In an interview with Crooked I Rakim was asked about the greatest rappers ever, and after naming mainly the artists who influenced him the most the first name that came into his head was Eminem. When you have one of the most influential lyrical rappers ever putting you in a pedestal you are definitely respected. The respect he gets from his peers is mosly related to his technical abilities and no so much about his persona or his lyrical content. Regarding the fans, most of them are not really into that aspect of rapping so they don't understand/care how impressive and innovative his rhyming patterns are. That's the reality.

I would argue the reason Eminem cops “hate” (read: mainly justified criticism) is because even when he hops on ‘new’ trends like on Kamikaze or MTBMB he and his fan base think he deserves acclaim for changing with the times when he’s still saying the same stuff about how he and his boys are gonna ‘take down the haters and the mumble rappers and the oFfEnDeD people’ but now it’s over modern production.
