'Fromsoft is proof that trying to over appeal to the mainstream is not good for the long term health of studios, because instead of trying to make something unique and good, you're trying to chase trends, and then trying to make that good. Fromsoft made games that went against the grain of the majority of the industry, focusing on art direction over graphics, discovery over waypoints, difficulty over hand holding, world building over exposition, and refining the gameplay but never resting on their laurels. They didn't chase massive success, but rather stayed committed to their craft and honing it with each entry building a devoted following that grew with each entry. Elden Ring is the massive success it is because Fromsoft has not tried to take advantage of their fans goodwill, they always try to do better and surprise their players. They're not a perfect studio, not that there is one anywhere, but where they excel is in doing right by their fans and players and prioritizing a fulfilling experience for players above all else. If Sony buys them, and tries to influence the direction of their games or pricing model, then they're already devaluing the studio by trying to take advantage of their reputation for ill gotten gains ☺☺

From Soft is absolutely the most respected game studio right now. They haven't put out a bad game over the last decade, and three of their games during this span - DS1, Bloodborne, Elden Ring - are regularly included in greatest games of all time discussions. That's incredible. And what's amazing is that From has achieved this massive critical and financial success with games that make absolutely no concessions to players or corporate interests. They know that they alienate a lot of people by making their games so difficult and vague, and they're fine with that because they decided long ago that making a singularly-focused experience that will be literally life-changing for a certain type of gamer was a much better use of their time than trying to make a game that didn't truly resonate with anyone because it was made to appeal to everyone. The AAA developers NEED to learn this lesson - making games by committee does not work. When the driving force behind a game's development is a list sent over by the marketing team entitled "Content and features most associated with in-game spending among 18-24 year-olds", the resulting game is a soulless commodity. The game itself, and more specifically the experience of playing it, has to be the top priority. But with the exception of From Soft ( and of course a lot of indies), that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. Hopefully that changes, and I'm optimistic it will after some of the recent disasters like Concord and Veilguard.

One thing I love about Miyazaki is that he knows when to quit. He did not want to make Ds2 and only made 3 to wrap up the series. He pivoted to bloodbourne instead of making Ds2 and then pivoted to Sekiro instead of making Ds4, pivoted to AC6 instead of Sekiro 2, then Elden Ring as a new Ip. Then Miyazaki says he won’t make another ER game and want to work on smaller projects. If Sony get their paws on more of FROM, I see Ds4-10 coming in the near future. They are nothing but greedy.

I think its also important to note that at 2:00 the grace period thing was actually on the devs, they admitted it too. They had trouble getting PSN connectivity to work without errors so they just removed it and removed the warning that you needed a PSN account. Comparative monopolies I believe it is called is when the monopoly provides a service that no direct competitors can match. It is why Sony and its competitors are permitted to exist, they provide a service unmatched by any other corporation Unfortunately this monopoly is a very fine line to cross, google was once considered one but now they are facing a federal lawsuit for unfair monopolizing of search engines. Fromsoft is proof that trying to over appeal to the mainstream is not good for the long term health of studios, because instead of trying to make something unique and good, you're trying to chase trends, and then trying to make that good. Fromsoft made games that went against the grain of the majority of the industry, focusing on art direction over graphics, discovery over waypoints, difficulty over hand holding, world building over exposition, and refining the gameplay but never resting on their laurels. They didn't chase massive success, but rather stayed committed to their craft and honing it with each entry building a devoted following that grew with each entry. Elden Ring is the massive success it is because Fromsoft has not tried to take advantage of their fans goodwill, they always try to do better and surprise their players. They're not a perfect studio, not that there is one anywhere, but where they excel is in doing right by their fans and players and prioritizing a fulfilling experience for players above all else. If Sony buys them, and tries to influence the direction of their games or pricing model, then they're already devaluing the studio by trying to take advantage of their reputation for ill gotten gains.

Just to clarify for anyone who doesn't have a good understanding of how Sony actually operates as a company since I've seen a bunch of people that seem to be under the impression the Sony we know in America is the one in charge of everything. The Sony we know that moved to America is specifically Sony Interactive Entertainment (Who I will refer to as Sony Games because it's easier), they are the ones who handle the Playstation and Sony's first and second party video game development (Astro Bot, Concord, Helldivers, ETC), and that's basically it, they are a comparatively small portion of the larger Sony conglomerate and are the only ones who have moved to America, all of the other divisions are still in Tokyo to my knowledge. The Sony that owns anime studios like Aniplex, A1 and Cloverworks is Sony Music, which is still Japan based, is bigger then Sony Games, and has already had a good stake in the anime industry for a long time, if you watch anime and ever wondered why so many end credits have a thanks for Sony Entertainment in them that's why, Sony Entertainment (without the "Interactive") refers to the group that has Sony Music and Pictures and owns a large amount of record labels over there so quite alot of anime openings and endings are partially owned by them. This article at least from what you've shown doesn't seem to clarify exactly which branch of Sony is looking to buy it and appears tunnel visioned on it being Sony Games due to them owning Elden Ring, but in my opinion it seems more likely it's probably Sony Music who handle most of their anime-related productions and have long since stopped being just a music division (for example they're actually the ones partnered with Palworld and are possibly about to fight Nintendo in court, not Sony Games, and also own pretty much all of Sony's mobile games like Fate Grand Order and Magia Record) as they are the branch that owns A1, Cloverworks, and Aniplex (And by extension Crunchyroll, although they don't seem to like them very much considering they don't or at least didn't used to let them do the subs or dubs for big ticket shows like Fate or Love is War and instead do it in-house) so merging Kadokawa in would be way easier and more efficient then trying to have the Games division take over. And before anyone tries to say "But Sony killed their Japanese branch" because I have actually seen people try to say that, they did not, they killed "Studio Japan" which was the name of a specific subsidiary of Sony Games, saying Sony Games killed Sony Japan is like saying "the guys who manufacture Kindles just dissolved Amazon and fired Jeff Bezos", that's not how it works, I understand why people are concerned but until more specifics come out about how this is going to work the people claiming this is the end times need to calm down and take a breath. If they're put directly under Sony Music which is the more likely outcome then it's probably fine, and given Sony Games' repeated fuck ups over the last few years I REALLY don't see the Old Japanese CEOs letting them take control of Kadokawa considering that even when they buy American companies they still usually don't put them under Sony Games and will instead put it under a different subsidiary that still reports to one of the JP branches. TL;DR, This is a "wait and see" moment not an "It's all over" moment because it might not be the Sony most people are familiar with doing the purchasing, and if it's not then there will likely not be any noticeable changes, at least not for a while, and despite common beliefs most of Sony outside of Playstation is still a Japanese company
