It's so weird. Especially in America there are far more pressing and better researched health hazards than yerba mate. The amount of sugar and chemicals in americas food is baffling for europeans standards. Makes you wonder if the coffee industry is funding these waves of studies on yerba health hazards lol.

This is just blatantly not true but Europeans constantly say it. There are many food categories in which the FDA is more strict than the EU. In the vast majority of cases they have the exact same regulations due to trade relationships. And there are not "waves of studies" on yerba mate. As the video explained, there is a legitimate connection to PAH's, and some mate drinkers are habitual meaning their exposure is significantly more than from barbecued foods or other excuses offered in the video. It's a matter of common sense frankly.

You can get unsmoked Yerba mate. Also all of the studies he refers to find a ‘correlation’ correlation does not mean causation. I had a ham sandwich yesterday for lunch at a sandwich shop and I forgot my keys there. So does that mean ham sandwiches make you forgetful?

In Paraguay everybody drinks mate. Well mostly they drink it ice cold (which is also not good for the stomach), but never ever have I heard of somebody having cancer of drinking mate. None of my relatives had cancer, and I have a large number of relatives living there. Remember this: Coffee industry is one of the biggest in the world. Sure they don't want people to drink mate

@@trippymain4644 it's amazing. Well I would advice to take water with ice cubes. If the water is not cold enough it doesn't taste well. Also you can try Yerba with different herbs or with fruit flavours that's pretty refreshing. The taste of Terere is not as strong as with hot water, so I usually give the water more time to sink in especially in the beginning.

In Brazil, the south region is where people drink more yerba. However, specially older people, will drink it very fast and very hot, which led to mouth or throat tumors. Drinking it only when it's hot but comfortable is the way to go

Well it has really high antioxidants compared to processed foods and cigarettes. Its really healthy. I get that dont consume too much as moderation is key, but i dont see a link between yerba mate with cancer, its really nonconclusive for such a popular well loved drink. 🤷‍♀️ its up to the drinker to decide if its worth the risk.

Thirdly the smelting process used to produce the traditional straw used when drinking from the gord has greatly effected the results. My advice would be to ditch the gord and straw and drink it another way hence removing that from the equation

I only drink air dried Bio yerba mate just to be on the safe side and ig I like the taste more. Nothing over 65°C should ever pass someones lips otherwise it can cause damage like cancer or just burnings.

In the end of day, moderation is the key to a healthy life. Too much or too little of something good for you is bad. For me I think just balanced and watch how much you drink if you're worried about your health.

You can just drink air-dried yerba. And it's all just probabilities, higher exposure to PAHs simply increases your risk of getting cancer, just like flying a plane or obesity. Also using life expectancy is stupid. Greece has a life expectancy of 81 years, even though 40% of its population smokes. The oldest (known) person to ever live (she died at 122) was a smoker for most of her life and only stopped at 117. Does that mean that smoking doesn't increase your risk of getting cancer?

Generally factual information as far as I've seen after reading the studies. However one point is I think not correct and one point is left out. Not correct: Does not exceed the limits for PaH in drinking water. I've read that statement from one study, but if it ever was correct, it's to my best understanding no longer the case. The limit claimed by the study was something like 600 microgram per liter, whereas as I see it it's 100 today. Correct me if I'm wrong there. How much PaH you actually drink is highly debatable with studies ranging from low amounts to one particular study finding up to 50% of the content of the source product which in some cases and for some unnamed brands was ridiculously high - leading to such claims like drinking 2 liters of Mate a day is like smoking anything between 2 packs of cigs up to 100 cigs. It's likely less dramatic than that, because that study - while trying to recreate the classical drinking style of re-extracting 12 times from the same sample - let it steep 5 minutes for each extraction, which is not what mate drinkers usually do. Now for the one point that sadly might make all that irrelevant and isn't mentioned here: There were studies showing a similar level of PaH metabolites in mate drinkers who did not smoke as in smokers who did not drink Mate. This in my opinion is a huge smoking gun that can't be explained away. Again, I'd love for someone to correct me on this if I'm wrong - in fact I'd love it to be wrong on this, because I've just recently started drinking Mate and I love it. I've been drinking 1-2 liters a day the last weeks before I've found the information on the PaH content in Mate. And while I'm sure many people could get away with drinking it all their life without consequences, just like many smokers manage to stay cancer free, the decision to accept that increased risk is not an easy one IMO.

If you are still concerned about yerba, I recommend looking into the foods you regulary eat. There are so many processed foods sold today that contain disgusting amounts of chemicals that all may or may not cause some sort of health issue. Unsmoked mate is a microscopic risk of compared. There is almost no risk free life in our industrialized world. If you stay clear from alcohol and anything that you smoke (cigarettes, weed, cigars etc) then you are already better off than most.

@@XaitoThere’s only two things listed by the WHO as 100% non-carcinogenic….and one of them is not water 😒….the problem with cancer research is proving causality, if you do a biopsy of a cancer cell and find sodium in the cell then you could claim that sodium caused the cancer. This is the state of research and it takes a bit of background knowledge to understand what your reading and what statistics and research are actually telling us.

You can specifically look for unsmoked brands. However in the first drying step it is dried in a way that still introduces some PAHs. But unsmoked variants contain far less.
