It was a treat to stay up late on a Friday night to watch The Tonight Show. Seeing Rickles and Carson as a 13 or 14 year old has me literally rolling on the floor. After the Tonight Show it was followed by the Midnight Special. Those were golden years for me. RIP All.

I really didn't get to see The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson a lot as a little kid in the 70''s because we had a certain bedtime on a school night. I'm actually experiencing his shows more as an adult, watching him on KZbin. I remember Ed McMahon as The host of Star Search in the 80's and the American Sweepstakes commercials.

Funny Rickles talks about filling in for johnny, being friends with Bob Newhart, then also mentions the cigarette box. He'd famously break the cigarette box while Newhart was filling in for Johnny about a year later. Then a couple years later he almost broke Carson's either replacement or repaired cigarette box while guest hosting & interviewing Carol O'Connor.
