My grandchildren in college took this to heart and shut down their party house, put new locks on the doors, etc. Terrifying reality for too many of us. 😭 I guess we lost the lottery when my goddaughter and her husband were murdered outside Spartanburg, SC. Meagan Coxie and her husband JJ. By a serial killer in 2016. Found the bodies a year later.

And just to add…hopefully as time passes, they won’t get complacent. It’s so easy to do! They won’t always have to be on “high alert”, but it will always be important that they be aware of their surroundings, and the unfortunate fact that evil walks among us. And that evil rarely LOOKS like evil.

Hey Dr. Grande, just to provide a counterpoint to your speculation: I lived at a “party house” for a couple years when I was in college. My roommates repeatedly left a back door unlocked so that friends could come in any time, grab drinks, and hang out. It didn’t matter that I argued why this was a bad idea; they did it anyway. So I put a deadbolt on my bedroom door and locked my door every night when I went to bed. It’s very possible the killer went from room to room and found a couple bedrooms locked- and rather than risk a call to 911 as he was breaking down the door, chose to let it go and went into unlocked rooms as targets of opportunity.

Dr. Grande your videos are always amazing. It is so sad to reflect on the ted incident and think about how one roommate had survivors guilt over this. The saddest part is we see people on social media saying “the surviving roommates should’ve heard this!” “I think they’re guilty” and it makes me think of how cruel those statements can be! Especially as the police have announced they are not people of interest. Thanks for the insightful video.

This is one of the few times I'm appreciative of the MSM - by not revealing many details, they can often catch the killer easier. The reason is that in any murder, there's a whole lot of ways to make mistakes and betray your identity, through evidence you've never even thought of and possibly didn't even know existed. I've noticed that American True Crime shows are a lot more forthcoming with these kinds of details than ones in the UK and former British Colonies. There's almost no doubt that there's evidence on the killer right now that he or she isn't aware of, which could legally tie him to the crime and get a conviction. Too much discussion about it in the media leads to the killer destroying that evidence. Incidentally, I graduated at the age of 20 (had just turned that age the month before the ceremony). I noticed that there's a higher degree of autonomy given you at that age as compared with the last few years of your teens. Parents are less likely to give advice and the 20-year-olds are still not thinking like an adult. It's a window for things to happen like this. If they were 27 they'd have better security and if they were 18 there'd be more eyes watching over them. Looking back it was the most dangerous part of my life in terms of things that could happen. There was a couple of close shaves also.

The detail of the second floor being level with the ground was good to hear. I kept wondering what kind of killer would risk detection by entering on the bottom floor and going up to the second. In apartment buildings, break-ins tend to happen on lower floors because it’s easier to escape the scene. So they entered at ground level. Another thing: if they’d been stabbed multiple times, why would the 911 caller say that the person they found was unconscious? They didn’t see any blood or wounds? If you’re trying to wake someone up who is in bed, you wouldn’t whip off the covers to shake them? Once the covers come off, you’d see the blood. That detail is making me nuts.

All the floors had entrances and easy access to the entrances. Killer could have specifically been stalking the upper level, spying on the two blond victims through the windows that faced the woods (either for some time or just that night) and entered the top floor through unlocked sliding door to that unit or entered unlocked sliding door on floor below. Ethan's body was presumably found outside the bathroom on the second floor outside the room he was sleeping in with his girlfriend Xana. If true, it suggests that the killer encountered him by accident and killed him and then fought and killed Xana (she had the defensive wounds presumably) before leaving through the sliding door. In other words, although rumor and leaks at this point as to these details, there may be crime scene evidence that reveals that one or both roommates on the top floor were targeted and Ethan and Xana were at the wrong place at the wrong time. The targeted theory is what the police stated initially, without details, to calm the public. Although most people are speculating that the police have nothing and are bumbling the case, I think it is much more likely that they have everything and a definitive suspect under surveillance since week one. Taking their time to process the crime scene evidence and not letting the suspect know they have him IDed is clever strategy and letting him lay down a trail of coverup in the last couple of weeks will help the case. Unless it is a very clever and cunning murderer who has been planning for some time, there will be an obvious digital and physical trail of evidence that even an inexperienced police department can follow easily.

Did you hear about the dog that was literally filleted alive 3 miles down the road 2 weeks before this happened? An older couple adopted a rescue miniature Australian shepherd who was 12, and spent 7 years of his poor life in a puppy mill before being rescued and adopted by this older couple. They let him out to pee on their very remote 10 acre property at night and later found he had been skinned alive, his entire pelt was removed and gone leaving only the fur on his face and paws. 2 weeks prior to the the same couple found a mutilated rabbit near their home, and it was mutilated in a similar fashion and I know this sounds gruesome but the owner of the home and dog said “it was cut open and you could see it’s brain. This was not done by some animal, this was deliberate.”. I absolutely believe these two events are linked.

It sounded like it was before the murderer arrived from what he says, like they were trying to pester their recluse friend into coming out to hang out with them, and they took turns calling hoping he would answer for one or the other. It’s so easy for me to imagine times I’ve done this with friends or had friends do this to me that it’s easy for me to imagine, and drives home how completely normal and fun things were going before someone came in and ended their lives. However I’m speculating as we all are at this point. It’s human nature to need answers at a time like this, but I don’t want any of our unfounded theories to affect the families or thwart justice later. I know mine is just me identifying with the victims, which is shockingly easy to do. ❤

@@misterdinkly disagree.... to go into a house that big would be at least 3 bedrooms... random? Then they would have to consider going into a house of 3 young men... that wouldn't be an easy match up if they were all awake ... the dude knew who was there to some extent and knew the house to some extent... the timing... OK...late at night must be alsep right! Right!? Well.... then they would have had some knowledge or were watching the house ...somebody was talking about a other person axtually there with the victims... in the house.. talking with them. And then everyone went to bed... and then said dude just went all out in the people that knew he was there... the other two downstairs were none the wiser... and so it wasn't a bother for him to go downstairs.... I dont know what to believe...but whoever it was had some knowledge of the house, who was inside, and what they were going to do.... it takes planning to do that and then just carry on going.... I'm guess he was injured during the 2 on 1 with the bloke and the girl.... then left as he may have been hurt.... I've also heard that the two girls downstairs did in fact hear something and (maybe even went to the same room together) and locked the door after hearing rummaging outside.... so.... its weird alright... but I don't think it was random...

I think the killer entered when the house was completely empty. I think Xana and Ethan got home first and were already dead, behind a locked bedroom door, when Dylan and Jordyn returned at 1am. That is why they didn't hear the attack. The killer then waited for more than an hour, likely on the third floor, for Madison and Kaylee to come home. That is why police believe one of them is the target. Xana's dad said they heard from her at midnight, and that she and Ethan were just hanging out at home. Police are being intentionally vague about Xana's and Ethan's movements after the frat party. I'm not convinced that Kaylee and Madison placed those calls to the ex-boyfriend.

Happy Monday, Dr. Grande! More information came out about the murders in Moscow. The two surviving roommates were actually present in the house during the course of the murders, although sleeping in the basement while they occurred. Moreover, when they walk up, they thought one of the deceased roommates was "passed out" and couldn't be revived, which suggests that whoever killed the four covered up the bodies so that these two couldn't see that they had been stabbed. They also called other friends to come over and "help" before they called 911. This explains why the police found the door unlocked, because a number of other people had been there before they came, thanks to the surviving roommates. You yourself described their dwelling as a "party house," meaning it was always full of people coming and going and the FBI believes that the killer was "comfortable" with the layout, while the sister of one of the murdered girls stated on camera that the victim's boyfriend had been totally exonerated. I concur with your analysis that the killer was looking for someone specific and killing anyone else he found there, and this incident will whet his appetite for further bloodshed. And yes, it does resemble Bundy's Chi Omega murders in that the victims were asleep or going to sleep, unlike Richard Speck's murders of the eight student nurses some fifty years ago. As for the sex of the murderer, while it is a good presumption that it was a man, one shouldn't rule out a jealous female either. More information will undoubtedly be coming forth, especially since the FBI is working on the case.

It is pretty impossible to murder 4 poeple in a house with 6 people with a knife and not alarm the others, death by stabbing is long and extremely painfull and takes multiple stabs, the victims must scream alot before death, how can you kill 4 people one by one like this in a house of 6 and not alarm the others....it seems extremely strange...not to mention that after almost 3 weeks police have no suspect.... P.S. - in the house there was also a dog that belonged to one of the victims (the one who called her ex multiple times at 3 AM, the dog was found unharmed, maybe he knew the attacker if he didnt bark...

Thank you Dr. Grande for giving a profile and sharing your thoughts 🙏 I live in the Moscow area and I can confirm most of us are on edge. A lot of the students have left so it’s pretty empty here. If these crimes were planned, he picked the right time to do it. Because it normally does get somewhat empty around the holidays. So it wouldn’t look suspicious if he had left the state after his crimes. He would be smart to do that because the town is hot right now. Police are everywhere. I can’t believe this happened…our town has always been known for being a safe place. I hope they find him. Quick.

Apart from the obvious of this being incredibly heartbreaking, tragic, and devastating, it’s also so disturbing, sickening & chilling. When I started reading about this crime the first thing that came to my mind was Ted Bundy & the Chi Omega sorority house murders, there are so many similarities. It also reminds me of the “Gainesville Ripper” murders at FSU back in 1990 😓. This being said…Dr. Grande, do you think that this could possibly be the “start” of a serial killer? I’m sure some of the residents of Moscow are wondering the same thing 😰. Praying for all of the family and friends affected by this horrific tragedy 🙏🏼🙏🏼

No. This is not "baby serial killer" behavior. Serial killers have a history of Macdonald Triad, often have a history of being a peeping Tom, and murdering individuals one at a time before taking on several victims at once. While I am not involved in this case and have not reviewed any information or pictures from the crime scene, I can say that in all of my forensic psychology education and 35 years of studying psychopathology, I have not come across a serial killer that began their "career" killing multiple people within minutes of each other.

Has anyone else heard about the story about the dog that was found skinned, gutted and killed? Apparently happened 3 weeks prior to these murders, just a few miles away from Idaho University. I've seen the story and pics of dog/owners in several media outlets like Daily Mail and NY Post- not necessarily mainstream news. So I am not sure how reliable this story is. But it gives me shivers. FYI, the pics of the dog I'm referencing are when s/he was alive; no gruesome pics or anything.

I largely agree with your analysis, I was also considering some similarities with Bundy and others just yesterday. I will disagree with one point, that being most don't murder due to consequences. I believe that most of us don't murder due to many factors, and that those who do have no concern for consequences. Your assessment that the killer/s had no expectation of escaping is solid, the time spent and number of residents made his escape very unlikely. More murders go unsolved than any of us care to admit.

I haven’t been this horrified of a crime since the Shannan Watts case. What’s so surprising is that Ethan was murdered. These women killers are usually too afraid to kill men. I’m still baffled that the surviving roommates didn’t try and check on all the victims and called a friend over immediately instead of going to their rooms. This whole case is crazy. I think the fact both girls called the ex shows they might of been scared that night and wanted Jack to come over so they felt safer but he never answered. The amount of guilt he feels is probably enough to traumatize him for life. Prayers for all of them.

I think they confirmed that Kaylee and Maddie were sleeping in the same bedroom that night. As for the lack of screaming or making any noise it's worth remembering that they were a little bit intoxicated and sleeping at that time so you would think they will be in state of shock by being brutally attacked like that. I'm not even sure some of them realised what is happening before passing away.

I remember hearing on one of those crime TV shows years ago (I think Criminal Minds) that some people get sexual gratification out of stabbing because it symbolizes penetration… So even if these poor girls were not actually sexually assaulted, their murderer very well could have gotten the same type of sexual gratification from stabbing them. That’s just absolutely horrifying to think about. 😫 And if this person is not caught, he will escalate. He’ll do it again but maybe next time he will sexually assault the person first. It’s just so awful!

@Jilli8310 Жыл бұрын
Agreed! This was more than likely a sexually motivated crime like Dr. Grande explained. Just because there were no signs of sexual assault, it does not mean that was not the intention or that he did not try. I don't think he planned to find Ethan there, as he was only spending the night with his girlfriend. I think when he encountered the male in the home, that interfered with his fantasy. Just think about it. This is a home of 5 females. The two other roommates were darn lucky their rooms were on the bottom level sectioned off from the others. If their rooms were up on the 2nd and 3rd levels, they would not have been so lucky. Either one girl or multiple girls were the targets. I think this person knew only females lived there. They brought the murder weapon with them. This was a planned, targeted attack. I don't think it was a crime of passion or personal. The mayor and ME should not have made such comments, as they don't know, there is no way to tell this early in the investigation, especially if you are without a suspect and are not an investigator with key details. This was a sex crime and this perpetrator will commit another crime if not caught. Edit: spelling I also wanted to add that some people do not understand what "targeted" means in terms of an investigation. It does not necessarily mean the victims personally knew their killer. It doesn't even have to mean that the killer personally knew and interacted with the victims prior to the night of the murders. It could mean that the killer knew of them or watched them peripherally. It could mean that the house itself was the target for some reason. Targeted killing does not always equate to personal or passion. This is how people are coming up with rumors and fantastical speculations. I have been following the case due to my own background in Criminal Law and I am shocked at how the media and armchair detectives with zero experience are trying to push certain narratives while simultaneously criticizing LE. If you have zero criminal profiling experience or education, why on God's green earth are you doing a profile of a killer? Not to mention a crime scene you have not seen? Get real people! Asinine!🤣 Rant over.

Considering that there was basically an “open-door” policy with this party house, I would wager the killer was likely already inside the house while everyone was gone. It explains no forced entry, someone was lying in wait on the third floor, they knew the layout of the house and where each room was, that’s why the killings were so efficient. I’d also wager it’s someone they knew.
