Doll Regrets? 2024 Retrospective

For me this past year, purchasing the Sparkle and Shine Clementine was my most conspicuous regret. I can't really explain it except that there was a palpable sense of disappointment after I unboxed her. That's the last RH doll I bought. I have difficulty with creativity too. It's hard to get started for fear of failure and also, we're our own worst critics. One piece of good advice I heard years ago was to lower your standards and keep going. 🥰

I ALMOST bought all four Sparkle and Shines when they went on sale. The legs got me. They remind me of my Novi Stars dolls, which I absolutely love, but I spent SO much money on dolls the past year, year-and-a-half, I just left them in my online cart and never bought them. Maybe one day, but I don't have that rabid obsession that I have for some of my SDCC, Mattel Creations, Begoths, my precious Scary Godmother doll and my Disney Attractionista Haunted Mansion Gracey doll. And oh my gosh, my Freak du Chic menagerie! The obsession that reignited my doll collecting after decades of "sobriety " LOL 🤦🖤🤍♥️

I understand the feeling of not starting something with fear of it not being perfect... if you do get around to more doll customizing I'd definitely love to see videos of that! Even in the method you described of like sharing pictures and voice over stuff 🤗

21:22 🖐️♥️ Negative self talk is painfully common, you are NOT alone on this. We're all different, but I got programmed very very early, like just learning to talk early. I learned to speak very kindly to that inner child and give them the love, hugs and encouraging words they didn't get in the past. If that's not too weird...🤦

Honestly I have two regrets when it comes to collecting: 1) paying full price for something that went on sale a month after and 2)having something in hand or in my sights and talking myself out of it to never get it again or not being able to afford it now. The first one applied to Mattel's annual Dios de Muertos dolls. Ever since the very first one (which I got at retail at the time) I immediately bought them at their original price ($75-$80) when they first dropped. With the exception of the first two all of those releases not only did not sell out but were widely available and discounted on Amazon. Finally for the 2024 release I did not buy them at first drop waiting until they went on sale, which they did for $44 bucks on Amazon's Prime Day. The latest two were just not as good as previous releases but I wanted to get them because I have all of them and didn't want to miss them but I didn't want to pay full price.

Original Spectra does not have glue in her head (for sure the one made in China) so she will not deteriorate that much if it can comfort you. The translucent parts might suffer from yellowing a bit but mine is still in great condition (no yellowing of the translucent parts yet).

Mine only has slight yellowing, but that is good to know about the hair! Explains why I’ve never had a problem with it feeling gross lol I thought I was just lucky 😂

Usually I don’t regret much like money wise because for playline I always buy on sale. What I do regret is that sometimes those sales lead me to buying doubles which I do not need because of space issues. I always have a vision that I’m going to do something with my doubles but the truth is that I just don’t. Like this year I bought doubles of the Bratz pride set and a mowalola only because they were “cheap”. What I do regret money wise though is buying the Creature. That was money I shouldn’t have spent. I shouldn’t buy a pricey doll just because I like green. Lesson learned…

I have the same feeling about doubles too. There are very few that I don't regret, and those are generally versatile dolls that I can "play" with and looks good in other fashions. Or, sometimes they are so cheap that I can just use the outfit and donate the doll.

I also want to do doll customizing! I know i can be pretty good with practice. My chronic pain prevents me from diving into face repaints. For now I just add painted details on accessories & change up outfits.

I also regret not collecting the RH dolls earlier. Missed out on a few I wish I had. The ones you mentioned I have. The color pink is one of my least favorite color. 😂 I bought those dolls anyway cause they were beautiful to me.

Please don’t get down on yourself for ever being negative or going on rambles it’s why we love you!! It’s nice to see a doll content creator/collector that actually puts budgets and price points into account it helps with my major fomo when you agree smth looks cheap or that you’re skipping a doll too so thank u for keeping my wallet secure

Very thoughtful video! It's obvious how much you love dolls Your 'down to earth' views are great. I need more reasons to avoid buying dolls than reasons to buy dolls. Hearing you talk about your experiences helps me reflect on mine. My 2024 doll regrets are buying an Art Squad doll and 3 Crybaby BFF dolls just because i thought they were cute and were on sale for a very good price. They were fun to open and play with and choose a place on my shelf to display them. But then I just kinda forgot about them. However, when I saw the Decora dolls on sale recently, I was able to hold strong against buying them. I remembered how unsatisfying the other dolls were and saved my money and display space

I’m pretty lucky to not have any regrets with my dolls this year ❤the rest of the things in my life that’s a different story 😅 but at least with my dolls I’ve never been happier with my collection. I finally feel content, which is something I rarely feel. Every time I look at my collection I just feel so happy like I finally have the best dolls for me in the world. I used to always see other people’s dolls and think I wish I had that but now I’ve finally got my collection to a point where whenever I think that just looking at my dolls makes me think no my collection is perfect the way it is.

I relate to this alot!!!! (Talking about the custom work and doing something creative) I genuinely have such a hard time even showing my work because in my eyes I will tweak my art forever and ever till its exhausting. Then when I feel proud of my work and im finished for the moment, and wanna take a picture, or even think about sharing it, through the lens I see everything wrong with it, I see problems where they weren't before. Then I just imagine how bad it will look posted on my page 😭 It's a never ending cycle that I wish I could just break free of.

I was able to get the pink Sparkle and Shine for about half the price which was nice. I thought I waited long enough for the Monster High Monster Fest dolls to go on sale but after I purchased them for a good price, they went down even lower! Oh wells. I love your videos. I don't think you're being negative and your titles tell people what you're going to talk about. You're honest and just sharing your opinions. I wish some of the dolls from the past would come back. I would go on a shopping spree!

Main 2024 doll regret for me was not being willing to spend $130 CAD on the Jinafire Long doll when she dropped cause she is such a pretty doll and I’m in a finically stable enough place NOW to afford her but it was unreasonable when she dropped

I feel that regret with Spectra. I collected 90% of her original dolls and fell out awhile. I just got back into it and realized I missed the Creeproduction :( Im fortunate I got both face molds of her g1 doll, 1 opened which is deteriorating and yellowing and 1 MIB which seems mostly fine. But I feel my collection isnt complete without it so I hope to track her down eventually.

I purposely got the Haunt Couture Masquerade Spectra ( on the Mattel Creations sale ) instead of the Creeproduction, because of the saran hair. She was still double the price of the Creepro , but ...don't regret that choice.

I love this video! Can relate! I have been a play line/BJD collector. Play Line straggled in for years, got serious about it in 2017/2018, then moved on to BJDs until about 2020, then I look a break...From all of it, and I regret it because I feel like I missed sooooo many good releases in both spaces! I have been sort of catching up over the last year with the BJDs and play line over the past few months. The break also messed up my instagram so badly hardly anyone that follows me even sees my posts. This is very disappointing when I put hours into a custom doll, face, clothes, wig, and a photo shoot. I love Rainbow High, and was soooo averse to them when they came out, I didn't even pay attention. I thought the head was massive, like Blythe massive, and it photographs sooo much larger then it looks in person. Also the details in person on the older dolls...unmatched! I am full of regret I missed the best days! I actually like a lot of the reboot too, but they're just not as detailed and I don't care for the gimmicks . Feeling good about hopping back into Barbie right now tho...They slaying with the new releases! I get weird about customs too! My issue is I need to hyper focus, and if I don't have the time to start a specific part like the face or whatever and complete it, I can't start. Same with making a garment or a wig. So I end up not getting things done, because I can't start. The best part about customizing is that you can redo it if you mess it up. That's my fav part sometimes, cause you can always upgrade as your skills improve, switch things around to get it perfect! Once I picked up my customs again after my break, honestly, it made me feel sooo good and it inspired me to do more! Just start one! Then when it comes out beautiful and perfect you'll have the momentum to keep going!

Definitely regret not getting the Monster High Cleo and Deuce 2 pack, still hoping they get a rerelease 🤞 Would definitely love to see pics of any customs you do in the future if you are willing to share, though don't put too much pressure on yourself if it wrecks your creativity.

I totally relate to the customizing. I've never completed one because they are never good enough in my eyes 😭 (I started customizing in 2014) As for doll regrets, I started collecting this year (2024) and regret buying so many. The sales would get me even when I originally had not planned to buy that specific doll 🫠 I may have to sell some or see if I can package them in a cute way to give away at a toy drive.

NOT a Barbie fan, but one I kind of wish I'd gotten is the Surrealism Barbie. (Keiichi Tanaami) She sold out pretty quickly, was ridiculously expensive, but if I were gonna splurge on a collector Barbie it would have been her. On a good note, the magic eight ball is still available...😆

Absolutely loved this video, have never related more to something than what you said about getting started being creative, never heard someone put it in perspective like that!! I’d love to see your custom creations, could you not just do a final result video? Like have the final doll in hand and be like ‘yeah I rerooted with this’, maybe just show/talk through your initial sketches and do it retrospectively rather than taking us through the process? The RH Sparkle leg dolls. I only got 2...I didnt regret it, because like you said, you never know. Even though they were less articulation, the leg thing reminded us of Novi Stars. Not that I thought they'd raise to high prices. But I regretted getting Sabrina back in the day, thinking she'd go on sale ...she never did & then became hard to find at all. I just recently got her, but wish I would've back then.

Thanks for sharing! I, just this year, started collecting dolls. I was on Amazon looking for Monster High dolls when I discovered Rainbow High dolls. I was astounded! I bought the ones I really liked and I'm so glad I did. I'm not interested in any of their newest dolls. I, also, continued buying Monster High. I probably have about 50 dolls, total. For me, that's a lot. Oh, and I bought 4 Bratz dolls that I really like. So now, I want to focus on customizing dolls. I also want to customize a Calico Critters house, this year. So, this coming year will be about enjoying the dolls I have. I might buy a doll, occasionally, but I really don't have space to display any others. Oh, when I say I'll customize, I'm thinking of costumes. I want to do a few reroots, too. Anyway, I'm meandering. Anything you choose to do for your channel in 2025 will be fine. I'd love to see you work! Don't hold out for perfection. Mistakes are beautiful, too. ❤

i just wanted to share this because i have no one else to talk about this with. i bought this hinata hyuga doll (a character from naruto), which has been my holy grail for so long. the doll is very beautiful and well-made, and hinata is also my ultimate fave character in any media ever. i finally got to buy her this year after saving money for so long. but for some reason, i felt so... empty after unboxing her. there was no excitement or love, which i still don't understand why. the doll arrived in good condition-there's literally nothing wrong with it. but i just felt nothing. there was no high like i expected. i regretted buying that doll so much, and i still do every time i think about it 💔 i don’t even display her and just keep her deep in my closet where i can't see her. i wish i could get a full refund, but i obviously can't. i'll probably resell her, but i'm not sure if anyone would be interested since doll collecting isn’t a big thing in my country at all, and i’m not good with international shipping. i just want to get rid of it and have some of my money back that i spent on it 😭

Like somehow the saving and wanting and waiting was all the fun and then the item itself can’t live up to it. I wouldn’t film creative endeavors. It’s too hard to focus. I will take photos along the way. That’s more just documenting for myself though. If you wanted to make a video, maybe just use still photos with voiceover commentary describing your process. That helps other artists.
