Actually the most common use of bloodhounds is to find missing people, not catch criminals and missing people are not infrequently children. So having them attack a missing child they are tasked with finding is kind of counterproductive.

Bloodhound fun fact: cadaver dogs are trained to sniff out a very specific compound that human corpses start to emit within _seconds_ of death, for things such as murder investigations and search & rescue (but without the rescue, I suppose). The stuff they snuff is so peculiar though, and their noses so sensitive, that they can still detect it _years_ later! They're trained by placing a tissue paper on a body for a few minutes, and then having the dog smell several tissues and pick the correct one. They're so good, that even if the body has been moved in the mean time, cadaver dogs can still find the spot it had been at just off that very specific smell. If you're curious, the oldest body on record found by a bloodhound in this way, was buried in the woods _over sixty years prior!_ Now that's what I call a nose!

I think "washing" could work. A fleeing convict won't just stop and wait for the dog to catch up, so just slowing it down for a while should make escape plausible.
@HappyBeezerStudios
@HappyBeezerStudios Жыл бұрын
That is probably where the "crossing a river" idea comes from. A bigger stream that you can submerge in while swimming over would clean you up and make the part of the trail directly after the river much weaker. The pursuers also would need time to cross the river without getting wet (and they are there because they get paid, not to gain freedom), giving the escapee more time to gain distance. Basically weakening the trail as much as possible.
@deydreamer
@deydreamer Жыл бұрын
I disagree. Having watched a lot of police chase videos, criminals bail out of their cars and hide in wooded areas where the helicopters can't get a line of sight. Also lots of videos out there of them hiding in backyards/under cars/dumpsters

@@deydreamer Yes, but if you KNOW you're using the washing tactic specifically to slow down and confuse the dog (which we saw works really well), but not intending to get it off your trail completely, then you would also know that it would eventually catch up if you stop and thus to keep moving whenever possible. What you're talking about is the psychology of escaped criminals, not the physical limitations of escaping. Plus, of course you see videos of escapees hiding like that, because they're all the idiots that get caught. The ones who get away with it, and thus are demonstrating successful escape tactics, you'll never see. So just by saying that lots of those videos exist doesn't indicate plausibility because you have a biased selection process.

If it's an uncastrated male (Do they use those as police K9?) the b**ch-in-heat urine absolutely 100% works. I've experienced this first hand. The male dog brain completely shuts down all its higher functions. No amount of training can overcome this basic instinctual reaction.

They just said it was harder to teach an old dog new tricks, not that you can't. But we most usually use it so say humans stuck in their ways, stuggle to pick up new concepts. 7 years isn't super that old for dogs. They can easily live to about 15 years or more. I think the reason none of these blood hound myths are working is because they're confusing ways to throw off human trackers with blood hounds. Crossing a river or climbing a tree are ways you stop your tracks from appearing on the ground, not how you stop a blood hound.

That police dog is not a very good police dog, a real good police dog does not eat that meat, because we teach them not to do that, even in training this kind of stuff is used all the time to teach the dog not to eat things. I've been walking around in that suit for 7 years 5 days in a week, and not one dog will eat meat when I try to feed it to the dog and before I have the change to give it, the dog has already attackt me, so there is no change that will happen, at least in my time when I was a helper I couldn't manage it, because there are exercises for it, and with a number of exercises, meat is used, while the dog has to guard things and the dog is never allowed to move away from it, only when the person comes too close (about 1.5 meter away) so there is a little chance that you can give a piece of meat to a dog that we trained, that will never happen, also you can't afford that either, suppose someone gives that dog poison, so it's learned to the dog at a fairly young age, and a good police dog will never accept meat from a stranger, that is what he has been doing all along and always learned, because that is a big part of his training, It is no coincidence that police dogs are selected for specific jobs, and whether this is a guard dog or a real police dog there is also a little difference here, because you have OB1 and OB2 and for a police dog you have PH1 and PH2, but in both cases you do not want to be bitten by such a dog.

Ahh yes, but remember: this was originally filmed/aired back in 2007/2008, so that’s almost two decades ago now. Were dog harness a mainstream idea back then? Were they readily available to purchase for dog owners? I’m asking because I actually don’t know, and I couldn’t find out with internet searches... to be honest, I never saw dogs being walked in harnesses until about the last 5 or so years where I live. So yes, always use a harness for your doggos health and comfort, but I don’t think it’s exactly fair to say that the Mythbusters forgot something when it wasn’t exactly common knowledge or an accessibly technology back in 2007. However, please correct me if I’m wrong 🙏🏻

For a proper test there would obviously not only old dogs but also young dogs and medium aged dogs. Then see if the younger dogs learn faster and if the old dogs don't learn at all. And for a proper bind test, the trainers wouldn't know which dog is of which age. And if we want to go all the way, repeat the test with humans. Can we teach old humans new tricks?

Small amounts of chocolate can be alright, but their body can't break it down as effectively as humans, so too much can and will absolutely kill them. It also could depend a bit on the dog itself, as like humans, some can deal with it better than others. It's not really worth the risk testing it to find out, however.
