This whole concert is Top Notch!! And this song is what us Classic Journey fans call a ...... 'Masterpiece' of performance!!! Fun Fact - This song wasn't done in the whole tour, only a very few cities got to hear 'Mother Father' perform live!! I'm so grateful that it was recorded!!

One of the greatest live performances I've ever seen. Everything about this is top tier! Neal Schon is criminally underrated as a guitarist! ! my opinion, this version is far superior to the studio version! Great reaction, guys! Hopefully, your next Journey song will be "When you love a woman." I think you'll really enjoy it.

It's amazing that Steve Perry could sing like this through an entire concert, night after night. What a gift to be able to hear a song performed like this.

Yes, it was a gift to see it performed live. I had no idea what rabbit hole I was going to be going down, about three weeks after this Houston Concert in November 1981 at the Los Angeles Western Forum when I was 15 years old. It was my best friend that wanted to go and bought the tickets. I knew the usual album rock radio hits but knew little else. I was already being blown away within the first couple of songs and falling for all of them as a band of musicians, but especially Steve Perry and his stratospheric level voice along with his cute and charismatic stage presence. Then this song. As I have described so many times over the years, I was mesmerized, and then the end with that last note of his, metaphorically, my mouth wide open, my jaw hit the floor in awe. Literally in awe. I remember that moment so clearly, and this Houston recording is so similar so I get to experience it again and again whenever I want. Literally changed my life, for the Love I had for the music and his Voice, and everything else a 15 year old girl with an ultra huge crush would have. Their music still gives me chills to this day.

Historically, Jonathan Cain always did that piano solo leading into Open Arms. It also gave Steve Perry stage time to recoup his voice and energy after performing Mother Father. He said in interviews Mother Father was the most difficult and taxing for him to perform LIVE. What a powerful and incredible LIVE done here in so many ways.

Steve Perry once said that this was the toughest Journey song to sing, yet he still kills it on this live performance. Just another amazing performance by one of the best voices of all time. You have a few of those "once in a lifetime" voices, and then there are even fewer "there will NEVER be another like them" voices, and Steve is definitely in that latter category. As far as the guitar work goes... Its funny, but when you hear conversations about the best guitar players, Neal Schon of Journey often doesn't get mentioned which is a bit of a travesty to me, as he is one of the best in my opinion. Anyway... I've been looking forward to seeing you two react to this, and I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Your reactions continue to be among the very best and I can't wait to see what's next!

On your statement here. I absolutely agree with you about Neal. I also wonder why there's not much mention when people talk about great singer/guitarist combos. Many mention Roth and Eddie, Tyler and Perry etc.. in my opinion Neal Schon and Steve Perry are one of, if not the greatest combos ever. They compliment each other so well. Neal sings as beautifully on his guitar as Steve does vocally.

It's insanely difficult: as a woman I find it pretty easy to sing along with Journey, but I wouldn't even think of trying this. Just when you think you've heard Steve do everything possible with his voice, he does something else. Plus it apparently had a lot of emotional meaning for Perry, so they didn't perform it often. We're lucky they included it in this epic concert so we can see him doing this tour de force live.

Steve Perry has said that Mother Father was the toughest song to sing. The piano solo at the end was to allow him time to recover. As for the studio version, the vocals were done in 1 take!

Sensational Steve Perry never disappoints. What an iconic band also. He is one of a very very few that sounds the same live as in the studio.Definetly he and Freddie Mercury were the greatest singers from late 70s well into the 80s.
@RustyHinge
@RustyHinge 8 ай бұрын
I disagree. What sets Steve apart is that he doesn't sound the same live as in the studio. He sounds better live. He also changed how he approached every song differently in every single show. Most performers sing their songs the exact same way live as they did on the record. Not Steve. You KNEW it was live because it was always different than the record. Perry also sang with more power live than on record. Freddie can't touch Steve, IMHO. He lacked control of pitch and vibrato. He was a great showman, though.

This concert in Houston is one of the best of journeys Steve Perry remember this is a concert, and he runs from one end of the stage to the other end of the stage back-and-forth nonstop as he is singing songs, and dance in a long, twirling whatever he’s doing because he loves to perform for his fans and you never could tell that he was running all over the place That’s when bands were awesome members could actually play instruments no computers singers didn’t have special microphones. You hear what is coming out of that mouth and that is the mouth of Steve Perry better known as “The Voice” Last year he was voted for the billboard, best rock singer of all time that is a huge award There’s been nobody like him cents he not only has a great singing voice, but he’s a good guy. He never did really speak badly about band members, but they sure do you like to throw out darts at him. Journey was not famous until Steve Perry came into that group, and he took them soaring up into the heavens 💙🎤🎶💜

The studio version of ‘mother father’ Steve did it in ONE take! And then walked out of the studio. Steve is absolutely the GOAT. Jon Bon Jovi gave him the nickname “The Voice”. At the time, there was always an argument around HS as to who had the best rock voice; Steve or Freddie Mercury. In an interview with Freddie, the reporter asked him who he thought had the greatest voice in the business. Freddie said, you should talk to Steve Perry!

Le bassiste a raconté que lors de l'enregistrement studio de cette chanson , Steve Perry est venu, a chanté et .... il n'a pas été utile de le faire une autre fois, il avait trouvé la perfection dès la première fois !

More musicality in this song that entire albums of modern music. Brings this better quality stuff back please. Or just redo everything from the golden era of 73-83 like the movie reboots.

"Mother, Father" was the B-side of "Who's Sorry Now" in the U.S., which was the first single from the "Escape" album. I bought that 45 single & eventually played the B-side, not expecting much, coz most B-sides from any artist in the 70s & 80s SUCKED. OMG -- "Mother, Father" did not suck -- I was pleasantly shocked. Back in the day (1981), most people knew "Mother, Father" from purchasing the album, because "Escape" was MEGA-HUGE. I never heard this Live version until today watching your vid -- I'll bet that you like the Live version better though it's very close & true to the recorded version.

My adopted mom's a bigot, and she never wanted me. My adopted mom is a beautiful woman, because she took something on that she didn't want to do. Me. She wanted my brother, but we were to be adopted together.. that was the condition. She took it. My own biological Cree Mother was very young when she had me, her second born. She abandoned us... her little family. I have hurt and wept over this for decades. I have spoken to her, and divorced her. I have hated her and cried for her. I don't want to keep doing this; I understand why.. or that she did it because I understand what I did to my own child. And I never wanted my damage to overlap, and it did. As it did for my own Mother, and I understand and I WILL repair and restore this ache in my heart for MOTHER. I forgive my adopted mom for her limitations. She is human; I can see that. I can love her, because that's who I am. Regardless of anything that has gone. I can forgive my real Mother; I truly understand and I hope she knows in her heart that I UNDERSTAND. Out of that fertile soil, love for my mother, both of them, all of them, can grow again.

So, when you think of Journey, you think of the voice, Steve Perry, and then the outstanding guitar work gets overlooked. Just like when listening to Van Halen. Easy to focus on the guitar work, and miss Alex's drumming, Michael's vocals and bass work.

Since you guys liked Journey. Why not also try out one their contemporary bands from the same era. I am talking about REO Speedwagon. Check them out songs like I can’t fight this Feeling and Take it on the Run are both good songs.

Deen Castronovo is one the drummers for Journey now. He sings this song pretty damn good, not as perfect as this, but pretty damn close, all while playing the drums. 😊Check it out. Video called Journey Through Time, Mother Father Sister Brother.

If you are wondering what they are saying you should always pull up the lyrics with the song, and I think you always get a deeper understanding of the song. Take Care.
