ABOUT CLINTON RUBIN
-----------------------------------------
Clinton T. Rubin, Ph.D., is a SUNY Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering, and Director of the Center for Biotechnology at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, New York. Rubin’s research is targeted towards understanding the cellular mechanisms responsible for the growth, healing, and homeostasis of bone, and how mechanical stimuli mediate these responses through the control of mesenchymal and hematopoietic stem cell differentiation and proliferation, to establish non-drug treatment strategies for osteoporosis, obesity and diabetes.
Dr. Rubin holds ~30 patents in the area of wound repair, stem cell regulation, and treatment of metabolic disease, and is a founder of Exogen, Juvent, Marodyne Medical, and Lahara Bio, which use physical signals to regulate biologic processes. He has published over 300 articles, has been cited ~33,000 times, with an H-index of 93. He is a fellow of AAAS, NAI, ASBMR, BMES and AIMBE. Dr. Rubin received his AB degree from Harvard, and his PhD from Bristol University, U.K.
Dr. Rubin is a world authority on vibration therapy and whole body vibration platforms and their affect on health.

Also interesting that vibration is good for muscles and bone, humming is good for the vagus nerve, and rebounding is good for the lymphatic system. Our bodies NEED this kind of movement!

My brother & I have an aggressive form of arthritis that includes Osteo. He noticed many years ago after he ride his motorcycle he got some pain relief and just sort of felt better. Shortly after.he told me I found a notice about independent trials being run with a vibration macine improving people with arthritis. At that time about 25 yrs ago the machine used was nearly $4,000. - way out of our reach. I had always noticed that after I rode on the back with my dad or brother I felt better but thought I was imagining it maybe. Same result riding our large scooter. A reg sized larger type motorcycle is one huge vibration platform. The more we rode the better we felt. This is the first I’ve heard about this in 25 yrs. Thank you.

I think this also makes sense from the quantum mechanical view. Waves are always vibrating and every apparent thing is made of quantum waves. Apparent or perceived spin is also an effect of wave vibrations. So we all need to get our vibes right. Its much like music and often even is music. Merry Christmas its the 25rh of march and that's a good vibe to import.

The ending bit reminded me that when my Dad had surgery on his neck to remove arthritis and enforce it with a metal plate, he did have a special rigid neck brace that would 'zap' that area daily for many months, before he went to a soft brace for a few more months. I never asked him what type of zap it transmitted, tho.

This is interesting. I hope I can get a response. I work in the ICU as a nurse… we have a lot of patients who are bed bound. Either they have been for a long time and most likely will never walk again or they are recovering from an illness or procedure and can’t walk for a while. I’m aware the longer they are bed bound, for whatever reason, the quicker there is muscle and bone atrophy. After listening to this interview regarding vibration therapy for osteoporosis, I’m curious about something the respiratory therapists do called CPT. This setting on our ICU beds allows the bed to vibrate for 5 - 10 minutes to help with secretion/mucous mobilization. Is it possible this vibration of the bed could help repair bone density? If so, this is something very easy we could do for all of our patients.

@@wildyarns1894 I think there are other options. I'm looking for a vibration plate with 30hz capability. I watched a Power Plate youtube and she is "dialed" it to 30 hz and did exercises on it. The Marodyne is not the only cookie on the shelf and at 5K, it is waaaay out of reach for the vast majority of folks. Leave it to "academia" to be unrealistic. I didn't like the Dr. Rubin in an investor is this plate either.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that the medical statements he is making about the range of frequencies that are effective are not accurate. But if in the course of this entire presentation it’s not acknowledged that he works for that company, that’s a bit concerning. I admit I have not watched the whole presentation yet to see whether the disclosure was made.

In 2015 Dr. Rubin did a clinical trial with Dr. Doug Keil at Harvard University examining the effects of low magnitude mechanical stimulation to improve bone density in persons of advanced age (8). The research team recruited a group of frail elderly people between 75 and 95. The majority of the study candidates had rods, and a mixture of total knee and total hip replacements. The team found that there were no adverse events or loosening of rods during the use of the low intensity vibration platform. It is always a good idea to have a conversation with your physician or your orthopeadic surgeon if you have had a joint replacement or have plates or screws before engaging in LiV treatment. melioguide.com/osteoporosis-treatment/whole-body-vibration-therapy/

I am energized and excited. I am concerned that when i take this to my group (we already have the video) many people will respond by saying they won't need to exercise because all they have to do is stand on the plate. This SUPPLEMENTS exercise, correct? It does not REPLACE it. Correct? I spend a LOT of time convincing the members of my group to exercise daily "in a serious way" for reasons beyond the bone health issue. I want them to reduce fracture risk by increasing body strength (muscle) and balance - reduce falls etc., have better recovery. Also - very important! - most of the members are gravely depressed and frightened by their medical practitioners who tell them that they are "going to break a hip and die" and tell them that "exercise won't help" and insist only pharmaceutical intervention (which is problematic for many). From my experience, going from a sedentary lifestyle to an active one involving multiple workouts every day (yoga, then a walk, then later online dance, etc. etc.) takes one from feeling like a weak and damaged creature that is so frail that they could "break your leg just walking around" (as an ill-informed doctor once told me) to someone who feels strong, capable, and sturdy on one's feet. SO. The last thing I want to do is encourage people to "just stand on this thing and you don't have to exercise." Our members are generally older post-menopausal women with a multiplicity of medical factors affecting their bone health and a panoply of fracture histories. How can I give them this encouraging and extremely helpful information without having them think that they don't have to exercise after all? How can I make it clear that - if this is in fact the case - that low-intensity vibration therapy does NOT supplant daily exercise? By the way if you are curious, and want to "lurk" on the group (you are welcome to contribute as long as there's no promotion or advice-giving - we have other PTs as members, as well as other professionals) and it's an endless source of information, case histories, support, etc. here is the address. It's called Prolia Side Effects and Complaints and is an international discussion group that discusses FAR more than just issues with denosumab. Vibration therapy is one of them! facebook.com/groups/988541067970186.

Hi Diane. Thanks for your detailed comments. LiV does not (and cannot) replace exercise. It is a supplement to a well designed program, for those that are best suited to vibration therapy. For example, it has some effect on improving your balance but it cannot compete with balance exercises. It does not make you stronger and thereby give you the strength to catch yourself in case of a fall. It does not improve your posture. It does boost your cell activity (especially older folks) for building of bone. Next week's video (yes, there is one more) gets into this in more detail.

@@margaretmartinpt Fabulous. Exactly the answer I was looking for. I must thank you and Dr. Rubin very much for saving me from buying a product that could have done harm. @@margaretmartinpt MargRet, I’m walking like I’m on fire, eating a lot better, and reading your books! I’m currently having some mid thoracic back pain, along with my old injury L3/4 pain. I just omit what causes me discomfort, and do what I can? I also have a Dexa scan scheduled for this Tuesday. It is at a new facility, so I am told, I cannot compare this to all of my old ones. I am expecting bad news, as I can feel the changes in especially my back. I really don’t want to know the numbers, as I will not take Prolia or the bisphos. drugs. I want to have them on file to compare in a year, to see how I do with exercise and diet. Do you think the scans are just a waste if you have no intention to try the meds? Just wondering. I have learned so much from your YT channel and your books. Thank you.
