Dodge G56 Fluid Comparison with Gear Rollover Noise

This is a simple test trying to show the difference in transmission noise due to a change in fluid. The first is the ATF+4 that Dodge puts in the transmission, the second is MobilTrans SHC DC which is what Mercedes designed the transmission to utilized. The clips are the best out of several that I took. It's difficult to catch the gear rollover noise on video. It's hard to tell by the video, but the noise is SIGNIFICANTLY reduced with the MobilTrans. The general noise of the trans is much less, and gear rollover is much less. It seems like it's nearly as loud, but it's because the camera adjusts to the ambient noise. Pay attention to how quiet both MobilTrans tests were prior to the gear rollover noise and then make your comparison. It reduced the overall sound by approximately half.

I had a dual disk for years and finally got tired of it sounding like a combine with a bad bearing and put a heavy duty single disk in. I absolutely love it shifts better and now I get to hear the Cummins purr!

I've been running amsoil severe gear 75/90 gl 5 rated with two extra quarts over. Been happy with that, still shifts good in middle of winter, roll over noise is much better.

Gear oil is not for transmissions and will eat the sycros out of the transmission. The friction coefficient of Manual Fluid is different to allow the sycros to 'sheer' the fluid. This is why Manual Transmission fluid would destroy a hypoid differential, and vise versa is true. Gear oil physically destroys the sycros. Although the formulation for gear oil has stopped attacking brass 20 plus years ago by dissolveing it... when the sacrificial layer is rubbed off like its supposed too, the bond is so strong it takes a layer of brass with the coating as it is resuspended in the oil. It's like silicone on a painted wall, the bond factor is now the paint, not the wall or glue. Any fluid that bears a GL5 or the 5 rating in any combination is not suitable for SYNCROMESH transmissions. (get that fluid out of there and flush the box with some 50w oil before filling with the right fluid, like an MT-90, etc...)

@@caseyrevoir even Southbend clutch has said to use a full synthetic 75w-90 for the G56. My trans builder also told me full synthetic 75w-90. It's his warranty on the line and he's running same thing in the shops 1200rwhp truck. The G56 is like the NV5600 they will dang near run on anything you put into them. ATF is probably the worst thing you can run in them, it also wipes out the synchros. Dodge does that because it causes service work for transmission rebuilds. It keeps them in employ.

I swear my 241 transfer case is quieter after draining the recommended ATF and replacing it with full synth 5W30 engine oil. My NV5600 calls for a Chrysler spec fluid, primarily for synchro longevity I’m told. The best fluid I have used that meets that Chrysler spec is Valvoline MTF. Smoother shifts. With FAST coolers on the PTO covers I fill to overflow on the side fill and then add another quart via the fill plug on one of coolers. So, not only does it have more oil by filling the coolers, it results in one quart high over the stock level, which is the recommended fill according to many shops who rebuild these transmissions. Whether you prefer the G56 or the NV5600, either one is better than the stock 47 or 48 series automatics.

Negative. Delvac 50 has half the Boron content of the MobilTrans SHC DC. It's a close second place, but the MobilTrans is still on top. All of the technical specs are on the website in a multi-page articleif you wish to read them.

I went to the mobil oil after going to a solid flywheel, just get some noise at idle, otherwise, not much difference. I have a 2008 2500 6.7, I like it better now that I can get the power to the ground instead of going up in smoke with that lousy DMF setup.

My 2012 G56 is wore out at 100,000 miles and can be heard for miles away. Previous owner towed heavy horse trailers. G56 carry Insane pricing for rebuilds $3200..... I've experimented with many fluids and they help but for mine..... only slightly....

Have you considered trying a different flywheel? I know I've read a lot about there somewhere, people were saying the stock dampening springs don't hold up well and rattle the gears under heavier loads. Changing the flywheel to something with better springs takes care of the issue, but may change how it drives.

Both the MobilTrans SHC DC and the Delvac 50 are SAE 50 wt oils. I was never able to find the official oil offered in any multi weight grade.

dose your tranny make the same kinda rattle at idle as it dose when in 5th and 6th gear lugging i just put a dual disc in my 6.7 with a g56 and it makes a loud rattle when kinda almost sound like your truck at 1.49 on the video clutch works awsome shifts and hold real good but quite loud I did put a gal. of lucas oil in it and it helped alot but still verry noisey at idle and when you lug engine just trying to figure out if its normal not many 6.7's with dual disc clutches on here and i was wondering if it could be the input shaft bearing making the rattle

It does rattle at idle, the MobilTrans made it quieter as well. The added viscosity created a little bit of parasitic drag which keeps a very slight load on the clutch pack and helps to keep the center plate from rattling. It's not completely eliminated, but it is less.

yeah thanks I was thinking sumthing was wrong but i think its norman gear rollover noise for the g56 tranny thanks bud ill make a video and post in a bit so you can hear what mine sounds like

I talked to a few people and they said it should be quiet at idle with foot off clutch but i think they all run nv4500's

My transmission sounds exactly the same. All the shops around me told me to rebuild. Forget that- I’m going to drain and fill with better fluid and see how that goes.

In my opinion, and based on factual evidence, the g56 is a low price piece of crap. the whole cummins/g56 combo is what makes the ram the piece of s--t it is!!! My dealer doesn't know what to do with the noise in the new truck. I've been through 3 trucks, not making it more than 15K. The new one has a rattle in 5th gear at only 27 miles! I wont buy a 4th one!

JR Conner learn to drive a manual transmission. My G56 has 322km on it with the original clutch. Shifts nice

JR Conner mine has 200k miles on it with no issues at all. my only complaint i have ever had is the aluminum housing amplfies noise, so its a loud transmission. i still have everything bone stock on my truck and it works great.

My 370Z does this with a single plane flywheel. Of course I know what it is but others will just assume something's broken. Ot this bad! I'm gonna see of the half quart over trick will halp
