Bekele will always be a legend in the sport and Cheptegei will also be a legend by the time he finishes his career. Great stories!

Anyone who knows distance running already knows Bekele is the GOAT. He doesn’t need the marathon WR.

If kipchoge wins the Olympic marathon next year again, I would argue that he is the goat of distance running

@@jellekraak7930 dominating one distance event doesn’t make you the greatest at every distance!! Usain Bolt isn’t the greatest runner ever. Just the best 100m runner!! Go look at Bekele’s resume

@@jameschaves5723 fair enough, i am not here to argue at all, but kipchoge has been on top of the distance running game for 20 years, and also became 5000m world champion beating 2 of the best runners in the world in 2003, including kenanissa bekele, and i think if he does when his third Olympic title next year, you have to at least take him into a count

@@jellekraak7930 absolutely in the discussion but I just think Bekele’s world cross titles put him way ahead

Bekele set his 5,000/10,000m world records when Cheptegei was 9 or 10 years old. In 2019, Cheptegei lowered both records in Valencia, while Bekele was 2 seconds off Kipchoge's WR in Berlin. Now they're competing in Valencia in a couple weeks. Just astounding. People who don't follow World Athletics have no idea what they're missing! On a side note, I don't have high hopes for Bekele these days but it's always a privilege to see him compete.

So nice to see that each generation inspires the next (Gebrselassie to Bekele, Bekele and Kipchoge to Cheptegei...), and very inspiring that the both of them overcame resistance / skepticism from their families to pursue their dreams. Crazy that many of these athletes never thought they'd have the potential to become what they did. Here's to hoping Bekele leaves his mark on the marathon in the next year or two!

I thought back in the 90's that Gebreselassie would be top of the mountain forever - and now I see guys like Beleke and yes, Kipchoge and it makes me realize those earlier generations just inspire the next group of young runners ! Bekele inspires us all. " We stand on the shoulders of giants ! "

But pressure like this is exactly why legends like that are who they are. It’s that relentless drive to always improve and compete with the best that makes them incredible athletes. If he was any other way, he probably wouldn’t be an Olympic gold medalist.

Cheptegai's first race abroad was in Bangalore. Finished 2nd still being 17 at that time, is unthinkable. I was not into athletics at that time so I never knew that such a GOAT raced in my city, nevertheless i'm still proud that he started his international career here.
