I rescued an elderly dog that was completely unfamiliar with living in a house. It was so rewarding when she was finally able to come in and feel safe. My senior cat who is a former feral himself, lent a hand with the taming, showing her that affection a good thing and was an ambassador to the world of being a pet.

She may have been strongly reprimanded in the past for walking on wood floors by a previous owner. It took 2 weeks of work for my gal to feel sure that she was allowed on the sofa. And a year to be 100% confident that she was allowed up there whenever she wanted and was never going to be in trouble for it. I did cry the first time she finally relaxed enough to fall asleep on my lap on the couch. Their victories can sound small but they're so powerful because of the freedom and calm and happiness they can unlock. What a great person for investing all that time and effort and having such patience and love to help this gal learn that it's ok to walk on wood floors. A home should feel like a safe place for everybody who lives there.

The way Hope behaved in fear and hesitation to the wooden floors, I wonder if she had been brutally punished for having ‘accidents’ on the previous owner’s floors. She walked the hallway hugging the walls out of fear and expectation of some horrible punishment. Glad Hope is in her forever home full of love and care by her forever fur mom.

I took a tied-out dog that had NEVER been inside. For him bare floors were terrifying things. First day was straight to the vet who had an acre of poured floor, light colored and smooth and hard as glass. He spread-eagled. No amount of coaxing could get him on his feet and I think we sort of pulled him into the exam room on his belly. Skinny as a rail, mange bald, and turned out to have heartworms. Everyone who saw him said the same thing. Oh you poor thing! The most expensive dog coming in the door we ever had. When he was all vetted up and feeling better, there wasn't a happier dog on earth. Named him PT. Had him about 10 years. Worth every penny.

Having had a chocolate lab with the same challenge and 13 years of observation I believe it is their depth perception and slick floors are confusing. To D.G. Is it too 🤔 "silly" to add that my last 2 losses of those I love ❤ were my sister and our heart's 💕 comforter, our furry baby, a dog? He was always a blessing, day after day, for our hearts and minds. He was perfect and perfectly made for each of us singly and together. He was family, consolation for the losses of our parents & her husband, and a continuing joy. Now I'm alone, an orphan, and I have 2 holes in my heart ❤ that are filled with them both. I am grateful for them and their love for me. Our pets are miracles for us, just like we are miracles for each other. I am happy for you that you had your precious child even tho' he had to leave you so soon. He was a treasure for you.

I love the way Cezar Milan handled this with a Great Dane who was scared of slick floors. He tricked the dog into walking onto the slick floors by keeping his attention with a toy, then once the dog was on the floors you could see a moment of shock, then acceptance as if, "Oh, I was scared of nothing. I've been playing on this floor without any issues." Good stuff!

A lack of socialization could do it. You're supposed to introduce puppies to different kinds and textures of turf to get used to them. Maybe original home only had carpet or she was born outside and never say shiny floors. This is one of the reasons to take puppies to the beach, the park, pet stores etc. Not just to meet people and dogs but get used to different things in other environments.

Since dogs have been living with humans for a long time, they are said to be able to read our emotions. Many dog owners may have some idea of what they are feeling, such as going to the side of someone who is sad and comforting them with a lick, or wagging their tails vigorously when they are happy. Dogs have excellent senses and cognitive abilities, and can distinguish the slightest sounds of breathing, heartbeats, and tone of voice, and respond to human emotions

The sound of her claw's click clapping down the wooden floor in the hallway must have been the best sound ever you must be so proud of her when she finally conquered her fear 🥰🥰

he might be in pain. there was this animal show with the same type of behavior. the owners were trying to find out why their dogs were doing this. they thought it was kinda a cute behavior. The show found out that both dogs with the same behaviors had knee problem and had their ligament torn. one was Maltese and one was black lab. So, when the floor slippery, they are in pain. one of the dog was only 1 yr old. but they run when they are in dog park bc they are excited. but dont walk in the house. so the owners didnt know it was their knees.

My dog is a puppy mill rescue, and he had a similar fear of the changes in the flooring. He’s still uncomfortable with grass. But he’s my soul-pup and rescuing him was one of the best choices I’ve ever made!

She's such a beautiful dog. If I wanted a dog (my cats would never forgive me, so I can't), I'd be happy to have a dog like her. I've done a lot of work with my rescue cats, and I'm sure dogs would repay all the effort you put into bringing them out of their shells, just as my cats did and do. She's a gorgeous creature, and one day she'll forget she ever had a problem with wooden floors! :-D

What a little sweetheart! I've had too many dogs over the years, and the fear of slippery floors is very common. This one was a bit more phobic than most for sure. I'm glad you had the patience to get her through it. I'll keep those chicken crackers in mind. Thanks for sharing.

Our dog had gotten up there in age and suddenly became afraid to walk on the tile in the kitchen. He had to walk on it to get outside or to the water and food so we were really confused. He had begun to have hip problems that comes with a dog's age. Then one day we had a friend's dog over and she ran out to the backyard and he followed not even thinking about the tile and we witnessed him slip and we realized that why he was afraid. After he slipped he took a little while to get up because it hurt his hips. We immediately went out and got skinny rugs to cover the paths he would take to get to what he needed and he never had a problem again.

I had had my cat for about three years when I moved into a new apartment that had ceiling fans in several of the rooms. He was terrified of them at first and hid under the lip of the cabinets in the kitchen for the first few hours. I basically just sat down with him, held him, and petted him to reassure him until he calmed down and realized the ceiling fans weren't gonna get him. Had a bit of a relapse when I actually turned the fans on but he got over it quickly.

When we installed a ceiling fan in our kitchen, for about a week all of our cats would only cross the kitchen at a full run. They eventually learned that the fan wasn't dangerous. I suspect part of the problem was that they were indoor-outdoor cats who had experience being mobbed by birds (swallows especially *hate* cats and will dive-bomb any cat they see). I think the fan looked like an aggressive bird to them.
