These are actually a very intelligent dog. The test they use to measure intelligence with dogs is flawed because it's based on obedience. These dogs are very independent so the test don't measure this type of intelligence well. I have 2 of them and they are more of a friend than a pet. I think mine have trained me better than I have trained them.

Right. Mine was not stubborn, she was independent. They have a mind of their own and think before acting.

@@finngamesknudson1457 I think mine have trained me more than I've trained them. I have a strong personality and I can be intense sometimes and they test how far they can push. My wife is short and is very sweet and those dogs get their way with her. It's actually impressive to see how well they can manipulate people into doing what they want. I won't own any other breed after having these. I know my wife and kids can be at home without me and be just as safe as if I was there.

They are highly intelligent. I’ve seen them grasp a skill in one repetition. They are not known for obedience so they must see a reason to do something before they do it.

@@flutevet my male is like that. He will be barking on the back deck and I will go out to call him in, he will walk down the steps, give me an acknowledgement and walk away. You can tell them to do something, you just can't make them. I've come to look at them like a partner, they do things for me like safety, security and companionship and I feed them. It was something that was hard to get used to when I got my first one. When I got my male he was already a year and had no training from his previous owner but we got that fixed in about 2 weeks. He knew within that time what was expected from him and I knew what to expect from him. We bonded instantly.

I have two now and they are the most loving, sweet, goofy, fun, and devoted dogs. I had a Great Pyrenees and Labrador Retriever mix. He was the BEST dog I've ever had! He was a gentle giant but a protector. He was the perfect mix. Yes they slobber and shed like crazy, BUT those two things are no big deal given the love, devotion, sweetness, and comedy value!

There is no need to buy one. There are adoptable GPs in rescues all over North America. There large, wonderful dogs are hard to re-home so, please adopt, don't shop.

I have a female Great Pyr mix (with 25% Husky and 25% Malamute). Such a sweet and gentle dog. They also live longer than some other large dogs like the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Newfoundland. My girl, who is about 100 lbs., is over 14 years old. I would definitely recommend one as a family dog. Just be careful because they will run on you if not fenced in properly (also they have huge paws and can dig under ill-fitted fences. I know this from experience.

Great job on getting her to 14 years. I know many dogs dont make it that far. We have a female - she weighs in at 92. She may have been the runt of the litter, I fell in love with her face and eyes, she is beautiful. My friend breeds them and I knew I was getting a quality pup and pure breed.

This breed is very smart, independence thinking does not work with obedient. They are thinking, self starting and protective without being aggressive. Their love of property, family and animals is upmost in their heart.

The most common name of this dog breed in France is "Patou" (pronounced pâtuh) wich came from latin word "pastor" (shepperd).

Also, purebred characteristics include double dewclaws. Important to add: do not get these dogs unless you have a large, well- fenced property. They need space to patrol, & will take to digging if bored or lonely. Chip 'em.

my companion Kara is eight, my eyes and ears .. 120 lbs and she loves to talk. We live on the water but doesn't swim, soaks when its hot but she definitely loves the cooler temps, winter is her favorite loves the snow. She visits the close neighbours for treats and will head back home when told to. mention the 'truck' and she is right there and put my window down. Most of what you read about this breed is accurate. Have had Labs for 30yrs and now this shedding bear, love her ...

Own both and I can tell you that this list seems to be developed from what can be found online. Kangals are by far more “I chose violence” vs Pyr’s are, “Hey, do y’all see this, you better get to stepping!”. That said I’ve had both ward of and kill coyotes. They are both very protective. Wh care about bit force? At plus 500 psi, it doesn’t matter at that point.
