Avatar: The Last Airbender deserves better. If you want a higher quality image get the 20 dollar blu ray set don't buy the new Avatar The Last Airbender 15th anniversary steelbook. Thank. I cannot agree more with the notion that companies will do anything to get as much as your money as possible. I remember last June I saw the complete series of Adventure Time (~11 Seasons) on dvd for $90. Being the idiot that I was, I assumed that they probably wouldn't release the complete series on bluray, and bought the dvd set. They announced the Blu Ray set a few months later. And since I've watched AT on tv as child, I can immediately notice that the show IS SUPPOSED TO BE WATCHED IN HD, NOT SD. It was meant to be released on Blu Ray since it was made in HD. Fml.

At the very least, the DVD boxset has a really unique design full of great artwork and other stuff pertaining to Adventure Time, meanwhile the Bluray set is just another generic Bluray set with nothing unique about it. The only thing the DVD and Bluray boxes share is the front box artwork. Not sure why CN cheaped out on the Blurays but put so much effort into the DVDs.

Paramount Blu-Rays are region free, so yes the Avatar Blu-Ray sets you buy would be region free as well. But it's always best to have a region free Blu-Ray player or just rip the discs instead, cause both of those options bypass the region locking.

4:34 I wasn't allowed to watch Avatar the Last Airbender as a kid so I didn't get into it until I was already an adult. So I burst out laughing at this line here. To this day I don't know what my mom had against the show. At least Pokemon had evolution (it didn't have evolution in the Darwinian sense, but it still scared some Evangelical Karens out of letting their kids watch it), Dragon Ball Z Kai had violence and somewhat perverted jokes, and Total Drama Island had moments of censored nudity.

This rant has been bubbling inside me for years: So ATLA was animated by different studios. For some completely stupid reason, one studio made the episodes in ~24fps another in ~30fps. (Episodes 1 and 2 are in 24, episode 3 in 30, episode 4 in 24 again, episode 5 in 30 etc.) On the American DVD release, all episodes were put in 30fps (this is because DVD only supports one framerate (30 in NTSC, and 25 in PAL)). To do this they used a process called Telecine, where they basically doubled up some frames and merged them together, which sort of messed up the smoothness of some movements in the episodes that were originally animated at 24fps, but the episodes that were in 30fps looked just fine. Before the DVD came out I had spent quite a lot of time reversing the telecine process, making every episode play at its correct framerate. When the Blu-ray came out I was very excited, because Blu-ray could support putting every episode at the correct framerate. What they did instead (which is a million times worse than what the DVD did) it put every episode at 24fps! So the episodes that were originally at 24fps look fine on Blu-ray, but for all the episodes that were 30fps, the movement is royally screwed and I can't fix it because the frames needed to do this just aren't there. It's most noticable in shots where the camera does a panning motion. One that was smooth on the DVD but is completely jittery on the Blu-Ray. I just needed to get that out of my system. For some reason nobody else seems to have noticed.

The PAL version has messed up colours (I live in PAL territory myself, I imported the NTSC DVD from the US to get the best version, and the Blu-ray has never even been released here, so I had to import that as well). The best option is to alternate between the blu-ray and NTSC-dvd, based on whether the specific episode was originally animated at 24 or 30fps.

The worst parts about the European DVD releases of ATLA is the lack of lots of the special features and the lack of the bonus discs present in the American box sets. Also, the name was changed to The Legend Of Aang (which still sounds very cool tbh). I recently got the 3 sets altogether for about £11 pre-owned so the exclusion of special features doesn't really bother me. At least there's still the Super Deformed Shorts and the same menus so I'd just buy either the American DVDs or look for a good deal on the standard Blu-ray set if I wanted the special features.

The Blu-Rays do look considerably better than the DVDs, but the first few episodes are kind of a miss. If you do want to get it on Blu-Ray, get the TLA and Korra complete series set instead. It comes with the Blu-Ray discs and cases for both series and it's cheaper than the TLA steelbook. (Random link to show you which product I'm talking about. Like David said, technically, the Blu-Ray is higher resolution. That said, I’ve also discussed it with another person and apparently (because Avatar was animated by two separate studios there’s frame rate issues on the Blu-Rays every other episode. Because they tried to fix the frame rate? I guess. Netflix looks even worse. Tbh, I’m super biased towards the DVD sets. Of you can find them at a thrift store, half price books, or cheap on Amazon I recommend them. Of course I don’t think you can go wrong with the standard Blu Ray. It’s not *THAT* bad. I exaggerate a lot. And besides, the first two episodes only look awful on the DVDs. The Blu Ray quality is fine. It’s just, if you’re gonna be a collector. Get DVDs. If not, standard Blu Ray. Just don’t spend $90+ on the steelbook. That’s all.

Hey I searched up reviews for the atla steelbook to see what people think about it. I understand its very expensive and you shouldnt buy it just cause it looks nice, if you already have the show. But I don’t have the show and want it on bluray. Only one copy of it would be great, and would be nice for that one copy to be special in a way. Good video. Back when the ATLA steelbook came out I got the TLA+Korra collection for like $40 less. The Korra Blu-Ray brings back animated menus, but the discs themselves are still the boring blue discs with the name of the series on it.

This video was a response to an (at the time) perceivable perception that this version was more complete than other releases currently available. I probably wouldn’t make something so petty today. It’s the product of a swift production schedule that honestly necessitates a response in the week/month it was posted. I also fully expected it to fly under the radar and get zero views. But people keep finding it somehow so, there it is. While I have you here, though let me bend your ear a bit: *I’m actually not mad. Whether or not I intended to, this video has a tone that’s largely exaggerated beyond what is normal. I make one or two okay points but a lot of dumb ones as a result of my tunnel-vision for getting this out.* That said, I also hate the attitude of “let people enjoy things” if you’re so dead-set on enjoying something I can’t stop you. Was looking up the ATLA Blu-Ray wondering if it'd look better than it does on Netflix. My TV didn't show that they updated it to HD, i.E not really HD but upscaled and prolly looking 1:1 like it would on the 90$ Blu-Ray set. The menus and discs looking shit is the icing on the cake. This was a good-ass video my man. Definite Nakey-Jakey vibes but not in a copycat way. Distinct enough given the subject matter. I did play around with video upscaling a bit before so it could very well just be some artifacting resulting from that maybe dunno Funny thing, it doesn't cost 30$ here in Germany, it costs 65€ for the one you're waving around in the video and 100€ for a "limited edition". If you don't know how to convert euro to dollars, just add a couple dollars to those numbers and there ya go I mean, I'm broke atm anyway and even if I wasn't I sure as shit wouldn't spend that much on a Blu-Ray when I'm pretty sure I wouldn't notice a difference in Quality My gf who I'm introducing it to even less so, she's had no real complaints with the video quality And if I was to spend some moola on a cartoon Blu-Ray id prolly go for the Ren and stimpy Blu-Ray cause I've been eyeing that one for a while and it's like 20 bucks compared to this shit Anyway I'm rambling, I wish you the best of luck with making more vids. bought the steelbooks around the time they came out for about 70 dollars but, was disappointed that they got rid of the animated menus for the awkwardly designed silent bluray menu (its just... horrendous in comparison) While i LOVE the art for the books its just... not worth it when the only difference is the Book 1 episodes dont have the double lines 💔 They should've just sold the steelbooks seperately (and cheaper) for people to buy and put their disks in, since the artwork is the only good thing here and not for the price

To add to your point all vfx are rendered in 1080p. Three fourths of the 4K releases are straight up cash grabs. Case and point there's no point shooting a marvel film in 3.5k with an Aria Alexa mini then downscale to 2k for rendering VFX. Fun fact: movie theaters project at 1080p. 3D TVs died due to people not wanting to upgrage their TVs less than 5 years after the roll-out of Blu-ray. Active 3D glasses made it even worse. Nobody wants to spend an extra 150 quid on a pair of glasses. The true benefit to Blu-ray is audio. Provided somebody actually has a surround system to actually use. PS I've yet to buy a TV in 20 years thanks to hand me downs. But if passive 3D makes a comeback, bet your ass I'll pick one up. 😆

@@YOUFREAKINNERDPeople in the vfx industry have gotten spoiled beyond belief. I seem to recall hearing that WETAs render time on one LotR shot was something like four days. I find it a true shame that studios don't use practical effects at all anymore. John Wick is a fine example of a film which could be 80% practical but it's somehow easier to do a digital shot than use a blood pack. I'd like to see a breakdown of how cost effective the use of miniatures would be as opposed to a 3D environment. 🤷 I actually have to explain aspect ratios to people when I Uber to this day! Not everybody understands that the scope of a film is decided by the film maker. Original academy ratio (1.33:1) is what became standard "fullscreen". IMAX 70mm has a 1.44:1 ratio. So it drives me nuts seeing a Chris Nolan film cropped to 16:9. Side note that all IMAX screens have 1.90:1 screens. A format some marvel films have used to their best potential while cropping the film to 2.40:1 for theatrical viewing. (Only available on 3D BD disks but they're extinct technology.) 🙁

Having my fiance' watch it for the first time, and seeing those menu animations and the music score playing B E A utiful!! It's little things like that which really show effort, love, and care went into making those DVDs. Now a days you could chuck most your blu rays on the floor and wouldn't know which one is which just at a first glance. However I digress, you gave me a lot of thought provoking ideas to think about when it comes to purchasing blu rays, so many thanks. Terrible take. Good for some, though. Collector value, get what you want. Things "looking nice" is exactly what makes them valuable. You set your own value that you place in items individually. As a collector of anime blu-rays and manga, I highly value steelbooks and other blurays. I don't care if it just "looks and feels nicer." That's WHY I'm buying it. Because it looks and feels nicer. Also: there is such a thing as a "pop-up menu" where you do not have to go back to the main menu to change your language. I don't want to attack you, but I feel like you don't have enough tangible experience with Funimation as a bluray production company. You can disable subtitles whilst still using Japanese audio for almost all recent bluray releases.

I don’t take it as an “attack” so don’t worry about it. (Your more mild-mannered than most, chief.) And yeah, I should have led with “this is my opinion” but there’s definitely some exaggerations for the sake of comedy here. But more than anything I don’t like putting a big obnoxious disclaimer in front of all my videos telling people they’re allowed to disagree. If you disagree, go for it! You do you! And there’s a lot of information I learned after the fact that (had I known) would have been in the video. For example, per another thread in this comment section: A:TLA being animated at two separate studios meant there were some episodes with 30 frames per second, some with 24. On one DVD release they locked all the episodes down to 24fps (If I remember right) and on the more recent they locked it down to 30fps. Most people probably wouldn’t notice but a lot of people would. So that’s something worth considering. Had I known that, I’d have included it. And on the Funimation angle? I don’t think they’re perfect by any means. And not all Blu-Ray releases from them are created equal. I know on *several* that I’ve purchased they were hard-subbed. And that’s annoying. Maybe that changed recently. And maybe they were a bad example of being “anti-consumer”. Though, tbh, it’s Funimation. Idk if it’s really all that “unfair” to call this particular company anti-consumer given their track record. But hey, if that’s your opinion. That’s your opinion. And I also don’t often use the pop-up menu. So, crucify me for that. Idc. I just know that my Brohood blu-rays were a bit of a letdown as well as some others (Sword of The Stranger, GiTS) which included (among other things) un-skippable trailers at the start of the blu-Ray. Which is just, *really scummy* IMO.

I've actually never been restricted from skipping the trailers at the beginning of blurays as I use my "top menu" button, but maybe I just haven't had experience with the ones that you're referring to. I don't think it's incorrect to call Funimation an anti-consumer company. To be perfectly honest, Crunchyroll is almost as bad. The only streaming service and bluray publisher that I'd say is close to being objectively "good" is Sentai Filmworks and Hidive. though Hidive has a way to go before it can reach the heights that are seen with Funimation and Crunchyroll. That's streaming, though, so not entirely relevant.

Yeah that whole “un-skippable AD” thing was specifically on (I think) “Sword of The Stranger” and “Ghost in the shell 2: Innocence” it was one of those and in that case the “top menu” button and skip buttons were disabled. But yeah, there’s a lot to talk about with regards to this stuff. And this video, while a cut better than I’ve done before, certainly leaves something to be desired. And you’re welcome. I kind of thought I might have pushed too hard in my response. Glad it didn’t put you off. One of the upsides of having a tiny platform and a large distance between uploads is that I really do get to respond to every comment.
