It was really great to hear Chang Edmund say that he first thought that the Aikido uke fell willingly, but then he realized that they are really being thrown! They are just going with it to avoid injury. I also loved Shirakawa Sensei say that when someone is 4 times as heavy as you, it is not efficient to use Koshinage. We got to see that Shihonage and Tenchinage work very well, even with such a difference in weight. Thank you for another amazing collaboration!

“They are going with it” to allow the technique to work. You have to hold on, attack predictably with telegram. You have to react to the throw as expected. Just like you can block, dodge and parry a strike you can defeat these attacks by not going along, by pulling the strike back or following through with another. You can move your body!! The principles are good but no different than reality..

A lot of people (myself included when I was a kid) used to see a lot of Aikido and Jujutsu throws and think they look so fake and theatrical like the people are literally throwing themselves and it must just be nonsense. Then I realized half the time they are throwing themselves or letting themselves be thrown and it's to avoid the pain of a lock or being thrown in a way that would be even more uncomfortable and debilitating than the way they're currently being thrown. Locks are very uncomfortable to say the least.

Why doesn’t the aikido guy compete in Sumo then? Wouldn’t he win the competition?
@kamikaze00007
@kamikaze00007 Жыл бұрын
For people who can't understand due to the somewhat lacking explanation via caption. The majority of the techniques rely on disrupting the grappler's balance by pushing their upper body's center of gravity towards a certain direction which is most often in an angle or towards where the spine and legs cannot handle the sudden shift in weight distribution. This is meant to be done fast as a reflex move (bad example, but imagine Steven Seagal in his movies. That kind of speed.) The natural counter to this would be to move your legs and feet and regain balance before you are thrown. However, the arm and hand movements take in consideration being grappled, and includes moves that serve to use the human joints' limitations and structure to get the upperhand and be able to destroy the opponent's balance via forcing certain movements. An example is when he threw the sumo guy by first pushing his grabbing arm towards his own shoulder's direction. Because sumo guy is intent on grabbing his arms strongly, the sumo guy's elbow bends into a position where he is forced to bend his upperbody backwards to make space, but failure to step backwards results in toppling over.

Sounds reasonable...with this line of thought there is no need for weight classes in MMA competition.
@kamikaze00007
@kamikaze00007 Жыл бұрын
@@The_Savage_Wombat Not really. The need for weight classes in combat sports in general is due to fight-applied science with regards to force and mass. Muscle and bone mass in this case. More mass means more force can be created by the exact same physical attack. Technique in grappling may work around weight difference in getting the upper hand and being able to throw down the opponent. But that doesn't mean you can end the fight easier. That's why there's a countdown rule for grappling if I recall correctly. If there was too great a weight discrepancy the fight would no longer be fair, and thus cannot be "sport". The more muscularly large and powerful opponent could use that mass to overturn the grapple in a quick moment and then all that technique would be for nothing at that moment. Sports are called sports because they have standards or rules to allow for a balanced fair fight/play. Not having that is what makes one an "underground fighting tournament".

@@The_Savage_Wombat : weight classes actually helps make the sport be more accessible to most people. Without weight classes, only absolute true monsters will participate. That's cool and all but it's all theory that when applied in an actual scenario where the opponent is resisting it never works The only time any of these moves were ever even attempted to be resisted was at the end point. But what is forgotten is that person has more control over there arm than you as an aikidoka does.yet he never pulled his arm or resisted the arm movements themselves. You can't control an opponents arm from far away. It's literally not possible. Even if they're smaller than you. I'm gonna assume you train in aikido. If so my question to you is this, if aikido works where are there no videos of it being used in live self defense situations or even live sparring. Aikido was more popular than bjj for a time so it's not because there's not very many people who practice it. The answer is obvious. Every martial art that IS effective you can find videos of it being successfully used in self defense, boxing, kick boxing, jiu jitsu, muy Thai wrestling. Even ones that have glaring issues but moves that are effective like karate. You can find them being successfully used for actual self defense. But aikido, nothing, jkd, nothing. Aikido is pretty but that's about it. I highly recommend watching martial arts journey if you haven't. He's a former master aikidoka who quit after actually trying to put theory into practice with aikido

In Aikido it takes a lot longer to become effective in a fight than anything else you learn in Judo, Karate, Jujutsu etc. This repells those that seek a quick way to inflict damage upon an enemy. Aikido seeks peace between the people, many other martial arts seek victory over an opponent.

Not Japanese, but I learned Aikido both in my country and during few months when I was in Japan. The thing about Aikido is that it is not meant for fighting, but if learned properly and if the person practiced for a really long time, I wouldn't wanna mess with them. Most of what people see is demonstration between a tori and uke and of course, they're trained to work together in the execution of techniques, so they both know how to follow through and how to fall without being hurt, so it looks fake. However, I personally would recommend combining Aikido with some other martial art like Karate to also build the strength of your punches and kicks because with punchs and kicks (especially fast ones), Aikido is much less effective.

He isn't taking much damage because he's doing good Ukemi. Ukemi, if you didn't know what it is, is a way to break your fall by hitting/slapping the ground with your hand before your body falls and hits the ground. Doing this will disperse all of the energy/momentum your body has in the air, while falling towards the ground, into the ground itself. Then it'll feel just like falling towards the ground from only an inch or two above the ground. A bunch of martial arts use this in order to stay safe while practicing with a partner :D

Yes I felt its power as I flew through the air ; two fingers caused a choke , a second strike winded /emptied my lungs and a simple trip ment I landed bouncing on my face half doubled over in pain and unable to break my fall in any way. I landed like a pizza upside down ! Teacher was 63 🤔 just realised that was 47yrs ago. Your lessons were not wasted 🙏.

With a judo black belt you can apply pressure for a while and againts a great muay thai fighter you can block a few strikes but aikidoka is like fighting a ghost. You just get sucked into some torrent and there is nothing to push againts and nothing to pull. I trained aikido over 10 years ago and got yellow belt, but I can still pull off a rokkyo on my knees in judo ne waza againts green belts and took down a mma fighter with wrestling backround using ikkyo. I train judo and karate, but aikido will have a special place in my heart and I would love to learn it for good sometime. You have to know mainstream fighting first like ueshiba to get it right

If you are skeptical about aikido, just read this comment. I am a former Aikido student. Didn't reach far, but i have experienced many of these techniques. You can't resist to this technique because of few things: 1. It uses your own strength against you. How? Imagine this: you are being asked to push a wall made of plastic, as hard as you can. When you're just about to hit the wall with all the force you have, the wall disappears. What's left is your huge striking power against nothing, which will cause you to trip down and fall to the ground although nothing has touched you, basically. Same technique here - with just the right timing, no force is needed to throw even the biggest guy in the room to the ground. 2. In static situations, the first thing the defender does is to lock one part of the attacker's body. Could be the wrist, the arm, the shoulder, whatever. At this point, the attacker has 2 optipns: do what the defender leads him to do, or break that bpdy part in an instant. Obviously the instinct will be to do what the attacker leads him to do. 3. All those flips you see the attackers doing are just a result of the 2nd point i made. They cannot move their locked body part so in order to not break anything they have to match the rest of their bodies with the body part that is twisted, which means to twist their entire body in order to not break their arms. Now, to tell you if this would work at a street fight? I honestly don't know. What i do know is that it needs to work only one time throighout the entire fight and the fight is over instantly due to a broken body part of the attacker.

Its so amazing to watch.3 master of their own craft openly discuss and experience aikido technique, there is still lack of understanding towards aikido technique and its meaning, which cant be explain without personally experiencing it. Aikido is great set of tools to all in any martial art u are practicing, it helps u grasp more understanding of the dynamic of energic and force changes.

Love the video! But be aware when throwing a larger person over your hips, it can be broken without warning, it will just snap. Two friend where wrestling about same size, one tried to throw the other over his hips and broke his left hip (the cartilage sphere part). Have a good one!

I have always been curious of arts that use throwing techniques although that is not an accurate description of these arts as there are many factors that are involved i.e. body positioning, angles of force etc. I am intrigued and impressed . I am a student of jooklum gee tong long pai southern praying mantis and my art seeks to borrow the opponents force to use against them. Anyways a wonderful demonstration As I am most impressed with all involved and the humility and respect 🙏 for each other and respective systems. A beautiful demonstration and representation of your art Sensi, thank you.

@@pablohancwhy do people never get that they’re training one specific thing? Working on a particular principal? Of course this isn’t a fight. Do you claim jumping rope or shadow boxing is pointless too because it’s not ‘a real fight’ naaah it’s all building blocks that make up part of the training. Really really simple to comprehend but apparently critical thinking is a dying art.
