i love how your border collie reacted to you when you just said the word "Back" right at the end of the video. She definitely recognizes that word.

Exactly what I want ! I want a loose heel for my dog ! They don’t have to be RIGHT next to me, but I need them to listen to demands pretty much immediately. Stay near and when I say heel, you heel. When I say come, you come back. And no chasing after people or other animals on trail. You have lovely dogs btw !

Hello. I have a dog that looks exactly like your black dog. I rescued her from a rescue so never was really quite sure what breed she is. Some people think she's part border collie and part German Shepherd. Because she sort of has border collie hair but her tail is different and fanned like your dog. What breed is your black dog in the video?

I've walked dogs off leash for almost 40 years. In DC in the old days, they were trained to stop and sit at the corner. It was fear of me that kept them from going in the street but i could ride a bike and they would follow me off leash down the Mall, but those were pre-terrorism days. Nowadays you probably could not bet away with it, unless it was a Sunday morning sunrise.

I really want to be able to let my dog off leash but I’m scared she will run off. She thinks it’s a game and wound come to me

Start with a long line and increase the distance between you and her slowly. Starting this in a big open field is perfect. Once you notice she is listening better and doing check ins, then you can start at off leash areas (not typically dog parks) but areas where dogs have trails and can be off leash legally. Good luck!

Well, that didn't work well now, did it? 😅 "Soon you'll have to say it less and less". When exactly is that "soon"? How old are your dogs? What were they bred for? I don't mean to be rude or anything (that's just how frankly Berliners communicate), I just don't think it's the best way to promote reward-based training. Seeing that and hearing "no punishment XYZ" kind of makes me, the viewer, wonder, how much better other training methods work, compared to what I see - which is a shame, because R+ training can be so much more effective than what we see in the video. Anyway, thanks for the recall-willingness in potentially dangerous situations. ❤

I find it hard to understand why people with adult dogs still can't get their dogs to come back to them and walk close when need be. And to wait and leave it, and to drop it. And to stay. These are very important commands that should be installed in dog from a early age. It's not there fault if the dog is a rescue, and wasn't taught previous. But if you have an adult dog and you've had them from a puppy or had them over a year and they don't have these basic but important commands, then owner is at fault.

Learning is not only a process for dogs, but for their handlers, too. And believe me, there is a lot of false advice out there. Not being able to control a dog doesn't mean you're not trying. Often it means you had the wrong master yourself. But I agree completely, that one needs to at least leash the dog if they can't control it by other means. If the dogs in the video were mine, they'd still be leashed at that age, as I don't consider them well trained (this is the only video I know!).

Don’t be a f. ego, and start also thinking about other people, especially kids, who might be scared of a dog. I don’t think anybody wants you on that trail, with your dog, but you, so try not to disturb others as much as you can!...
