In an interview with Crooked I Rakim was asked about the greatest rappers ever, and after naming mainly the artists who influenced him the most the first name that came into his head was Eminem. When you have one of the most influential lyrical rappers ever putting you in a pedestal you are definitely respected. The respect he gets from his peers is mosly related to his technical abilities and no so much about his persona or his lyrical content. Regarding the fans, most of them are not really into that aspect of rapping so they don't understand/care how impressive and innovative his rhyming patterns are. That's the reality.
