Over the years the team at Buzzfeed has dipped their toes into the world of creating some medical videos. I have actually appeared in some of them, but today I wanted to take a look at what videos they’ve put out and see how accurate they are. A lot of their interviews with med students and nurses yield some very true stories and experiences of what it’s like to study medicine! Some of their other videos, such as how to fight off a cold… not so much. Today we’re debunking miracle cures like Apple Cider Vinegar, the value of a good nasal spray, how much coffee med students drink, and some nightmares that actual nurses have had to endure.

I'm in med school, almost finishing, and never did an all nighter as well. I value my sleep more than my grades. Mostly because I don't learn anything while I'm tired.

When I was in grad school, I dated a guy who was first in his class in law school. I asked him if he pulled all nighters all the time (like I did!) and he said absolutely not. He treated law school as if it was a full-time job. He worked from 9-5 every day, just studying and going to class, and that was it. He didn’t go through the same panic every other law student went through, including while prepping for the Bar exam, and he was always able to go out and do what he wanted, when he wanted. I know that process could work in any field, but he was really the only person I knew who actually did it, no matter what they studied. I wish I had had that kind of discipline!

it's actually way more common than you might think. i have never left my country and the same thing happens to me. spanish and english speakers have no clue of my true origin unless i tell them. at the end of the day it all comes to phonetics. if you can manage to properly replicate all of the sounds of the language, and know how to use the words in a sentence, you can pretty much achieve that. but that depends from person to person and age does play a role.

It's more common than you'd think and possible for everyone to achieve, it's just hard. Accents are just how words are pronounced (sounds, basically). When people learn the correct sounds for the language/dialect, they are able to sound just like a native. The knowledge of individual words, contexts, idioms and so on may not be there but the sounds, thus the accent, will be.

Also from old people, my grandparents used to put them on us when we had fever only that it was water with vinegar... Some people still do it in my country and if i am totally honest i did use it on my kids a few times, but not over night and it was only when fever didn't go down and stayed at or close to 39 even after meds. I probably will not do it now if i know it doesn't work, but when u grow up being told even by doctors in my country that you should do that you do it.

I didn't study psychology and when I was heavy into reading about it after playing persona 3... this didn't happen to me. years later I noticed that I was able to predict a few mental issues that were later confirmed and I attributed it to having read in depth into a few of the theories obvious including Jungian which I think is probably closer to the truth than Freudian. (they found out later with a psychologist and told me, I hadn't told them my prediction... or they committed suicide when I warned people and they didn't believe me....)

My cousin actually did successfully diagnose herself in med school, and solved a family mystery too. When she was learning about Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, she thought she had it. Spoiler alert, she did, and so do many, MANY family members, myself included.

I diagnosed myself with ankylosing spondylitis several years before a doctor confirmed it. The pain caused by an inflammation just feels different from general joint pain, muscle pain or nerve pain. Sadly I had already developed some serious deformities in my SI joints before the doctors took me seriously. If you KNOW there is something wrong with your body, don't give up. Having constant pain is not normal. "You're too young to have these problems" is bs. It took me ten years, but I finally got the help I need.

Fellow Zebra! My family thought it was RA, and clumsiness. My friend suggested EDS when at my appointment as safety human. My doctor did a few tugs and pokes and had a lightbulb moment. A year latter and my chart finally has hEDS in my diagnosis list. My aunt who has chronic migraine, weak teeth and has had numerous joint injuries that needed surgery is setting up an appointment to ask about EDS.

I love the parts with honey for the cough. If you had grown up when I did, in central Kentucky, you would have been given honey, lemon juice and a teaspoon of bourbon. We used to say "It won't cure your cold, but it sure made having one a lot more fun." And mother's would rub a drop of bourbon on a teething baby's gums. It was the 1960s.

One of my highschool teacher's if u fell asleep he would literally sneak up and spiderman jump onto your desk, idk how he did it so perfect I never saw him fall but it was always hilarious, he ALMOST had to do it to me once but I felt him creeping up lol. Used to be a med student. Dropped out 2 years before graduation because I wanted to be a designer. Dad forced me into med school. Now that I'm out, I love listening to medical podcasts, read medical journals and of course watch Internet doctors. Only because it became a hobby and not a responsibility.

My mom once got a patient who had a tampon up her vagina for MONTHS bc someone told her "if you switch from pads to tampons you dont really have to change it also you can have sex while on your period AND not get pregnant", so she just left it there for over 6 months iirc. She only went to the hospital bc her husband refused to go down on her bc of the smell, my mom thought "oh okay hes a bad partner but lets take a look anyways just as a standard procedure" and oH BOY WAS SHE SURPRISED BY WHAT SHE FOUND THERE

Fun fact that I didn’t know until it happened to me; coughing too hard for an extended period of time can actually fracture your ribs. Had Covid and bronchitis at the same time, and ended up in the ER because I felt a pop in my ribs. Still healing, but not so painful anymore👍🏻

I had an unexplained seizure last year, after never having one before, being perfectly healthy, and no family history of seizures. I went through college by stressing out at unseen levels and decided never to do that again. Went through university by studying for no more than 6 hours every day. Never failed an exam and scored above average. The key for me was not to stress and I think I gained more from those 6 hours than I would do if I stressed for 10, 12 or 15 hours.

As long as my fever isn’t dangerously high, I don’t worry about getting rid of it; I just let my body do its thing. It usually only takes a day or two to go away on its own. 🤷🏻‍♀️ And if it is high enough to be a concern, I talk to my dad who’s been a nurse for 27 years and/or call my PC doc.

I feel so crappy when I get a fever I just can't let it ride. I almost always take tyenol to break it..Same with my 7 year old she stops eating and drinking whines about aching and becomes extremely lethargic. My 5 year old slows down a bit and my 2 year old still plays like nothings wrong just naps longer so I don't treat thier fevers.

@Fredrik Larsson By the time you are 2 years old, the brain cells that allow you to hear human-made sounds that you are not exposed to regularly die, which means you are not able to hear some sounds anymore. That's where accents come from, we try to recreate sounds we don't hear with the sets of sounds we do know how to make. For exemple the French "R" English-speaking people can't make or the English "Th" that French people can't make, both because our native languages didn't expose us to the sound of it so we can't hear it. So anyone who has learned a language after the age of 2 is susceptible to have an accent, even if it becomes their primary language after that.

Im not in med school or anything but I value my sleep more than anything. I've done EMT school, Fire Academy and currently in Paramedic school while working a job on the side. I NEED to put things aside for a period so I can get a good amount of sleep. If I dont sleep or pull an all nighter, I am all over the place and will not learn anything or do anything well. It's also not true. There are some maggots that only eat dead tissue (those are also sometimes used to treat wounds) but there are also maggots that only eat live tissue or both. So having them in a wound is definitely nasty.

Seems like a lot of this interest could be rooted in empathy to really connect and calm patients. She really wants to understand her patients...and that is not only to offer them better care from a classic medical perspective, I bet, but also to be able to emotionally calm them down or work with them to be efficient and to hold onto her compassion. It is so much easier to feel compassion when we have some experience even in a limited sense...of what someone is going through. Best of luck to you both.

Care to disagree on the wet socks advice, at least partially. When we were kids, our mom used cold wet socks to make us feel less uncomfortable when we were running a fever. She was rather hesitant about giving us little ones medicine to decrease the fever, only using it when it went up too high, but she DID look after us and do whatever it took to make us feel better. The cold socks always felt amazing on my overheating body, making me feel more comfortable and thus able to sleep. Decades later, I tried it on my husband when he was running a fever, and it worked. He actually dozed off into a very healing sleep, without having to take any fever reducing drugs. I'd NEVER recommend leaving the cold socks on though. I mean, they get warm after a couple of minutes, depending on your body temperature, so they'll no longer do anything other than making your skin shrivel. What you do is, you take the wet socks off as soon as they are warm, refresh them in a bucket of cold water standing next to the bed, and put them back on. Repeat a couple of times, until the patient is feeling better.

I get low grade fevers all the time because of an autoimmune condition. I usually follow what my body demands. I drink a medicated lemon drink (basically hot lemonade with aspirin and menthol), wrap up in a warm blanket, put an ice pack on top of my head and get plenty of rest and fluids. Edit: just in case it needs saying, obviously if my fever gets dangerously high I seek medical care. The above is for a fever of less than 2° above my normal temp.

The one with salty water up the nose is my mum's favourite. She doesn't buy sprays nor does she use distilled water, she just uses normal tap water (warm, of course) and enough salt for it to become quasi saline solution and we basically inhale it. I’m not even an ER nurse but the worst thing I’ve ever seen was when I worked on stroke, a guy had a stroke while having eye surgery and come to us to be thrombolysed, I wasn’t warned before going in the room what the situation was because we were just told to run down, he had blood shooting out of his eyes, it was like something out of a horror movie, made me rethink being a nurse that day, but the man came up onto the ward after and he was lovely and made a big joke about coming in for a surgery that was supposed to last an hour and ending up staying in hospital for weeks

I have Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. I began fainting frequently and had a hypertensive crisis with the fainting. I correctly self diagnosed what was going on by doing online research. The doc's at the hospital (4 days) hasn't a clue what it was. I told them where to read about it and I left with the diagnosis of Hyperadreneric POTSV(Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome). I've lived in this body for the last 63 years and as an Rn, have a good understanding of what's going on in my personal body!

My great grandmother used to make anyone with a fever soak their feet in a vinegar and water bath, then rub vinegar into soles of the feet and wear wool socks while they slept. Also put warm, steamed/sauteed onions on temples and forehead for headaches and fevers . Or put the warmed onions into a cloth, wrap around chest and throat for cough and congestion. Sometimes added garlic and rosemary to the poultice.
