I'm British, I think the Defender might just be the best car ever built... But I'm sorry that Dodge Ram does not look like it's in 4WD, I've been staring at that front wheel for the last 5 minutes and not once does it look engaged... This must be staged... If this had been a fair test, of course the Ram should win, and that would be nothing for the little Defender to be ashamed of :)

@davidcullen51349 жыл бұрын
A lot of people don't understand physics. The Dodge has a light box, less weight on the tires, so they don't grasp the pavement. That is why they are spinning. That truck is designed and made that way for a simple reason, ability to have a heavy payload is what that truck was designed for. The Landrover, with 4 wheel drive, has the engine weight pushing down the front tires into the pavement, so because of that, the tires grasp the pavement. That gives the traction. If you put heavy weight in the box of the Ram to push the tires into the pavement as well, then the Dodge's tires will have traction also and no longer spin like that and the Dodge then wins hands down.
@G53X0Y0Z09 жыл бұрын

Nick actually it will because,the front is not a limited slip and doesn't have a diff locker, with the exception of the power wagon. regardless this is stupid because,if the dodge were in 4wd it would easily win with all that traction and torque, I'm a land rover guy, and they don't build anything that can even come remotely close to a stock ram diesel when it comes to torque. that rover has street tires, so has more contact patch on pavement than that ram also. meaningless comparison. towing or pulling, the weakest ram half ton would easily walk all over any land rover defender, the most powerful one has a 4.0 v8 which began life in the 60's as a Buick engine that Rover purchased from Buick in 63. its only making just over 180hp. off-road the defender would destroy the Ram though.
@DHFL7 жыл бұрын
rochab77 I currently drive a 2004 Cummins 4x4 diesel period and bone stock from the factory I have limited slip front and rear. and regardless of if it has limited slip or not in the front, it will not allow the wheels to spin backwards in 4-wheel drive. the power to the front wheels will force them to be spinning forward if it is in 4x4. I have done plenty of truck pulls and my front tires never spin backwards unless I am in 2 wheel drive. unless I am in two wheel drive. I tow welfare units (worksite cabins with kitchens & toilets with generators, etc) which weigh a lot, but the Defender hauls them up hill and down dale. One time, I had to fetch a 2.5 tonne cabin 100 miles from work. It was 10 miles down a single track with uber steep hills. I had to drop into 4 low, but she pulled that shit up a hill so steep I was pushed back in my seat and even my son commented: "Look daddy, most dangerous road!" I hate the fact there is no room in the cab, but I love the fact it has so much power and torque. Keep your American sheds with their acres of plastic and mirrors warning about shit behind! We all KNOW vehicles look small in a mirror FFS!

Ram must have been in rear wheel drive. Even without diff locks a 4WD one can't really lose because it weighs 2.5 times as much. The defender is still the better offroader though.

Try putting the Dodge in 4L (the same as the LR) and see what happens. All four wheels are spinning on the Land Rover, but only the rear on the Ram.

That dodge has no 4wd diff.
@Rich7351510 жыл бұрын
If it is not a 2wd, it has a two speed transfer case and the ability to put power to the front axle. It may have an open diff in the front, but even power to one wheel that has some weight on it would definitely help.

Does it really matter lol? Me and you both know there are only 3 reasons to get one of those cars and they are You own a big boat. You own horses. You are a douche. They are never going off road so why argue about their 4wd capabilities in the first place?
@Rich7351510 жыл бұрын
roflcopterkklol I have to admit that I don't understand the point of hooking vehicles back to back and trying to pull each other. Then again, I'm apparently a douche since I own a Ram 2500, but not a big boat or horses. Mine does go off road (and onto logging roads), usually dragging a tractor or skid steer. Most of it's off road time is snowy and/or rock roads in northern Ontario and there are a lot of times when a front locker would save me having to use a winch. It will get one eventually, but I need manual hubs first.

It's all about torque. On the last round. The lady was on the brakes and the tank couldn't pull it because it's diffs, we're not locked or in 2 wheel drive. Plus it's not just about weight and torque. It's also about how hight the vehicle is too. The center of gravity is off and can be altered so if you tug on the bumper ( just as an example) the rocks gravity will change from the center to the back, some cases lifting the front wheels off the ground and or getting pulled. Btw. That's one Sexy truck man!

I've owned a lot of 4x4's. Land Rover Discovery II was one of the strongest. Then came the Jeep CJ7. But the most fun was a jacked Nissan SE V6 extra cab I had. Did this same bumper pull with a Ford F-150. He lost each time. But we did learn that while the Nissan had more pull power, the cheap metal proved it was built crappy. On the 3rd or 4th pull he ripped my hitch and bumper clear off the truck. Funny shit, but I was definitely bummed. Killer video.

Pretty cool. There's also a video of a inline 6 cylinder Jeep Cherokee dragging a full size V8 pickup around like it owns it. Where the power is made in the power band has a lot to do with tug of wars like this, not to mention pickup trucks are ass light. Diesels and inline sixes tend to make their power down low in the RPM range, once momentum is started in their favor it's an uphill battle to beat them. It doesn't matter what the brand or model is.
@ГеоргийС8 жыл бұрын
why does ram use rear weels only?
@Ballenxj9 жыл бұрын
COOL! I can see why this happened though. The Landrover apparently has all four wheels locked up, in other words, the power is getting to all four without slippage or spinning. The Dodge on the other hand has an open differential, ie, only getting power to one wheel, making it effectively "one wheel drive." Now if the Dodge had four wheel drive, with all four wheels locked up, I think you would see an entirely different result.

That style Land Rover is the one they use all over Africa for safaris and it is a beast but I am still surprised that Cummins diesel couldn't stand up to it. That just shows the brilliance in the drivetrain of the LR. I once had an 03 Discovery and I had unhindered confidence in it's ability to travel on any of the steep terrain throughout West Virginia and Ohio. For the people that are making fun of Dodge for Fiat owning them, well take a look at the new company in India that now owns Land Rover. I'd put more confidence in Fiat than some unknown and unproven company. Fiat also owns Maserati and Ferrari. Are they junk?

what if the dodge ram is 4 wheel drive? i show this video to some peoples, they said "the dodge is not using 4 wheel drive, and is only outputing power in one of it's wheel. One of the best off-road vehicle VS for north american idiot, daily used, aimless, xxxxl size thing. Can anybody tell me what the purpose of rams or chevy trucks? Work? With gasoline engine? I dont think so. Make no sense paying $3000 gas monthly Speed? I dont think so. After 100 km/h they are nothing, because of its height they cant handle any fast curve (they can reach to 100 kmh as fast as vw golf) Comfy? maybe, it can handle at least 4 xxxxl asses Looks nice or charismatic? :) just a joke Then what??????????
@Rich7351510 жыл бұрын
At $3.50 a gallon and 15 MPG, $3000 a month for gas means that you are driving approximately 13,000 miles per month. I have the 6.7L diesel in my Ram 2500 and spend about $500 a month for fuel (14 MPG city/ 20 MPG highway).
@Yuu_Tuub10 жыл бұрын
Rich73515 First of all here in Canada gas is more expensive than in the US; $1.40 - 1.45 per LITRE (around $5.3 gallon). Second 15 MPG is so optimist value for this kind of engines, lets keep it at 10-11 (when loaded even lower). I have to admit I exaggerated little bit, but my friends who have these vehicles give me approx similar numbers. According to them, they spend over 2 grands and they drive like 6000 KM
@snipermonkey32110 жыл бұрын
ok, here is a guy with no respect towards american vehicles, what did they ever do to you? well besides be better. the dodge was in 2wd and going up hill so the rover had alot of advantages. and a dodge ram or a chevy are great work trucks, very reliable and capable of towing, offroading etc. so please have the decency to realise american vehicles arent bad so we can just get along
@Rich7351510 жыл бұрын
The big issue that many people outside of N. America have is that they judge vehicles based on their view of how these vehicles are used. My Ram won't out corner a porsche or out run a lambo unless you add 3,000 lbs of stone payload to both vehicles or attach an 8,000 lb trailer. I wouldn't expect an Aston Martin to be judged based on the amount it can tow, so why do we insist on judging a heavy haul vehicle like the Ram on ride quality, cornering ability or 0-60 unloaded? The fact is that you can attach an 8,000 lb trailer to the Ram an drag it up a mountain and still be comfortable enough to cover 600 to 800 miles a day (towing the same or higher weight trailer) without fear of having the engine or drivetrain give out on you (front axle unit bearings are another story). Compare vehicles within their class, which means that you really can't compare the HD pickups from GM, Ford or Dodge to anything from any other manufacturer.
@GingerThembo10 жыл бұрын

I am so sick of these bullshit videos trying to stomp big trucks. Range Rover is running a locked front end, open differential rear, and pulling in 4X4. The Cummins has an open differential rear and is pulling in two wheel drive. Lock that Cummins in four wheel drive, posi front and rear, and you can drag that Range Rover sideways.
@DWillis79 жыл бұрын
It's a Defender, not a Range Rover.
@peeprox19919 жыл бұрын
Monel Funkawitz It's a defender, and a stock looking one at that. No locking front or rear diff, only locking centre diff. Possibly traction control depending on model year. Either way, it's a very basic drive train at work - just very well designed suspension. The Land Rover sits on coil springs with proper radius arms at both ends rather than the leaf springs on the rear axle of the truck which allow wheel hop.
@monelfunkawitz39669 жыл бұрын
Just because a 300lb guy can pull a truck does not mean a 300lb guy can pull any truck. You can skew results in any direction. You can pull a Ford Superduty with a Chevette if you set things up right.

It is all about traction. Try the same with a 4x4 Dodge / Dually and toss in some bags of sand in the tub. Anyone that comes from the farmland knows its not about the size of the tractor, its about the power you can transfer. Am a Defender owner.
@techdavey34869 жыл бұрын
The Land Rover has a superb proper full time four wheel drive (most 4x4 vehicles only have part-time 4WD that cannot be used on tarmac because of the lack of a centre differential) A friends Shogun for example, ripped the tread off one of the tyres after using 4WD for just a few yards on tarmac. Later a slapping noise was noticed when the car was driven in 2WD. It was the tread coming away from the tyre casing and the tyres were expensive Bridgestones. The main drawback of the Land Rover is its high purchase cost and even Defenders that are over 15 years old will auction for a high price because of what the vehicle is capable of. The good points are that Land Rover parts are also made in South Africa hence a 300 TDi cylinder head can be bought for a quite reasonable non-Japanese price.

Aside from power of the vehicles, other factors need to be considered, like the quality of the tires on each and how much weight is resting on the driving wheels, as well as the position of the tow line... In this case the tow line is lower on the pickup, so the rear of the pickup (driving wheels, apparently a 2 wheel dirve)), are being lifted of the ground while the SUV is having its rear wheels being pulled to the ground, and given it is a 4 wheel drive, that is putting more weight/traction on the SUVs rear tires... I am not a truck or SUV fan, but I am scientifically inclined and although an interesting video, the testing methodology may have people drawing the wrong conclusions...

Listen, Some of you are clearly not paying attention to the video, (or you are purposely instigating an argument) 1. The Dodge IS a 4X4. Look at the tailgate at the beginning of the vid. 2. No the dodge is not engaged in 4 wheel drive. 3. No the dodge does NOT have a locking differential. 4. Yes the land rover is in 4 wheel drive. 5. When you boil the tires, you loose traction, keep your foot out of the gas. 6. Do the math. 4 tires vs. 1 tire equals no traction. 7. Simple physics. 8. Have a nice day.
