harmful in some cases because it shifts the natural diversity of the bacteria. The only surefire way to build back a degraded microbiome is fecal transplant, but, for obvious reasons, that is only used as a last resort. (Sincerely, a microbiologist)

I never knew that not wanting to eat was a known effect of GAD! I have had severe GAD from childhood and unless someone offered me an exceptionally rare treat, I just never wanted to eat because my stomach was always in knots and eating made me nauseous. Mealtime with the family was a huge ordeal for me (which made it hard on the whole family, leading to a lot of fighting and more anxiety). Then as a teen I was left to my own devices a lot, so I would go days without eating. Needless to say, I got extremely sick, but no one really intervened, or even thought to ask me if I was eating. I got so weak that it eventually scared me enough to propel me to start forcing myself to eat small amounts regularly. Over time it became easier and I was able to get both this and the GAD under control, but it took years of therapy, meds and consistent effort.

THANKS for confirming that probiotic foods CAN actually help you feel better during and after an antibiotic therapy. I was starting to think it was all just my imagination (placebo effect, which I'm fine with as long as it helps), but hearing from a doctor that eating my yummy bifidus yoghurt with some fresh fruit mixed into it might actually have a positive impact makes it even tastier. As for the the allergy question: I think I somehow trained my immune system to no longer overreact when confronted with cat allergenes. When I got my cat, I sneezed every single time I cleaned her litter box, and her little scratches would itch for hours. At first, I sometimes had to take antihistamines in the morning so I wouldn't have red itching eyes all day. However, over the course of the months, things got better. My theory is that through her little scratches, she brought a tiny amount of allergenes under my skin, which is similar to what they do in certain desensitization therapies. Also, I never started freaking out and trying to avoid contact with allergenes. I WANTED to get used to it, and it worked. Sometimes I tell people that I bascially just willed my body into accepting the fact that I love cats, lol.

"You can drink any type of milk" That kitten who cannot digest cow's milk:
@emu0719813 жыл бұрын
Fun fact, kittens are not lactose intolerant otherwise they wouldn't be able to digest the milk from their mothers. They lose the ability to digest lactose as they get older. Most mammals have lactose in their milk, notable exceptions are a certain type of wallaby, whales, bears and some seals.

@@emu071981 Adding on to that, you shouldn't feed cow's milk to your cat. It's not healthy for them. Which was said earlier, but I didn't want anybody thinking your comment meant it's ok for cats to drink cow milk

I was really caught off guard when people started "debunking" the health benefits of beyond/impossible, because I didn't think that was ever even the point? The point is to satisfy cravings for beef/pork without actually killing an animal. Was this unclear? Am I getting gaslighted into thinking this was marketed as a health product rather than an animal rights product? Where did that notion come from?
@Shant3ll9983 жыл бұрын
I don’t think they ever marketed themselves as healthy, because they’re not. I didn’t understand the whole debate/debunking either because I don’t think anyone is eating something processed for their health. But not a direct hit a Mike I assume because he was asked the question to answer.

Probably the same people who were impressed at how skinny their friends with celiac are and decided "gluten free" should be a diet fad. I wouldn't be surprised if it's just people convincing themselves that veganism is "healthy" so they can continue to ignore the animal rights aspect without rejecting it outright. "I'm vegan for my health" is less combative than "meat is murder."
@ximar0ckstrx3 жыл бұрын
People are debunking it being health food because that's one of the biggest pushes vegans force down your throat to switch. It's "healthier for you". No. Its really not.

It is healthier. There is 0 cholesterol in plant based products. Eating animal meat is extraordinarily unhealthy. It’s just so bad for you. So yes, vegan processed products are healthier than non vegan processed products. But are they healthy standing alone? No, it’s better to not eat processed food. But if you’re gonna, why would you want to hurt an animal to do it when you don’t have to? Here. We made you your garbage food that you love so much, with no animal cruelty. It’s what you want, right? The taste? The look? The smell? Done done and done. Now there’s no excuse. I mean, people will look for one, but there is none.

You should do a deep dive into EDS!! And the wacky conditions that can come with it that aren’t talked about it. MCAS, POTS, the correlations… I’d love to see you dive into the research and bring awareness to the topic. It’s a really interesting area!

I don't want to be that guy, but drinking milk (with less fat) develops tolerance over time. That's why continents (America, Europe and northern Asia) that had it abundant have more of that gene.

I can answer the slug question. It’s because of Osmosis, water is drawn outside of the slug by the salt.
@Memelander3 жыл бұрын
5:28 the answer to that is osmosis. When you put salt on a slug, you're essentially making the environment outside the slug drier than the environment in it, causing a movement of water from its cells. Since the slug's body is unable to rehydrate the cells fast enough, the cells quickly die without water, and since the slug has much less cells than a human, this is enough to kill it. Meanwhile humans are large enough that if you put salt on their part of the body, even if that part dries up, the circulatory system replaces the lost water quickly enough. Is it possible to dry out a person like you dry a slug? Yes it is. The Egyptians used to embalm a person and keep them in salts for some time to fully dry out the body to preserve it. Its just that it takes a much larger amount of salt to do it. Also, any salt that you eat does not get a chance to drain water from your cells since all parts of the digestive system have liquids in some way, which are absorbed by the salt. The salt is quickly taken and removed from your body by your ever-diligent kidneys, so that answers why we can eat salt. So that fully clears Latoya's question and I hope it taught you something new as well!

Fun one to help prove your first question. I loved dairy products when I was a kid, became lactose intolerant when I was 16, can now 20 years later introduce some lactose in my diet in limited amounts and be fine. So yes like your taste buds your allergen tolerances can change. My dad did the same thing with his cat allergies(funny he’s now more allergic to dogs now)

Regarding his ad read, I just wanted to add (haha) that Walmart accepts EBT/SNAP payments for delivery of online orders in 45 states (the other 5 will let you pay online w/EBT, but you have to pick up the order). Could be helpful for people, especially at this time!

"A specialty trained shopper will hand pick the freshest items" is not quite true. I have watched these shoppers 'hand pick the freshest items'; they grab the produce or fruit closest to their hand and dump it in their cart regardless of product date, being over or under ripe or aged. I stopped this service from Walmart because of these shoppers. I'm sure there are good shoppers, but on a whole, not so much.

During the prevaccine pandemic, and buying for my elderly parents, I would order groceries at Walmart, Shaws and Hannaford. None could be trusted to pick out greens. More than half the time, they gave me packages starting to spoil that customers had avoided. Did have one bring me Kale because she said the Spinach didn't look too good. Wish I could have arranged to have gotten her everytime! Then discovered that a local CO OP was only selling at the door. A lot more expensive, but worth it for the freshness. (Only bought greens, and I could see them before they went into a paper bag).

It seems like a lot of people out there are very unbothered by nasty produce. I get grocery deliveries and pick up orders from the Kroger near me and also frequently have problems with what they pick out for me. I've actually seen regular people at the grocery store just grab some produce and go without checking it
