I've had my Gobi rack for five years on my JK and it's the best purchase I bought for my Jeep. I use it for soft and hard top and it's awesome. I carry my kayaks or my roof top tent. I have also used it to carry mattresses, Christmas trees, plywood, you name it it's been on my rack. I even set up lawn chairs to watch the fireworks on the 4th of July. You're mounting something wrong because my is solid as a rock even at highway speeds. I paid 1500 USD with ladder and wind deflector. The deflector is not great and I drive without it. You don't necessarily need to buy Gobi accessories to add stuff to it. The only Gobi accessory I bought was the quick release and it works great. I have added Hi lift jack, extra lights front and rear, rotopax, shovels, awning etc all without buying Gobi accessories. I overland all the time on decent trails and never had issues with this rack. Sometimes I even run without the rack because it takes no effort with my hoist set up in my garage. And, btw, anything you add to the roof of your Jeep is always going to make some noise. Also, I think it's the best looking rack out there. It mounts close to the body and doesn't look out of place and bulky like some cheaper racks. And no drilling!

@Will V do you leave the rack on 365/All the time? I'm a new wrangler owner (first time owner) and I just placed my order with Gobi - not sure I can keep mine on all the time due to height limitation in the garage but curious if you just leave yours on all the time.
@willv7868
@willv7868 2 жыл бұрын
@@ryanaugustus I leave it on all winter but in the summer I tend to take it off and on depending on my mood or when I'm carrying something. I have the quick disconnects in the front so it makes it easy. There are only two bolts in the back. With two people you can get it off in under ten minutes. I use a hoist I have set up in the garage. I hope that helps.

I have a Gobi on mine with the quick release option and ladders as well and I love it! It's funny because everything you listed I've done as well. There's been times I'd want to take it off but don't because I use it so often so I keep it on 365. There rated for 300lbs (I believe) and I've had probably a little more than that on there during a trip to Lowe's. But I highly suggest anyone getting it! You won't be disappointed. Especially on the 4th of July!

I’ve had my gobi rack for a year. The best thing to do for the soft top is to add pipe insulation to the rack. Not as thick as a pool noodle but allows the buffeting to stop. Also I took my wind deflector off. I had the same issue with the wind noise. I learned to deal with the noise.

So what you're saying is that you dropped $3K on a POS... increased wind-noise, unstable when off-road, will wear out or damage the soft top, losing functionality as you can't remove the window panels as easily, plus you want to add accessories like lights, attachment points for other items (further increasing the weight on the rack) Dude, send that thing back!

I had a Gobi rack on my previous Jeep ... a JK. The rack was very sturdy, but I never got the value out of it. Meaning that I only loaded cargo up top about 3-4 times. Having a 4-door Jeep; I can’t imagine a true need for more cargo space, unless going away from home base for more than 5 days. It sunk-in after a full Summer or 3-4 day trips where I could manage with organized packing in the cargo area. If I had to do it again, I’d do a Yakima setup with cargo box or Garvin at a fraction of the price to accomplish the same cargo volume.

Something you could maybe try (kinda obnoxious to have to modify a 3k product), would be to add some bracing from the side bars up to the rack in a few spots, looks like there's room to tuck one in at a shallow angle above the roof towards the inboard of the basket (if that makes any sense). The shifting around is because there's zero racking strength in that design. There's no lateral support to keep it from wanting to essentially "tip over" like a house of cards. You're right to be concerned about long term fatigue. Even with a hard top, the fact that they rely on some little rubber stoppers butted against the fibreglass top for lateral stability in a roof rack is a bit cheezy.

3k for the rack but they make spend more for rubber strips and such to stop the buffeting. If you have a soft top by the time you make it functional for a soft top you approaching 5k. If you say your able to work with a soft top I shouldn't need to spend another 2k give or take. Extra cost for mounts I get but not basic stuff to make it function. After seeing your video I wouldn't touch this product. Great video though. Saved everyone at least 3k.

Ahhh Casey I can see the disappointment in your delivery, it sucks when you have certain expectations with something and it doesn't match. The suggestion of the pool noodles is a great one, one of the guys in Edmonton has done that and it does help. Just make sure that they are secured on the bar well or they will fly off at highway speeds. The one other thing to remember is the weight rating, if I'm not wrong the stabilizers are part of that dynamic weight, also the off road weight is different as well due to the flexing and off angle torquing. There has been some talk about that lately, maybe it is time to look at a hardtop ?? But then there might be some better options with the hard top... Great review and honest thoughts Casey just one of the many reasons you have a good following, peace.

Thanks. I have since added pipe insulation to the cross bars which helps the buffeting. I think the biggest frustrating is a product with a description to be used with a soft top, product material, and demo videos and then has unexpected performance. They don't mention that the dynamic and static load ranges change with a soft top. I see metal cloak has released a new rack which is very strength oriented.

Another thing to add that I didn't see in the video and comments, is Gobi's lead time. I've been reading somewhere near 6 months after ordering before receiving it. I still want one for my Jeep. Like you, I'm guessing, I bought my JKUR new but it was a soft top only. I lucked up and found a hard top someone was selling that came off a 2017, so who knows, maybe you can luck up like I did. As for the wind deflector, if you decide to put it back on, I'd put something protective between it and your Jeep's paint. There's another Overlander KZbinr (can't remember his name) that did a video where the Gobi rack on his WK2 grand Cherokee starting eating away at his paint because of the wind deflector.

I have the ranger rack with my hard top JKU. I did spend extra for the tent isolators and was fortunate to get the extra ladder with their specials. The tent isolators are a good investment especially for a hard top, but I have never had my rack sway even before I installed the isolators. I was paranoid about the rattling but honestly I think you will always have some noise. I do routinely inspect the rack, which is their recommendation. Would like to see a Gobi install video, I think that will give a lot of people some reassurance with the install. So far no regrets, and I have put it to the test at BIBE on some windy nights in the backcountry.

Know it's a lot of money, but you can do step by step like the ladder and for me have both it's simmetrical fantastic to see and don't need to be gobi all the items like quickfist mount listened, I think have stuff on the side of roofrack expose more damage when overlanding in the forest, trees waiting your error! so if it's mine I will add the "raising kit" from hood to front windshield mount... I think it really depends. A good quick setup tent can go a long way. We aren't going out camping when we go out. We are exploring and adventuring and having the capability to setup for the night anywhere in any condition is a huge asset. We also camp year round in all kinds of weather. Terrain is not usually optimal, last week we camped on a boulder filled beach, we roll in when it's dark out, and I'm setup in 1 or 2 minutes in any weather. There is also a ton of wild life from wolves to bears which being 7ft in the air give you a bit of peace of mind. Lastly and what I consider the most important to me, is getting a good night sleep. It's dry, dark walls, lighting inside, and has a nice mattress. When I head out for several days, it can be long days of wheeling, recovering vehicles, and filming a video and keeping energy up to talk to the camera and get shots (which can be exhausting) and getting good sleep and a place to retreat to for some downtime in the evening is vital for me to make videos on a regular basis. There are some great tent solutions out there and situations I'd consider them just as good, but for me, in this region, and the adventures we go on, this is a game changer for me.

Good review and notes, Casey. Just a couple thoughts about Flex Friday Live, have or do you guys plan on uploading the older FFL's to the new channel? And what about a possible FFL from a campsite? Obviously no connection, but if Clint, Shawn, and yourself all mention what you'll be talking about and to leave some questions in the comments of a video before you shoot, I bet you could get a good pool for a recorded video. Cheers

Thanks. No plans to upload old episodes. I think the next time the three of us are together we will shoot a FFL. Clint lives 12hrs away and I live on an island.

Hey Casey, any chance you thought of just spending the money for all the up selling and just buy the hard top and secure to hard top. Keep soft and use for why you got soft to start with?

Some Triangulation in the corners would go a long way to stabilizing that rack. I would put a \ in front of the back window on each side, they could be bolted on. (LOL you're pointing to the center of the gusset kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHLampWaq7qBha8 ) I would also add a small gusset (probably sheet metal) in the front corners too. Affixing the ladder at you added to the uprights for the rack would help with stability.

I would buy a hard top and a rhino rack back bone, or I want to see about metal cloaks new rack they just released. After hearing everyone's wait times to get a Gobi rack and their stories with customer see service, I am not sure I'd put this rack at the top of the list of ways to mounts a roof top tent or cargo to your Jeep.
