That "poor little bug" at the end is called the Spotted Lanternfly. It's not native to the US, it's from Asia. It's an invasive species surrounding mostly the northeast (It's kind of a big thing over here LOL), and it's known for destroying nearly every plant it sees. They usually appear around late spring/early summer and mature around mid/late summer. I've had lanternflies destroy our boxwoods, dig holes and lay eggs on our magnolia tree, and eat up our roses. I've also seen other people's trees completely covered in adult lanternflies, laying their eggs and eating away at the inside. You'll actually see signs around the neighborhood saying "see it, report it!". If you find lanternfly eggs/larvae, you usually should save and send them to a research lab/show them to an expert, or even better, destroy them. They also have an annoying habit of landing on people. If you ever see a spotted lanternfly, for the sake of our agricultural health and safety, please kill it! (If it doesn't fly away within half a second first...)

Just so y’all know, the last video was of a young Spotted lanternfly. They’re an invasive species in my area (i live in Pennsylvania) and are a major pest, both for crops and people. They jump high and without balance, so they sometimes land on people and it’s super creepy. Don’t worry though. They’re also bad jumpers and can’t jump high more than about three times, meaning it gets easy to step on them after a few hops. So if y’all see these guys, step on them whenever possible. You don’t want them in your area. TRUST ME. Edit: three hours later and I find that I accidentally got a lot of people discussing these pests. Which is good. Its important that the word gets out about these guys because they are a threat to crops. I also saw a handful of people talk about “pretty” these bugs are, which…cool. But it doesn’t change the fact that they are a threat to food crops and have a very bad habit of jumping onto people, regardless if you were intending to step on them or not. Some of you mentioned that you’re also pa natives (hi!), and in particular are from east-southeast pa (I’m there too), and how you’ve been seeing them less in your areas. That’s great! Keep up the good work. But do remember that just because you’re seeing less of them doesn’t mean that there’s not a chance they will spike back up in numbers. Just keep stepping on those little pests, and hopefully we can make sure they don’t come back one day.

@derpychicken21312 жыл бұрын
@@AustinGDesigns The term invasive is used purely to describe other species in relationship to humans. It is quite selfish of us, but invasive species are usually labeled as such because the negatively impacts the biodiversity of life around them that causes economic damage. While we certainly cause much ecological damage, because most of it is for short term economic gain, we are not labeled as such. Species that have integrated into a native food web and allow an ecosystem to balance back to its original state are usually referred to as "naturalized" instead of invasive. Things such as Dandelions that originated in Eurasia are often considered a naturalized species. While we may not be able to change the damage right wing politicians do to the environment due to their practices of unregulated industry, we can at least try to help save what is left of our ecosystems. So please, report sighting of the Spotted Laternfly to slow its spread and killing of our native trees, that provide crucial shelter and resources to other native wildlife.

That girl has powers. When I did my Dr Scient studies on glaciology I had a mate who studied "Chironomidae" (non-biting mosquitoes) as a paleoclimatic parameter and he could make them dance and work out in front of his face by humming as some freaky military drill-instructor. Just give her a scholarship. She may save the world. When you can make insects listen to your commands - either become a scientist or apply for DC or Marvel ASAP (the latter two are better paid but slightly less interesting jobs)
