I've never done anything like this before. Looks so complicated. I just bought a 2000 Cirrus for $2000.00 from a dealer in Seaford, De. Drove it 50 miles and the timing chain broke and left me stranded on the turnpike for 4 hours. Called several shops and all agree I should just junk my car. Called the dealer I bought it from and told him, and he could not help at all, except good luck getting it fixed. Wishing I was mechanically inclined. Your videos do rock though. Looking for a GOOD mechanic in New Castle, Delaware.

These cars have a thing belt. If the belt broke, you may have valve damage. The cost to repair this would be only $500 or so in parts but probably close to $1000 in labor. Don't scrap the car, put it on Craigslist with the story of what happened and someone who is mechanically inclined will give you good money for it.

the high pressure power steering hose typically leaks, right behind the coil pack, on these engines. drips fluid onto the ex. manifold. ( i think there's a recall)

I've got a 04 Dodge stratus 2.4 dohc, and a couple years ago I had to put a timing belt in it. Now it's got a blowed head gasket with over 300,000 miles, but it still runs good. I was watching this hoping i wouldn't have to take the t-belt back off of it to change the head gasket. Maybe it's not worth fixing, but I would like to fix it just to see how many more miles I'll get out of it.

Great video series. Need to do this to my 04 sebring. Leaking oil in the same spot. Just did the water pump on my wife's 04 stratus with the v6...that was a pain to say the least.

I am currently in the middle of this project on a 2003 Stratus, and this video has helped me out quite a bit. I'm stuck trying to get the belt to fit over the tensioner pulley though. I'm going to get a friend to keep an eye on the cam sprockets while I push the belt into place.
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 9 жыл бұрын
Matt Huff Hello - It should go over without much effort if the tensioner has been sufficiently detensioned. I use butterfly type paper clips on the cam sprockets to keep the belt from flopping around when doing this.

Very nice video. I have an important question. I am working on a 2006 Dodge Stratus 4 door 2.4 with a broken timing belt. I have done a valve job, reassembled engine but I am stumped at this point as how to set the timing properly before attempting to start the engine. I have no reference to cam shaft positioning in relation to crank shaft positioning. I have located number one piston TDC but do not know if it is intake or exhaust and also do not know how to position the cam shaft sprockets properly. I have aligned the two marks correctly but do not know what relation they are to each other and to the crankshaft. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

excellent how to video. but I have three questions: why did the felpro replacement gasket look so different than the original, especially the area where it leaked? Why did you not compare the gaskets directly? You never showed that you checked the block and/or head was checked for flatness. How do you know it was not warped?
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 5 жыл бұрын
It's been many years, gasket materials change. I may have not shown on video but I would have inspected the gasket and noticed anything different that doesn't make sense. I checked block for flatness. Video does not purport to show every single thing I do when working on the car. For entertainment only. Use your own skill and judgment when disassembling and assembling.

Thank you so much for making these videos! Im doing the exact same job right now on a dodge stratus 2.4l. I wanted to ask you. When you placed the jack on the oil pan did you worry about it denting/ damaging the oil pan? I see you use the wood block to disperse the weight as evenly as possible. Im an amateur but I'm worried about breaking my oil pan. Is there any other way to raise and lower the engine (in precise increments) without placing the jack on the oil pan?
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 6 жыл бұрын
It will be perfectly fine as long as you spread the weight. Jack slowly at first to verify no denting.

Hello, I have a 2011 chevy malibu LT 2.4L. About 2 days ago, coming home from work the car started to make a knocking sound from inside the engine. It only knocks when I press the gas pedal. Please tell me what you think it might be. Thanks.
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 9 жыл бұрын
Blake Austin This video is about Dodge/Plymouth, but knocks from inside an engine are usually serious. If you are lucky, it is timing chain tensioner issue (I don't know if your car uses timing chain or belt). Otherwise, it could be rod knock which is very serious and can cause total engine failure. Get it looked at ASAP.

Is this a 2000 Dodge Stratus? Mine has 170k miles and all of a sudden lost compression in 3 cylinders. I'm hoping its just the head gasket. Thanks for the videos! I'm about to do it myself!
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 7 жыл бұрын
In Part 1 at the very beginning I explain it is 1998 Ply. Breeze. Compression loss on 3 cylinders sounds pretty bad - belt skipped teeth/engine out of time seems more likely than head gasket. It would be unusual for a head gasket to suddenly fail across more than two cylinders You can perform a leakdown test to determine where the air is going.

Hi, This is a great video but it would be helpful if you could tell what the torque setting are.I got confused when reading the specs. when I did my timing belt and head gasket torque settings.I found out the hard way that there is foot pounds and inch pounds and I over torque the camshaft bolts and shear one off. lesson learned. 1 foot pound = 12 inch pounds so 105 inch pounds = 8.75 foot pounds for the cam bolts.
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 8 жыл бұрын
+Jim Merten Yeah 105lb-ft will shear off a narrow bolt. I can't do a better job of explaining torque than the specs... Look at the bolt and stop tightening if the amount of torque doesn't make sense for the diameter of the bolt.

I have a question I have the same car and one day I was coming home and my car started chugging and chugging and wanted to shut off and my gauges we're going up and down all random and when I pulled up at home it smelled like somthing was burning ever sense I haven't drove it so I wanted to see if u might have a clue what the problem might be?
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 8 жыл бұрын
+Anthony Byus I don't know. I don't have enough knowledge about this car. Sounds electrical though - low battery, bad sensor, that sort of thing.
4 жыл бұрын
Have you fixed this issue? I have a stratus 99 2.4 with same issues. The shutting off thing was a bad camshaft sensor which is easy to repair diy and cheap. The burning smell was this same oil leak from head gasket with oil drops touching the exhaust pipes making them burn. Hope that helps

Someone is very firm that I should take the head down for $40 and have it pressure checked. Do you find that necessary on a blown head? The car did overheat, and was towed back by the previous owner.

You can do whatever you want, but if the head is bad, you will do the job twice.

not that i am a dummy around the auto, but these dodge engines, are a pain to repair , my daughter seems to not check things and the blond says no lights just run it till she stops , that said running the car for days , dad i have not had heat for 3 days , now it eats coolant ''''' i look the car over replace the thermostat and see the upper and lower hoses closed , i run and fill, the hoses open and the car runs mint, no smell , out the exhaust , no milk shake in the oil , but it seem;s that compression is in the fluid ,,, my question before i tear into this dreaded job , thinking a head gasket or a cracked head, ? why no smoke smell or milk shake in the oil , or oil in the coolant , just bouncing off this and maybe a part 4 of the common ill's and cure's
@ModMINI
@ModMINI 9 жыл бұрын
Bill Lake There can be several different symptoms for head gasket failure - oil in the water, water in the oil, blowby gas in the crankcase or blowby gas in the coolant. Sounds like you might have the last one. If it's been running that hot, you may also have a warped head...
