There's an old saying "Don't burn your bridges" and it usually implies that you are the one at fault in the scenario or that you did something wrong.
For me, it's just a matter of perspective. What most people say, for example, if you decide to renounce your citizenship is don't burn your bridges, implying that I did something wrong. When, in reality, that country didn't offer me the best healthcare, or banking services I needed to conduct my business.
You haven't done anything wrong if you decided to go where you're treated best, or where you can live a healthier life. Everyone deserves that, so we shouldn't cling to old ways just to make everyone else happy.

This is especially true for the insecure and sometimes smug cultures of New Zealand, Denmark and USA (and others). There’s a sense of “we are the best country in the word” in many of these countries which blinds people.

The more I progress in life, the fewer amount of people I can relate to and talk about these topics. When I was taking a Dutch exam, an Italian man who was also taking the exam asked me why I was there. I told him I wanted to get Dutch citizenship and that I had to give up my Turkish one to get it. He was baffled. He said he could never give up his Italian citizenship. Well, he didn't even consider the fact that Turkey gives a Blue card to native born citizens to act as a dual nationality for these cases (I bet Andrew didn't know this ;) or even the fact that I could later regain Turkish citizenship and not lose my Dutch one due to a legal loophole that allows you to regain a citizenship from a country you were born in. Or even more importantly, he couldn't even consider how painful it is for a Turkish citizen to get a visa for travel or work in the EU, and that being an EU citizen makes life so much easier in Europe. I have university educated friends who just don't "get it" because 1. they don't have the entrepreneurial mindset, and 2. they never had to get a visa for anything so they can not understand the value of their passport. There are so many possibilities and options in our modern world. People don't have the courage to take risks and go where they're treated best. They don't read the citizenship laws of the countries they're interested in, they never put their money where their mouth is. I do and now I'm in a much, much better situation than people my age back home.

People who never take risks are not the people who move things forward. They stay. Where they are. In their tribe... When they get old and start looking back at their life, they may regret what they didn't do. And then they die. Great video! This is the key to be an entrepreneur... or at least a traveller instead of a tourist.

I got all the flack you mentioned, and I was just moving offshore. In fact, I wrote an article that appeared in Zero Hedge, and the comments were heavily "I'm going to stay and fight! You should too! The grass is always greener!"

I feel very passionate about this topic because ever since I've started telling people(family and friends) that I want to move overseas, all I've gotten was this propaganda bulls*it of "why are you being so unpatriotic by not wanting to live here in the United States"? Over the last 10 years there seems to be this movement pushed by the government that you're unpatriotic if you abandon your country to go live anywhere but here. I believe its because they know life is better elsewhere and they don't want you to leave because they can't continue to feed you lies about why you should be greatfully for living here. To them I say, "Adios!" The US is ranked so low on the list of quality places to live it's not even funny. Honestly, I don't even care if I burn my bridges because when I go, I'm gone. Never coming back. EVER! 😋

Fantastic video! I have been there myself and many people have made me stuck in the middle of everything because of their lousy advice of don't burn the bridges! As it turned out, with all these overwhelming options and illusions and distractions, one has to carry a torch all along his way and doing nothing but burning bridges and limit options to push yourself getting forward. No middle of the road decisions anymore, either all in or all out.

From my research in the us, the biggest potential reason to keep citizenship is for large family assets to be passed down in a will - non-citizens can receive them, but at 40% tax (just like the exit tax) along some conditions. Not sure if it's absolute. But you can get around that coming back for a few years becoming a resident alien or something like that, getting a green card to acquire things tax free and then do your business and leave the country again.

I don’t think this is just western cultures, and i’m confident in this, because I’m not Western and my culture is even worse. My family has accused me of wanting to disown them for saying I don’t want to move back EVER. Nomads tend to be individualistic people, but most humans are collectivists no matter the culture. My government is in fact suspicious of anyone who’s been abroad for too long. I remember reading somewhere that humans are more social than dogs and less social than bees. So we’re just shy of eusociality. That’s really something. I mean you must be a traitor. You don’t think your country is 1000% best at everything (why else would you leave). How can you be trusted to toe the party line, if you’re not delusional about the land of your birth? People who can think critically are anathema to the party line. I think that’s what people are reacting to. When they really need you to conform, chances are you won’t.

The origin of "burn your bridges" is from ancient warfare, when Roman generals supposedly did it to signal to their own legions that there would be no retreat from a given position. Thing is, as an investor you always want the option to retreat from a position, surely?

Yes, the implication is that change is never worthwhile. As if countries don’t have clear directions just like a company would. Personally I do not think it is wise to plan to be in the USA in 15 or 20 years. Incremental change has real consequences.

Forget leaving the United States. I got so much flack for leaving California and moving to Alabama. After all, Alabama is the “worst” state in the nation, and only broke people move there. I’m no 7-figure entrepreneur, but I’m heading in the right direction - in Alabama. If I stayed in California, I’d probably still have a negative net worth.

It’s well known that Australians repatriating to Australia have a high chance of facing prejudice from local recruiters and HR. And recently an Australian became upset when I explained that I do business abroad for the tax benefits and frankly better treatment. She thought it was morally wrong not contribute to Australia. I think this blind nationalistic and superiority mindset prevalent in debt-ridden and high tax countries like Australia is breeding a false sense of security about their future prosperity.
