I've had my Gobi rack for five years on my JK and it's the best purchase I bought for my Jeep. I use it for soft and hard top and it's awesome. I carry my kayaks or my roof top tent. I have also used it to carry mattresses, Christmas trees, plywood, you name it it's been on my rack. I even set up lawn chairs to watch the fireworks on the 4th of July. You're mounting something wrong because my is solid as a rock even at highway speeds. I paid 1500 USD with ladder and wind deflector. The deflector is not great and I drive without it. You don't necessarily need to buy Gobi accessories to add stuff to it. The only Gobi accessory I bought was the quick release and it works great. I have added Hi lift jack, extra lights front and rear, rotopax, shovels, awning etc all without buying Gobi accessories. I overland all the time on decent trails and never had issues with this rack. Sometimes I even run without the rack because it takes no effort with my hoist set up in my garage. And, btw, anything you add to the roof of your Jeep is always going to make some noise. Also, I think it's the best looking rack out there. It mounts close to the body and doesn't look out of place and bulky like some cheaper racks. And no drilling!

@Will V do you leave the rack on 365/All the time? I'm a new wrangler owner (first time owner) and I just placed my order with Gobi - not sure I can keep mine on all the time due to height limitation in the garage but curious if you just leave yours on all the time.
@willv78682 жыл бұрын
@@ryanaugustus I leave it on all winter but in the summer I tend to take it off and on depending on my mood or when I'm carrying something. So what you're saying is that you dropped $3K on a POS... increased wind-noise, unstable when off-road, will wear out or damage the soft top, losing functionality as you can't remove the window panels as easily, plus you want to add accessories like lights, attachment points for other items (further increasing the weight on the rack) Dude, send that thing back!

I had a Gobi rack on my previous Jeep ... a JK. The rack was very sturdy, but I never got the value out of it. Meaning that I only loaded cargo up top about 3-4 times. Having a 4-door Jeep; I can’t imagine a true need for more cargo space, unless going away from home base for more than 5 days. It sunk-in after a full Summer or 3-4 day trips where I could manage with organized packing in the cargo area. If I had to do it again, I’d do a Yakima setup with cargo box or Garvin at a fraction of the price to accomplish the same cargo volume.

Something you could maybe try (kinda obnoxious to have to modify a 3k product), would be to add some bracing from the side bars up to the rack in a few spots, looks like there's room to tuck one in at a shallow angle above the roof towards the inboard of the basket (if that makes any sense). The shifting around is because there's zero racking strength in that design. There's no lateral support to keep it from wanting to essentially "tip over" like a house of cards. You're right to be concerned about long term fatigue. Even with a hard top, the fact that they rely on some little rubber stoppers butted against the fibreglass top for lateral stability in a roof rack is a bit cheezy.
@johnlewis26243 жыл бұрын

3k for the rack but they make spend more for rubber strips and such to stop the buffeting. If you have a soft top by the time you make it functional for a soft top you approaching 5k. If you say your able to work with a soft top I shouldn't need to spend another 2k give or take. Extra cost for mounts I get but not basic stuff to make it function. After seeing your video I wouldn't touch this product. Great video though. Saved everyone at least 3k.
@brucesinclair96283 жыл бұрын
Ahhh Casey I can see the disappointment in your delivery, it sucks when you have certain expectations with something and it doesn't match. The suggestion of the pool noodles is a great one, one of the guys in Edmonton has done that and it does help. Just make sure that they are secured on the bar well or they will fly off at highway speeds. The one other thing to remember is the weight rating, if I'm not wrong the stabilizers are part of that dynamic weight, also the off road weight is different as well due to the flexing and off angle torquing. There has been some talk about that lately, maybe it is time to look at a hardtop ?? But then there might be some better options with the hard top... Great review and honest thoughts Casey just one of the many reasons you have a good following, peace.

Thanks. I have since added pipe insulation to the cross bars which helps the buffeting. I think the biggest frustrating is a product with a description to be used with a soft top, product material, and demo videos and then has unexpected performance. Another thing to add that I didn't see in the video and comments, is Gobi's lead time. I've been reading somewhere near 6 months after ordering before receiving it. I still want one for my Jeep. Like you, I'm guessing, I bought my JKUR new but it was a soft top only. I lucked up and found a hard top someone was selling that came off a 2017, so who knows, maybe you can luck up like I did. As for the wind deflector, if you decide to put it back on, I'd put something protective between it and your Jeep's paint. There's another Overlander KZbinr (can't remember his name) that did a video where the Gobi rack on his WK2 grand Cherokee starting eating away at his paint because of the wind deflector.

I was paranoid about the rattling but honestly I think you will always have some noise. I do routinely inspect the rack, which is their recommendation. Would like to see a Gobi install video, I think that will give a lot of people some reassurance with the install. @Casey2503 жыл бұрын
I think it really depends. A good quick setup tent can go a long way. We aren't going out camping when we go out. We are exploring and adventuring and having the capability to setup for the night anywhere in any condition is a huge asset. We also camp year round in all kinds of weather. Terrain is not usually optimal, last week we camped on a boulder filled beach, we roll in when it's dark out, and I'm setup in 1 or 2 minutes in any weather. There is also a ton of wild life from wolves to bears which being 7ft in the air give you a bit of peace of mind. Lastly and what I consider the most important to me, is getting a good night sleep. It's dry, dark walls, lighting inside, and has a nice mattress. When I head out for several days, it can be long days of wheeling, recovering vehicles, and filming a video and keeping energy up to talk to the camera and get shots (which can be exhausting) and getting good sleep and a place to retreat to for some downtime in the evening is vital for me to make videos on a regular basis. There are some great tent solutions out there and situations I'd consider them just as good, but for me, in this region, and the adventures we go on, this is a game changer for me.

Gobi customer support is useless. I truly hope they gave that to you as a freebie hoping you would flog it. Best place for it: metal recycle station at the local dump.

Should of gotten the hardtop, the soft top gets ratty pretty quickly, and bubbles up when going down the road. Plastic "glass" gets hazzy and cant see shit out of it

Your probably right but I love soft tops. The goal of this build has changed a lot over the last year though.

@@Casey250 I hear ya brother, i love yall's rigs and the adventures yall go on, I'm really interested in the 4runner and how it does with all your jeep rigs up there.

That is such a waste of money. I build same design basically for my CJ out of muffler pipe and flat steel. Connected to the front pillars and rear tire stop. Bought one more for other side. Carried my 14 ft boat. Never flexed never moved. $500.00 Gobi/ Gobiage

Roof top tents are slowly becoming the taint of overlanding. So many trails people have ruined or had to turn around due to being to tall.

But the question is ..... would you spend $3000 again on your Gobie roof rack?
@Casey2503 жыл бұрын
I would buy a hard top and a rhino rack back bone, or I want to see about metal cloaks new rack they just released. After hearing everyone's wait times to get a Gobi rack and their stories with customer see service, I am not sure I'd put this rack at the top of the list of ways to mounts a roof top tent or cargo to your Jeep.

I think you put the wind screen in the wrong place

It's exactly as the instructions show. It seemed wrong to me too
@Nightcall643 жыл бұрын
False problem, think you have to buy a Hard top 3 piece and the wind noise wild be not a problem.

I have. It's another $3 or 4k

@@Casey250 damn that's alot for a hardtop. I got lucky when I bought my Jeep. I'm running a Frontrunner Slimline II rack.
