I'm glad this video exists. I hate Automata's combat so much that the entire game is ruined for me because of it. All of my attacks feel so weak, and have such little impact, that they're just not fun to use. The only weapons I actually have fun with are bare fists, but even then they still suffer from terrible damage output. And that's a dealbreaker for me. You can have the best story, world, writing, or characters ever conceived, but if your gameplay isn't fun then all of that creative writing is meaningless. EDIT: Since writing this comment, I actually gave it another shot and turns out: I was just playing it wrong! Mod chips play a huge role in making you physically stronger, and I completely missed the shop that sells them when I first played. In my defense tho, the game tutorializes both the weapon shop *and* the item shop, but doesn't say anything about mod chips. But now I appreciate this game a lot more than when I first wrote it.

i just got nier because it was on sale and the 2 very brief things i saw made it looks super nice (which it does) and the combat look really fun. i didnt look anything else up beyond number of hours of gameplay to make sure i wasnt blatantly getting ripped off. i tried to start it on hard cause i wanted to try to master the mechanics so i can feel like i am accomplishing something. after dying a few times on the intro to oneshots i just went easy to get to a first save so i dont have to sit through 40 minutes of tutorials to get to gameplay. (which i was hilariously surprised at the automatic gameplay.) i literally set my controller down for the entire first boss and won. that should have clued me in to the combat but i figured it was a just a meme type difficulty. then i got to the game and started feeling like i was missing something with the combat. every single encounter i was hitting R2, L2, and dodge and nothing else at all. now im looking things up to realize thats all it is. im dumbfounded that a game can be this watered down in its combat for a purely combat focused game. i dont care at all about the very predictable story. just an extremely odd letdown of a game. absolutely love the graphics and the soundtracks and the animations are superb. but when you can beat bosses and mobs with literally 2 buttons while eating a sandwich on hard (as long as you dont get oneshot by a no warmup move) something is obviously wrong. i am now finding out the story is why people play. well. ive skipped every bit of the unimportant and predictable story so i guess this is just going to go into my list of games i can actually play while drunk off my ass. cheers. edit: and just a good point to why dark souls gets compared to so often. combat needs a balance of reward vs punishment for getting it right vs wrong. in dark souls not only was there a bit of a penalty for dying but there was also multiple rewards for getting it right ie reposts, backstabs, drops, advancement, and unique animations. thats what so many games forget including nier. if youre going to have punishments for getting combat wrong. you need rewards for getting it right. but nier, i dont even know whats right and wrong beyond dying because of the lack of dynamics. but i dont know. thats just my first impressions as i havnt got that far i dont think.

It's concerning to me that reviewers didn't mention how underdeveloped this game's combat is. It's truly mind-numbing to play, and well below the bare minimum. It just needed a list of proper combos (e.g. like in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance) for you to learn with their own distinct animations, perhaps different for each weapon, and make basic combos effective for the opening hours and less effective over time. That's it. Platinum Games usually have combat systems with a lot of variety and depth - I was expecting it to achieve just half of that ... not 10% of it. Some people who defend this game say stuff like "Oh, you can do a well timed dodge. The game has loads of depth." lol. Why are the standards so much different for this game?

No youre right, the game has bad combat. If you ask any experienced gamer or action game lover, theyll say its trash combat. The reason why this game is well praised is because of casuals, game journalist, and apologist. The game is made for mass appeal than depth. Implementing bullet hell in an action game is a bad idea bcoz it doesbt complement combat. Its a lazy design. The game design is made to diversify than specialise to make it appealing. Changing game mode and camera angles wud make people feel cool but if u r an old gamer, its annoying. The game is more like a opera where u r playing the actor. The music hits, u dance around. Oh yeah forgot to mention how boring enemies r. Since this game is made by platinum, even if they put out a spamfest combat, the combat feel is calibrated quite well since theyre mostly an action game studio. Yes it's true the combat isn't very sophisticated at all and there is no incentives in terms of learning new abilities so it gets stale real quick. What keeps the game alive imo is the weapon combinations and the attention to detail in the execution of moves. This game is really meant to be played as an atmospheric game that appeals to certain aesthetics and it has a lot of charm in that sense. But as an action game, it's quite boring and primitive. The bullet hell is so bad I'm surprised they added it. It could have been something like Raiden X - don't think it would have been difficult to implement - and instead we get this 1st grader flash repetitive game.

I faced four glitches and yes it is the pre-patched version (because downloading patches and games on the PS4 is torture for me due to having to wait three god damn days for it to finish. Sometimes the internet runs out before I could even finish it). 1. the ladder glitch. It's because I always constantly use the dash button a lot and it caused the game to prevent me from climbing up or down ladders. The glitch occurred over 5 times when playing (I didn't count) 2. the loading area glitch. Using the dash button again a lot can cause the game to freeze and slowly load in the next area. I now avoid this annoying glitch by going slow this time (it took the life of a dear friend of mine, Mr. Moose). The glitch occurred twice, and it did interrupt my gameplay. 3. getting stuck between shit and falling at the same time glitch that won't let you land or escape. Blowing yourself up was a cool feature I found out for myself once this happened, still didn't die. Once, I almost got it twice but it only occurred once. 4. Leaving the tower before completing the final (FUCKING) hacking minigame treasure box soft lock glitch. I saved outside of the area after completing all but one treasure box minigame in one of those towers, coming back from rage and seeing there was anything left to do in the (FUCKING) game I returned to try again. i won. Ran towards the elevator, red light still visible, red cross covering the O button. i got soft locked. i have lost hope for this accursed game. The soft lock glitch occurred once and once was enough for me to quit the game permanently. I quit, Drakengard is a fuck ton better than this. Yoko Taro was a lot better when it comes to the writing and overall story, but as a game director, he's a hack. (over-exaggeration, but he seriously needs to hire better programmers, designers and testers because his games are starting to look like ass the more I look at it) I shouldn't be mad at him for doing what he loves, but he is the reason why people blame hack n' slash games and old style arcade shooting games for being repetitive and boring. (SLOW ENEMIES AND ATTACK & BULLET SPONGES ARE NOT WHAT I CALL A FUN ADDITION TO A FUCKING HACK N' SLASH GAME! Admittedly there are some good bosses and enemies but they are all attack and bullet sponges, Tetsuya Nomura made enemies and bosses in Kingdom Hearts tough as nails and forced players to strategise to win against the boss, and that game series is marketed towards children) Yoko Taro is best when he is at the pen but not when he is project director. The director of Drakengard 2 was a better director by far when it came to gameplay, something that I tested for myself when playing Drakengard 2 on a (slow as balls) PS2 emulator. As slow as Drakengard 2 is on an emulator, I still had fun with it. Nier Automata's story is beautifully written and a well told story in the game, but in terms of gameplay and performance (without patches, which is what most of his game needs to run and which in itself is why I hate how he directed this game. I tolerated the forced camera angles and slow enemies and bosses (by the way, because I always grind to get a better chance at winning every boss I come across in games, never give me the option to shoot the enemy and never give the player unlimited ammo. Limitations in combat breed strategy and more creative cheats to defeat a boss. Plus in Nier Automata, I had to face Eve for the last time and was playing as 2B, I couldn't get near him to attack him so I proceeded to shoot him to death. Which is pretty boring compared to bosses in Devil May Cry and Kingdom Hearts. If there is any comparison to how this game plays, it is the fact that it is a better version of Devil May Cry 2 but with a slight improvement to the gameplay, Oscar winning story (if the judges admit to it) and having to press a button to lock-on to enemies. Besides those points, the gameplay is almost comparably like Devil May Cry 2. Nier Automata is worth it for the story, the gameplay is sadly a part of the experience. Plus I am sick of having to play as a spaceship from Asteroids in Nier Automata with its horrible flight and hacking segments. I played Astro Boy: Omega Factor and various Atari games, and I have never had trouble playing those games. Atari games required you to move with the big stick you can grab with your bare hand and Astro Boy: Omega Factor had to require (even with using an emulator) directional buttons, and directional buttons in a flight segment are a god send to me because it is a lot more accurate than using the (GOD DAMN) slippery and less accurate left stick. Plus could it hurt Yoko Taro to actually get a proper QA team that actually looks into the problems of the game and also have a team that fixes bugs and glitches so that we can actually play your (GOD DAMN) game? It would? Maybe he is a lot more suited to being a writer than being a proper game director, or he needs to learn how to get his team to actually do their job properly instead of allowing his staff to half-ass their efforts and letting them fix the game when it releases. It should have been less buggy and a lot more stable than what I just witnessed when playing it. I played a bit of Hellboy: The Science of Evil and that game was a lot more stable considering the game is buggy to hell. You can avoid the glitches once you know about them, but in Nier Automata you have to reset, or worse you accidentally saved your game as it soft locks. Meaning I have to start all over again. Thank you Yoko Taro, for forcing me to watch and download a walkthrough of your game since it is majorly buggy and barely tolerable. I will excuse the fact that he is not a very rich man and that he had to deal with directing a project that was almost doomed to fail, but if you want people to stop criticizing your game for having repetitive and really boring gameplay, fight your superiors and tell them that their profits will be at stake if they allow such trash to be sold to the public and tell them that it will be delayed. Fans will have to deal with it because fuck glitches and soft locking, I was excited when hearing that FFVII: R was delayed, because that meant it was going to be fixed and have its staff make it stable enough for release. Please don't make the same mistakes with your Nier remaster, otherwise you were as good as gone and that no one will miss you as game director. Plus the game studio you chose better be suitable for remastering Nier, it better.

Just finished the first ending on PC . To be honest I did not enjoy this game . The combat is dull , shallow and repetitive You can literally just hold down the machine gun fire and run around in circles and you will defeat 99 per cent of opponents in this no problems . RPG aspect of the game is not great or intuitive. The characters are weird, 2B looks like a stripper , and 9B looks like a gender bender in junior school uniform . Adam and Eve are not intimidating and both look gay , would have been a lot better to have instead fought Alien creatures or something like that . Dialogue is absolutely cringe, nothing special or memorable about the story . I cannot bring myself to play this a second time for alternative endings because the gameplay is so weak , the other stuff I could forgive but gameplay is by far the most important thing that makes coming back for more .

The combat makes me think a bit of Dynasty Warriors, has a bit of similar hack and slash feeling to it. I wouldn't say it's very deep or profound a combat. It's slightly amusing grindy fun, I guess. It feels a bit quick-paced and action-y yet is also simplistic, and I assume this is probably a design choice; in style it is quite the opposite of Dark Souls. I haven't played it myself though, just watched me sister play it, but it's the impression that it gave.
@CuriousKey7 жыл бұрын
That's very true. Dynasty Warriors is probably closer to it in execution. The reason I make that comparison is the particular way that people praise the combat, where while it's functional as you say, it's certainly not ground-breaking, and were I to critique the combat mechanics of Dynasty Warriors I'd probably arrive at similar points. :) Funnily enough though, when I've watched people play DW games, there seemed to more variety to the combat, to be fair to those games. The combat here would be ok if it mixed things up a bit more, it's just that every fight feels the same.

yes you have a lot of fair point, but can't the 'repetitive argument be made about every game? for example every single call of duty game and most other fps games. you're just shooting the same enemies in the same way over and over again. actually this game would be even less repetitive than that. also i don't think you adressed it very much but the game does have a lot of different enemy types and all of the bosses e good gameplay wise in my opinion especially the humanoid ones. though I can understand that a can get tired of the regular enemies. I had the same thing around the end of route b because I didn't really use the hacking mechanic all that much and just used the sword anyway. but if you actively try to change the weapons you play with, change you chip setup to do a different playstyle then I do believe that the gameplay will easily suffice in my opinion, though I understand not wanting to do that and just stick with the standard weapons because they are better. I don't think the gameplay mechanic is inherintly bad but it really depends of who's playing it and if they like hack and slash for how long they play it and for what build they are going etc.

KH3 also introduced keyblade switching in trailers but that's never needed since the game is constantly granting you overpowered situation commands. *it’s very Satisfying and fun to mess around* You can say that for any game if you find a way to abuse it. Hell, you can even say that for Nier Automata. *You on the other hand made the combat boring you CHOOSE to make it boring.* You're basically admitting that FFXV combat is boring since this is the way the combat was designed to be lol. And I've experimented with the combat in attempt to make it more interesting but it doesn't work. The game makes Noctis way too OP. So even though it looks flashy, it's still pretty brainless combat since there's no real risk to just mashing away on your controller and pulling off crazy stunts like the ones shown in your videos. You're able to warpstrike and airstep way too many times before you run out of mp and it's never a problem if you run out of mp or hp so there's never a challenge. Would be less of an issue if the health, magic and item system were similar to how it was in KH. *I literally gotten a 600+ hit combo just switching and using the ATB* 600+ hits and the enemy didn't do shit the entire time? This is exactly what I'm talking about. Noctis is too OP in this game which removes all challenges.

This looks pretty cool actually. Looks like a mixture of warframe and asteroids :D

It's very cool aesthetically :) I love the design of the robots, and the sound design is pretty good too. I'd recommend it for the narrative, so long as somewhat repetitive gameplay doesn't bother you of course.

I'm used to warframe and devil may cry, so i'm used to somewhat repetitive gameplay. But it's a little too expensive for me atm, for that was it offers, imo. Once it drops its price i'll definitely consider buying it

I do agree that the combat system are a bit boring, and not that unique. But if a player is smart enough to utilize every move like a player that named himself Donguri990, which he always be able to utilize every movement and combo uniquely, it does seem that we have to learn just to be able to understand the full potential of combination moveset instead just mash/spam the same button over and over.

I watch donguri990’s dlc arena videos and man he makes the combat look so cool

yeah but the problem is, the shit donguri pull is end game stuff, but before end game you already bored with the gameplay. This is the reason why RPG and hack and slash dont mix

Also I wouldn't compare Nier:Automata to Dark Souls since they're completely different games. Nier is more of a Hack and Slash, something like the Devil May Cry games would be a better conparison.

You compare the combat to dark souls rather than a character action game. Character action games are visual spectacles overall, but rely on the gameplay being defensive and offensive. This one in particular is paying attention while attacking. Your idea is more slow paced. Sequelitis of ocarina of time is closer to your combat speed, but in that video it also shows the lacking elements as well that makes dark souls combat lacking. That being the mostly waiting for a best time to attack. Some want it fast, some want a puzzle. You can't really do both without being kingdom hearts or dmd. Your comparison is ultimately a wrong comparison. Overall, it's an rpg with combat elements rather than an action rpg. The niche is very thin. Ps How is dark souls not attack dodge attack? Really tho?

From this video and another, the divide in combat systems seems to be, being forced to use certain item to enforce variety and not just dodge and press attack vs i have the freedom to string any move I want which incentivises dodge attack combos with little experimentation. Aka Use tool to procede vs free to play boring. I played nj3re and enjoyed it for the most part, but intentionally made it boring by only using the main sword throughout. Seems optimum gameplay is to allow multiple options with every weapon, but hopefully each weapon is just better at certain things. I wish this video was more valid, but you didn't criticise what I wanted information on. Just a bunch of, game is boring cause it's boring(lack of enemy variety and spounges[which is the point narratively]). I've seen depth of this game, but was looking for something more intimite than first impressiony, though you said you've explored. I think the need to keep the game much like the first is what hurt it(the first game's bad feeling combat was actually intentional, so this may have been the same, but in a different way[war is a constant drool of emotions with no real satisfaction] kind of way).

furyberserk bad combat being intentional doesn't make it better
@furyberserk4 жыл бұрын
@@Andrews13channel It's not to make it better. It's intentionally to make you dislike it. This explains the sponge exceedingly. They even say in game killing is equal to sex, so much so it kind of ruins the narrative interpretations.
@lucaswibisono13164 жыл бұрын
@@furyberserk Did they really say that killing is equal to sex? When was this happened? Because if its does, it sounds so weird. Its like one of those "People will die if they killed' moment. I mean it is true, but what?
@furyberserk4 жыл бұрын
@@lucaswibisono1316 It was a jackass mission. It may mean feeling of killing is like them having sex, but then there are the 2b vs 9s ideas that confuses it as well.
