The Game Awards could be compared to the Oscars, especially the Academy Award Best Animated Feature. The judges probably don’t play any of these games, they just give the award to who campaigns the hardest, just like how they don’t watch any of the animated films nominated at the Oscars.

Awards for almost anything artistic are gonna end up as super subjective, but having Balatro (a very fun and replayable roguelike) against EXTREMELY high budget games feels weird even conceptually. Like, sure, objectively, there's less TO Balatro, and sure some people might have more fun with it than a AAA game, but if I haven't even heard of *checks notes* Black Myth: Wukong, it's not like I can really say Balatro is more or less fun than it for me personally, much less something nebulous like the "best game". Like you say, the medium is so huge that you really need categories for anything to matter even a bit.

I generally see the "GOTY" award as "most impactful" rather than "better" or "more fun". In which case, I'd say the nominations make a lot of sense. Balatro was absolutely massive in the rougelike community, and held its audience captive for months. This was very similar to Wukong, despite the difference in budget. We can also see this massive impact with SotE (setting aside the semantics of Game vs. DLC). While fun is subjective, impact can be seen and felt (and later on, quantified.) TLDR: It's more of a ranking of impact and/or influence over more subjective stuff like fun.

I do care about the game awards cause I think they’re simply fun. I don’t think they should be taken as seriously as they are, because obviously both the jury system and fan voting are… garbage. Simply put. Vote for the games out of the ones chosen that you like, and then just enjoy the show, get excited about the announcements, and try to have fun like I do. Or… just don’t watch them.

The Game Awards is something you put in the background while you do something else and just pay attention to world premieres, the orchestra, or anything else that interests you. That's the best way to enjoy it in my opinion. Games that win or are nominated are no indication of being objectively better, it's just a bunch of people deciding on which they like best, sometimes without even playing them.

Honestly, Elden Ring being nominated to GOTY isn't a big deal unless you actually took the game awards very seriously. Shadow of the Erdtree doesn't have chances of winning game of the year, the game outlests are kinda biased against sequels(Red dead Redemption 2 and Zelda ToTk), they seem to favor more "original" games instead. So no way they are voting for a DLC. Nominating a dlc to Game of the year was nothing but a publicity stunt to have people watching the event.

I really do agree with this. Gaming has gotten too big for us to complain about what deserves to be a nominee. Most of the games like Crypt Custodian, Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus, Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and others either didn't get a nomination or only has one. So, this year, I'm just going in saying, "Don"t care about the awards. Lemme see the ads and the Game Awards Orchestra cause those are the best parts of the Game Awards." Also, side note: I kinda do hope either Astro Bot or Balatro wins Game of the Year cause it would be cool to see.

I was thinking the same thing while I was casting a vote "I don't think that watching small snippet of an actor's performance in a game should be my main deciding factor" or "I should really listen to the whole album instead of skimming past it and just judging the whole OST by the main theme" I feel like giving every single game that released that year a score and giving the awards *mainly* based on that would be fairer since games like Persona 3 Reload, Mullet Madjack and Helldivers 2 despite being amazingly fun games don't even have a chance to be goty just because they weren't nominated. And this also takes down the burden of the players having to find their favourite out of 5 games they haven't played because they can just give their scores based on those they KNOW they have experienced to the fullest and know for sure that they won't be doing a mistake.

Its ironic that CaseOh even as an nominee in the game awards content creator of the year, really doesn't care as well. He is mad that people on Twitter saying "who" to him and the others nominees including Pekora. Like Caseoh doesn't want it to be a war and he explains that after the awards, everyone will forget about it except the people who had the trophies. Then Caseoh said he as long as he goes live, see his audiences coming in, and a great time, he feels already accomplished. Really, people should not take TGA seriously, especially after 2023 where the AWARD WINNERS were told to "Wrap it up" as they were doing their speech. Can't really say much about Elden Ring in general, but I don't want the to have DLCs in the running for GOTY. Because even if it's massive or improves any game, the DLC itself shouldn't be considered as a separate game. Literally Doom Eternal HAS DLC THAT CAN BE PLAYED ON ITS OWN! It has two parts that can be played both separately and with the base game. I did that when I got DLC for the first time on Xbox and still didn't have the base game since I bought it back on PS4. DLC for Elden Ring REQUIRES you to have the base game that was created back in 2022 to play! It is in fact extra content made for the original game, not content that can be experienced on its own! If anything they should have made a new categorie for best DLC that can bring attention to the content that brings out the best out of a game and possibly expands upon it!

Game awards is the biggest game award related show, that people care the most about. games are indeed too fragmented to have good game awards anymore. The news outlets are acting as if there is a gaming monoculture, but the only monoculture left is just talking about how terrible AAA games are. The new actually good gaming culture is several pockets of people playing specific indie games they like, and tastes are all over the place. You know... like all the random games that were on the Game Boy Advance. There wasn't one that stood out that much, they all just had their own flavor of good. Also, yea, Nine Sols not being included sounds sad, but I don't consider that game award winning for overall quality. It's more decent on narrative by how well it used its short time to build up characters.
