I started fishing all of my bait casters on braid to leader because of Matt and Tim as well! It is honestly so much better. I use theAlberto knot, and have had zero issues with the strength of theknot. It is also not a very large knot, so comes through the guides easily. It’s also so simple to tie.

I always used fluoro to braid, mostly because I go out with 1 or 2 rods. Learned this with a top brazilian fisherman and he uses FS knot for HUGE peacock bass. Never lost a fish because of the know, and everytime I got snagged, it ALWAYS broke in the knot connecting the lure or snap, not the lines. A tip: take a torch lighter (torch type is important when there is wind) with you and BURN the tips of the lines, both fluoro (it creates a small bud that prevents the braid from slipper) and braid (it prevents the unbraiding in the tip). Berkley also has a heat line cutter that it works!

Another vote here for the Alberto knot. It’s not as skinny as the FG knot so forget about using micro guides. But mid-micro and up, it’s fine. And it’s super easy to learn and tie.

Great video, I've been doing braid to fluoro leaders for a while but have been using the alberto knot instead of FG due to ease of tying - I need to put the time in to learn the FG like you did. One thing I definitely agree with you on is not allowing your knot to get into the reel - I don't let the knot go lower than the first guide above the reel. Think it was Flukemaster who said it's always that first guide that gives the knot a beating and that's worked for me!

1 thing I definitely learned playing around with the FG knot on baitcasters is I had to lighten up the rods I use and back the drag off more then normally because even with going with a 25lb leader my leader would break right at my FG knot if I cracked them hard. Another thing I learned fishing docks or flipping heavy wood if your leader wasn't long enough I would actually hang my knot which wasn't a huge deal but aggravating. I also hated using braid to leader throwing any of my offshore dragging techniques (football jigs, Carolina rigs, big worms, ect...) and didn't like throwing moving baits like bladed jigs or spinnerbaits. There are some positives and definitely worth trying out but it's very situational for me...

In salt water, we just tie to a swivel snap. Then we rig up a bunch of lures with 20” 30lbs leader with a loop knot at the end. Makes for quick change on the fly. Works well as we have to let the lures hang anyway to cast them far. Based on the number of fish we have caught over the decades and even this week, there is no downside. But would be interesting to try this knot for bass fishing. Great content as always.

Tie the FG knot on your gear at home. (Salt Strong is the best video!) I recommend cutting the floro tag end then doing 6-8 alternating half-hitches to finish it. Tie the Crazy Alberto knot while on the boat. You get the FG knot wrong it’s going to come loose. Thank Tyler for the great content!
@TylersReelFishingАй бұрын
Definitely need to learn the Alberto too
@MattHeereАй бұрын
I went braid to fluoro when I first picked up a baitcaster. Braid is way easier to pick out the inevitable birds nests, and the durability makes it pretty cheap over time. Alberto knot is bigger than the FG by one diameter of your leader material, but it's way faster and easier to tie, especially as the line sizes go down and I've never had one break. When you make your FG knot video - try it with some BFS sized gear like 10lb braid to 4lb floro :)
@snackyxchanАй бұрын
FG knot is superior for braid to fluoro, just make sure to do like 5 or so half hitches around the fluoro and then another 5 or so after cutting the excess fluoro off. Some guides say 2 is enough, which it can be but I've lost my leaders with just 2 half hitch knots

FG braid to a 20-30 lbs mono leader works good for for baits with treble hooks like topwater walking baits and stuff because it can keep the hooks from hooking your braid and tangling up and to straighten the mono you can pinch it in between your fingers and pull it threw a few times(if your fingers are less sensitive) or you can pinch it in a leather belt and pull it threw.....the mono gives just a Lil stretch and shock absorption too so it'll keep you from pulling hooks out

All my baitcaster & spinning reels have braid, I use these outfits for bass & redfish, have always used the FG knot, sometimes change the leaders depending on the environment & type of fish I'm trying to catch. I also use to struggle sometimes with pitching jigs etc with around 6' leaders, FG knot catching the front guide especially with short pitches because the rod hadn't straightened out yet & pointed at the target, the knot wasn't going straight out through the front guide. The way I fixed this issue was to use much longer leaders, I usually do 3 arm lengths (18'), hence on short pitches the knot doesn't make it out of the guides, so no issues. I nearly always use monofilament leaders since my bass & redfish fishing are in quite stained waters which also mean I don't have to worry about my wallet when peeling of 18' every time. Also I have noticed the FG knot tightens down on a monofilament leader much easier than fluorocarbon, fluorocarbon doesn't allow the braid to compress & tighten onto the leader as easily.
@krisramos7453Ай бұрын
I'm exclusively braid to leader unless I'm frogging or whatever and its straight braid. I use the alberto knot for everything. Up to 15lb leader that knot works flawlessly. However when I use it on 17lb and higher the knot is too bulky. I think I need to take the time to learn the FG knot for the heavy line applications.

I run my setup with mono backing, braid to rod-length fluoro leader, and a very small profile snap that's rated for 25 lbs. The reason why I use a snap is so I don't get to a short leader and have to retie. Of course sometimes that leader will get damaged and I'll have to change it anyways, but I think my setup is the most efficient. In terms of practically and saving a bit of money.

"FG KNOT in under a Minute" by Pelagic Pursuit is the video title. The guy shows how to tie the FG knot with just your fingers. Takes a bit to learn, but it's super quick doing it that way. I can tie an FG knot with 10 lb braid and an 8 lb sunline leader no problem. The thicker the fluoro the easier it is, but once you get the feel for it, it's nothing. No using your teeth, none of that stuff. Also cut your braid tag end a bit longer, then use a lighter to melt it down. You won't end up with fraying like you have.

Double Uni is one of the weaker leader knots so that would absolutely contribute to breaking off more fish. Seen it in my own experience, as well as a channel called Bass Fishing HQ tested multiple different leader knots, and double uni was among the weakest, it broke at an average of like 20 or 30% less weight than the line was rated for, while others retained much more of the original line strength. The FG knot was the strongest by far.
