Raw Cat Food Chat time! Today, let’s discuss why it’s a good idea (and NECESSARY) to add supplements when making homemade raw cat food and why we include them in the raw recipe on CatLadyFitness.com (as well as anywhere else you will find a recipe for homemade raw kitty food).
I’ve touched on this in numerous videos, so a lot of this may be a broken record to you seasoned members of the CLF fam - but this question/comment is SO common I figured we should designate a video to share some reasons 😉

Yes, supplements are so important! My batches always have have added taurine, zinc, manganese, iodine, calcium (since I don't use bone), salmon oil (for EPA/DHA), and vitamin E. If I'm not using pork, I always have a B vitamin supplement too. Thanks for the video!

but you dont even know how much you would need to add to each recipe in order for it to do anything besides be excreted by the cat's body.

Yukii301 no, not, actually. The dangers of excessive ingestion of vitamins are well known and documented. Easy to overdose a cat. Your raw diet shouldn’t include anything other than muscle meat, bone, liver, eggs and sardines.

My cats get : - GNC Multi-Mega-vitamin Plus 1x per per month. - fresh organic cat grass - Reverse Osmosis Water in a 3 tier water fountain (to make it fun - It worked ! )

I I got to feed the tigers at the Monterey zoo last year and they give them whole raw chicken but soaked in a gravy of supplements in order for them to do better cuz what they have found is that store bought meat, though raw is not what cats would eat in the wild. Cuz they don’t eat packaged chickens. They eat fresh caught live game. So it’s not identical. So they add supplements so they get with their raw meat the pieces they are missing by not eating fresh caught game. Plus they are not living in the wild so that creates different nutritional needs. In fact they found that feeding the tigers once every few days because eating everyday was making them sick since that not usually what happens in the wild. So they are healthier eating only a couple days a week. It was a fascinating experience. And I try to apply it to how I care for my cat.

I have a question. I am starting to look after my mom's cat. I have falcons so I buy local full body quail. Can I pluck the feathers and grind this up and feed to the cat raw? Do you still recommend supplements? Thank you

Hi how you going Rob here from Australia I just want to ask you a couple of thing about a couple of things I’ve seen on here and read. They reckon you should add a small amount of probiotics into your raw food when serving because the good enzymes destroys any bad bacteria in the raw meets I guess I just wanted to ask you what your view on this is and the other thing is powdered egg shell shouldn’t be given to kittens as it hasn’t got the sufficient amount of the correct levels of calcium for growing pets I’d love to hear what your view is on these 2 supplements cheers.

L-Lysine helps with cats immune systems so if your cat is getting sick or has runny eyes the L-Lysine helps to give the immune system a boost and fight off what is causing those things to happen. The recommended dosages on the L-Lysine powder from the vet is 1 teaspoon a day or 1/2 teaspoon 2x a day for cats over 6 months and 1/2 teaspoon a day or 1/4 teaspoon 2x a day for cats under 6 months. I hope this helps!

I can't find some of this supplements where I am from :C what can I do? Any alternatives? I can't find Taurine at all or the Salmond oil, just fish oil 1000mg per softgel, no cholesterol, and 300mg omega 3 with epa and dha. We only have vitamin E 400 IU per softgel, I don't know if that's ok too? I just got a kitten and I want to transition him from dry food to raw, he is already eating some cooked chicken, thats what my dogs eat mostly, and he loves it. There a no cat "complete supplements" on stores, they don't even sell raw food or anything like that, the "best" thing they sell, and vets too, is Royal Canin. Btw I just found your channel, I love you, will sub right now lol

I don't buy commercial meat for my cats. I breed rabbits instead. It doesn't take that much time. Feeding and watering takes about 5 minutes a day. I can butcher 3 rabbits in an hour.

Freezing them is fine, this is what a lot of people do. I buy pre-made raw frozen patties from a local pet food company. You can buy the premix supplements here--tcfeline.com/ I do not use this brand since I do not make the raw cat food myself, but I read online a vet who highly recommends it and this particular vet said she has devoted her entire career to cats.

Dietary deficiencies are absolutely part of nature. But why would you do that to your cat if you didn't have to?? If you're going to the effort of making your own cat food why would you not make it the very best you can? Cats in the also don't live nearly as long as house cats. So, there's that.....

Currently can't afford a vitamix since I have a human baby on the way. My cat Marceline has been regurgitating her dry food (she eats too fast). I like the idea of doing the raw food instead of canned and was wondering if a traditional manual meat grinder ($30.00) could crunch up the bones instead of me using bone supplements to try this. I'd be willing to go a couple times through it with the mixture. Any responses are welcome.

hi, I see so many sites both saying opposite things concerning raw eggs for cats. ( some vet sites say its dangerous for bacteria reason ( Salmonella, e.coli ) and should be cooked first and other sites for raw cat food often add it in uncooked into their grind meat. May I ask what is your take on this supplement ?

I recently just bought a 3/4 horse power grinder. and 4 supplements ( Wild Pacific Salmon Oil, Lysine powder, taurine powder, Active B complex ) also water filter and I grow cat grass every week for them. And now I am getting prepared to make my first small batch ( to test what my cats like or dont like ) of raw cat food , I like your videos :)

Salmonella is a valid concern, so be careful where you source your eggshell. I would suggest only feeding the yolk, since the eggwhite contains a protein that prevents absorption of biotin, which cats need.

@@greencat1314 that myth has been debunked. There's more than enough biotin in eggs that negates any effects of avidin.

replace the fish oil with canned sardines in water. For taurine just make sure to feed hard working muscle meats.

HI. not easy to find Vitamin E powder ( at least not on Amazon.ca ) so since I grow my own Hydroponic Spinach and kale ( which are both a good source of vitamin A ) how much would you add into your above recipe ?
