Dr. Alyssa, Thanks for your very clear presentation, separating fact from fiction. My case: Periodic, sporadic, involuntary pops and cracks from those joints plus ankles (right while I'm writing this), shoulder / arm interface. No pains - Not yet anyway. Your newsletter is terrific.

I get some clicking noises from one of my knees when doing squats and from shoulders when starting pushups, there's no pain so I don't worry about it, thinking it's the same as knuckle cracking.

When my son was a teenager I asked his paediatrician to tell him to stop cracking his knuckles. He said it's okay and won't hurt while cracking his own knuckles 😂. My son was so pleased!

Thanks Alyssa, we love the science, Scientia in Latin = Knowledge if memory serves. I signed up for the Newsletter under my real last name. Not as smooth as my commenting name. Question: Despite being a lean, fit, endurance athlete and construction worker most of my adult life, I had an eye stroke which led to a cardiac cat scan with contrast and a stent in the LAD artery. Thankfully there was no other serious blockage. In the process it was revealed I have a high calcium score of 500, which puts me at risk for heart attack and stroke, I'm sure you know. So the question is: Will that high calcium score make me prone to arthritis? Dr told me it's genetic - you can't ingest enough calcium to get that score. To you and your followers I'll say as a warning: Somewhere in my mid to late 60's, I was noticing I had to stop and rest on my 3&3 regular workout. 3 miles with 3 hills, 2 short and steep and a long slow grade up to my vehicle at the end. It was an easy favorite near my house. I was passing all heart checkups easily until that time. Dr suggested the cat scan with contrast. I waited a year to get the scan and only after the eye stroke a year later did I get it. The delay was that two PA's suggested I might have early COPD - they were in error, and I figured I could just deal with the COPD. Stent made me feel like a 20 year old again energy wise besides the wear and tear of a very active life of course. So the Warning is: Pay attention to the subtle warning signs - tell your Dr's about them - and you may be able to avoid large incidents like stroke or heart attack. Eye stroke damage to me is minimal and Stent put me back in gear for activities. Dr gives me the go ahead for all activities with caveats - don't hold breath under exertion i.e. lifting weights, free diving and snorkeling, maxing out in any heavy lifting or working out or long distance high energy activities. That's the long story - hope it's helpful - perhaps you have an opinion on the high calcium level and arthritis risk. Stay safe and well.

I have been cracking my knuckles for decades. Not as much now, I am 70. I just do not feel the need to crack them as often as I used to.

I do find that kneeling makes my knee hurt later, I do have crepitus but usually no pain normally. So is kneeling bed, esp on hard surface? (I also have multiple finger toe osteo)

I've done it for 40 years, and I don't have arthritis in my hands. I'm here for the hip and shoulder. I didn't crack those. Maybe cracking keeps arthritis from occurring. Lol
