It’s amazing to see Henley just close his eyes and listen to Dolly sing. He must have felt like it was one of the high points of his career. He once called Dolly an American treasure...I think he really meant it.

Someone mentioned that they thought the lyrics weren't "eloquent" enough for Henley standards. This song was written 60 years ago by the Louvin Brothers and is a country standard. He wrote most of these songs....but not this one. And their voices are amazing and do the song so much justice. What a great collection of songs.

When you have been fortunate enough to be a successful musician as Mr. Henley has, you are able to take the journey of many years and enjoy the fruits of its labor. Only a handful of musicians had this dream fulfilled. Don has done it all. He has written some of the greatest songs ever and here he is doing traditional country music. Time to stop and smell the roses. Enjoy Mr. Henley and thanks for the great tunes over the years. It's been a great ride.

What a good way to be reminded exactly why these two legends are still in such demand and continue to earn so much respect, decade after decade. Two vocal performances, each exceptionally good in its own right, but each complimenting and enhancing the other. They seem to put an enormous amount of themselves into this song, rendering it far more emotional and (as a result) far more believable than we ever usually get to hear in the majority of everyday popular music. I've heard in interviews that Don Henley loves the fact that Dolly was singing in a key a little higher than she might picked if given free choice, and I understand what he meant by this. There's an incredible edge in her high notes that is so beautifully expressive, I can't see how anybody could hear this and not be moved by it.

I agree. This song reminds us all of what the difference between what we grew up listening to, & that of what the kids of today have. Totally different. Before & even when I was born, they had music in the 70s, etc... That were a mix of ballads that could put you to sleep, or could make you stop crying when nothing else could; & songs with a great beat that could easily make you want to dance, sing, laugh, & more. I find that when Garth & that generation of singers came out in 1989 & 1990, that they were the last generation of singers who could pull off what my Country King & Queen The Possum & Dolly could do.

I heard Billy Joel interview Don Henley in NYC, and they spoke about this tune, its recording and the album. Don Henley was very impressive, and had what I would say are profound ideas, and a very interesting personal history, as well as also being remarkably funny in his own unique way. How many of us know that Don Henley started in his young music world by playing in a Dixieland Band? For this video Dolly Parton had to leave hospital where she was fighting illness (she has since recovered), and when she got this all nailed down she went back to hospital. She was kind enough to put a solid day of hard work in on this tune's video. Don Henley has a remarkably eclectic and deep relationship with music which includes music going back int the 1950's and from many parts of the music world.

The second half of that 2nd verse where she does this - it's an incredible passage in the song - and I believe it's the best I've ever heard her sound. These are words I wouldn't use lightly. But you have to credit Mr Henley with making a superb song choice there. He knew how well that would suit her, and how well it would suit both of them.

Two masters of pitch and phrasing, both still in top form. Impossible to imagine anyone better at perfectly complimenting vocals than Dolly Parton. Perhaps underrated for all of her contributions to other vocalists' work, she's the picture of grace for letting someone else get the spotlight. And Henley, an uncommonly epic vocalist himself, gives Dolly her due as well. PERFECT work all the way around; vocals, production, etc.

I love gems like this, found as the result of rabbit hole journeys. GF and I played a couple Glenn Frey songs on Alexa. I mentioned Frey and Henley's voiced worked really well together in The Eagles. So she requested The Garden of Allah next. While it played, I went to KZbin and found Don Henley's channel (because I want the artist to get the financial benefit, not some random person posting a copy, whenever possible.) Now I'm gonna have to buy Cass Country, or at a minimum, this song.

Wow, Not only did these two greats (and don't get me wrong. I'm a huge fan of both of them) really kind of 'not do justice' to this Louvin Brothers classic. but they left out what I consider to be one of the most amazing verses in all of country music. 'I'd be like a flower unwanted in spring. alone and neglected, transplanted in vain, to a garden of sadness where my petals would fall in the shadows of undying pain'. come on Don....that's a great tearjerker line. Oh well, I'm still glad they had the respect to cover it. so just consider this the rant of a cranky old man.
