I recently stopped my production in the middle of a live event due to this ONE FLAW on the X32. I am a huge proponent of recording multitracks from rehearsals or live events to have for later review and practice. As you watch this video, keep in mind that even professionals make mistakes. Learn from my errors and get better along the way.

Thank you for all of your X32 video's!! I made it through my first 4 hour live show last night running sound for my husbands Judas Priest cover band . Prior to watching your videos I had zero knowledge of sound engineering or music knowledge beyond listening. With only 4 practices and your video's before the first show, I didn't do to bad. =) I only tackled the basics so far but it was just enough to eek my way through. Thank you so much!!

Well, yes, but there's one more I've experienced, and this may or may not have been addressed with firmware updates. If you ever record on USB stick in the front of the console, beware: If the stick gets full, the console locks up and requires a restart to free it up again. Not removing the stick, not trying to stop recording. The console simply becomes unresponsive, You're welcome.

The Midas has a different USB card that has an onboard SD card reader. This triggers an extra feature for auto-switching of inputs when you use the record tool. This issue makes sense on that setup as it is an extra feature, but mine doesn’t have it which made the situation really odd.

That must have been an awful awkward moment….wow…. I have the compact version and recently purchased the s16 .. I was excited to connect it and start using it. I connected 2 overhead mics and 2 inputs for my electronic drums and. Set the gains in the middle. I got sound from the x32 console from the monitors but can’t seem to get sound from the headphone amp I connected to the S16 xlr out .. another thing is I tried the headphone input on the S16 and could not get sound from that as well. Is there a solution for this that you might know?
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it was an odd moment, but we got through it and learned. Congrats on the S16, this is a great tool to add into your system. It will take a few changes in the routing screen of the console to get everything working properly. Assuming you have the S16 connected across AES50a you will want to go into Routing > AES50a and set your desired outputs. Keeping in mind you have 8 outputs on the S16 you will want to decide which 8 you are sending to that device. You can either send a block of 8 outputs or use the custom User Outs to setup a unique solution. If you want to send BUS 1 and 2 as monitors you can just select the Out 1-8 to go across AES50a 1-8 and then they will match up 1 to 1 on the device meaning MixBUS 1 will come out XLR out 1 on the S16. However if you are using outputs 1-8 on the X32 Compact already and you are just adding 8 more outputs with the S16 you will want to set AES50a 1-8 to be sourced by Out 9-16. I hope this helps. I might try and make a video about this nw that I have a compact in my studio.

Haven't experienced this exact issue yet, mainly because the church where I do sound only recently upgraded to M32R. However a couple weeks back I had a scary moment when the live stream went silent right after the worship. It took me a while to inspect all the various points on the signal path from source to destination only to find that OBS has silently switched it's input from the M32 USB input to the computer's built in sound card. I still have no idea why. Listening back to the recording I hear the sound stutter right before failing, so ... I don't know... driver issue maybe :-/

I'd solo them up on the headphones and they sounded great, but they couldn't be assigned, even directly to the L/R Main mix. @AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 жыл бұрын
The USB output (by default) taps right after the gain and sends into your DAW. It will not grab any of the channel strip so that you can do a virtual soundcheck and not muddy the waters by possibly double-EQing or something like that. Depending on how many channels you're recording multitrack there is a way to use the P16 trick to get the channel strip activated for multitracking, but you are limited to 16 channels (video below). If you want to record the onboard reverbs or delays you need to do some thinking about your configuration and what exactly you are needing to record. All of this is assuming you are just multitracking and not trying to record a final mix from the board into the DAW. P16 Trick Video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHuvi6qaZa-Fn5o

How can I record 32 channels and still use the usb to play Spotify and send a live feed to Facebook live? When I switch the usb config to 32 i32o from 2i2o I loose Spotify and the stream output. I have the xlive card and would like rot record via sd card and not a daw if possible.
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 жыл бұрын
To use all (most) of these features you will need to leave the card set to 32/32. Your computer (playing Spotify) will be entering the console on USB 1/2 so you will want to make sure you have that routed to the correct faders (or AUX in) and this might require some custom setup in the USER IN section. in terms of multitrack recording you just need to setup the Routing > Card area to have the desired inputs being captured via the card. The last sentence of your comment was a little confusing... "I have the xlive card and would like rot record via sd card and not a daw if possible." so I'm not exactly sure which route you are looking to go. If you want to record into a DAW with USB, it will be a standard 32 input mapping. If you are looking to record on the SD side you should be able to hit record on the screen of the console and it should function properly for the 32 multitracks. I have helped a few people remotely with the Xlive card, but have never had one myself to play with all the different features. I hope this helps you out.

When you say ‘not even’ do you mean the left side is different from the right? If so, this means you have some inputs panned to one side or the other and could put everything back in the middle using the pan knob. If I am misunderstanding your question, please reals and try to explain differently.

Is it possible that the console was using the input signals from the DAW as they were passing through each DAW channel? Like a “monitor out” of the DAW channel. So the console was actually in a virtual sound check setting and receiving from the DAW the whole service up until the time its source went away. Kinda hard to explain, but, each stage source was hitting the DAW directly, then passing through each DAW channel to the console on the appropriate channel.
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 8 ай бұрын
I wish that was the case, but it was just a random glitch that switched my input settings. It is a feature in the X-live card and M32 and I feel like it was something in the firmware that caused a switch.

If you look at the routing screen - there is a Play and a Record option (right knob). If that is the flip that it did, I bet you were running the scene in Record mode and somehow it flipped modes to Play since it has nothing to record to. I try to never use anything but Play mode in the routing just to be sure. I will record on the USB while in Play mode which is fine. I thought that someone held the Home button down too long and locked the board and didn't know how to get out :)

The short answer is to low cut most instruments and vocals (except your kick drum and bass) between 90-150hz. That being said, it is situational so for keys I will stay around 120 if I have a bassist on stage, but will go down to 50hz if they are the only low-end producing instrument. Vocals are also specific to each person and situation. This video here goes through my vocal settings with on/off examples so you can hear the differences. I seen when playing back from a DAW (for me it was tracks live) and recording to USB drive to share the recording from a remixing to be used for post-editing of a video, where the X32 would freeze and audio is still coming out but none of the controls on the mixer didn’t work. Also, about the switching from rec to play modes, if you look at the channel strip it will show under the channel number a C, which means it’s set to get audio or input from the card if it say A or B meaning it’s input is set to AES50 A or B port, just something to be looking for if something like that happens again, but really hope it doesn’t, tho!

You are not able to stack inserted plugins on the console. The way I do it is run my de-easer on the channel and then send that input (or a few inputs) to a MixBUS and insert the compressor there. Check to make sure your routing > card screen matches your Routing > Inout tab (while in the REC setting). This will ensure all your inputs are being sent out the card to your DAW. If this is accurate, make sure your outputs on your DAW are set properly to send to the correct channels on the board. Finally, confirm your Routing > Inputs are mapped properly on the PLAY setting for those tracks to come back from your DAW.

Like sequence of power initiation(the interface needs to be turned on before the computer exc) Many buggy issues especially dealing with input and output values can happen between your interface and DAW. The console acting as an interface in this case. Not really a flaw with the console but more an inconvenient time to learn about a tiny nuance regarding i/o setup. I know this video is a little older, but for anyone coming across it like I did just now, this sounds like it might be a bug with the card settings. SETUP > CARD > CHANNEL ROUTING. There are three options under the Channel Routing header on the CARD page under SETUP; "Recording", "Playback", or "Automatic". This sounds like the board might have had an odd response to the "Automatic" setting, which is supposed to allow the board to know when you want your inputs selected vs. when you want playback from the card (SD or USB input on the card) selected. Shouldn't happen that way of course, but we all know how that goes! As a best practice, I think I'll never select "Automatic" again, set the Channel Routing option to "Recording", and then just manually select "Record" or "Playback" on the ROUTING menu when I actually want to flip sources. Thanks for pointing out this potential issue! I'll definitely keep this in the back of my mind for any troubleshooting moving forward. So odd, wouldn't have thought of it otherwise!

The use case is this; one of my singers moves the mic back and forth between their mouth and chest, depending on whether they're singing a solo verse or a chorus. Adjusting the fader to compensate for the distance difference between every verse and chorus seems like a less efficient method. I would like to be able to set it to a certain position at chest level and have a limiter keep it from being way too loud when at mouth level. I supposed this would be easier than trying break a habit of 20+ years. I should mention I've had this board the better part of a month and have no prior mixing experience, just a mind to learn and work😅

Thanks for reaching out. This method is kind of a "level 2" of using this board, but certainly not a crazy request. The process would be similar to adding it to a MixBUS (more common usage of the limiter), but applied to an individual input. You will set the effect in one of the FX racks 5-8, set the input channel on the selector and then push the "INS" button to turn on the insert. You may want to check the channel strip order to make sure this limiter is the last item in your chain (after the onboard EQ and compressor). Keep in mind that this limiter will begin to "pump" and add some artifacts when it is hit too hard so you might look at doing some strong compression on the channel strip and maybe adding another compressor afterwards instead of a limiter. I do this technique and you can watch this video here to see my settings and approach on all of my vocal channels. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2bbqn2OltGcg8k

Cool video. answer: there’s a setting in the (card?) menu for either Playback, record or auto. Maybe you have it set to auto? QUESTION: Like you said. I like the drum sound the midas board has a lot. Can you explain the routing of taking 8 drum tracks recorded elsewhere and: 1- send out 8 auxes from DAW 2- physically hook aux outs to 8 channels going into the mixer 3- then recording that back into 8 (or more with separate effects) new channels in the DAW I want that Midas sound on those drums. Thanks!
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 жыл бұрын
For my issue, I do not have an "auto" feature that I could change like the Midas has with the SD Card. That's what makes this scenario so confusing. For your question, I am unclear with step 1. Are you trying to build AUX mixes in the DAW and send them to monitors? or are you trying to build AUX mixes that pair with step 2 that route back into the console? Although it might be a bit to type, maybe you can send me what you are trying to accomplish and I can help you with the routing options. If it is easier (outside of YT comments) you can catch me using the contact on my website at sound.allamhouse.com

@@AllamHouse thanks! maybe the term is re-record? re-amp? I'm just trying to take 8ch of drums and route them out of the M32R (aux outs) and loop them physically back into the board through the mic pres (using 1/4" to xlr cables). I am trying to playback tracks from my DAW and record them back onto my DAW at the same time. I am hoping to take some already recorded drum tracks and add the Midas pre amp sound to them. maybe use a little EQ and compression on the way back in too.
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 жыл бұрын
I see. Yeah, you would need to route the initial 8 channels into individual busses which would allow them to be sent individually out XLR outputs on the back of the console and then back into the desk to other input channels. Make sure you de-select these busses from the Main Stereo LR Bus so you do not create some crazy feedback loop. Everything else would be pretty straight forward for sending tracks to/from a DAW.

Wonder if you could help me out with some routing on an X32? I just started doing the sound at the church. I am pretty familiar with mixers as I record a lot of music. Not so much on live sound. We have a lady on piano> I call her Jerry Lee(not to her face). She is what I call> way heavy handed. I feel like I'm in a honky tonk bar sometimes. Anyway they mike the piano to send the piano sound to a you tube feed with video. The piano in the sanctuary needs no volume thru the sound system as it is generally too loud. They have the mike for the audio to the you tube feed. How can I route the audio from the piano to the output going to a laptop computer with the you tube feed without sending it thru the church sound system? I assume I would maybe use a dca to send the output to the computer? Any button pushing help would be appreciated, Thanks

First thing I would do is make sure your live stream audio is setup on a MixBUS so you can have a separate mix for your house and stream. The video below shows how to do this. I personally use a Post-Fader MixBUS setup so that my engineers only have to get things setup and then mix the house which will in turn alter the stream as well. Next: Select your piano channel and go to the left of the screen and find the button called "Stereo LR Bus" and make sure it is NOT orange. This will make sure the channel does not go into your house mix. Then set the fader to unity (0) Finally: Put on some headphones, solo your live stream MixBUS and add in the piano to your stream according to your desired mix. Suggested Videos: (1) Setup a MixBUS for your stream - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKmXeZ13p7mYkKs (2) Advanced Mix for Stream - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pn7RkpyreJpoiLs

The X32 recording interface firmware is defective to the point where it represents an unacceptable risk to live performance reliability. I have seen X32's go dark and reboot in reaction to plugging in a USB drive that wasn't formatted the way the X32 expects. The problem is not that the X32 requires a certain format to work compatibly with a USB peripheral, but that its internal USB driver is so unstable it crashes the whole console when it encounters something it doesn't understand.

I actually had a similar issue at a church I was doing some contracted work for and everything was fine during the first 45 minutes and then things started popping. Yeah this console upgrade is going to be great once you get the basics figured out. In terms of recording you have two basic options. 1) format a thumb drive to Fat32 and put it in the USB slot on the front of the console. Hit the view button next to it and on the screen hit the record button. When done, make sure to hit the stop button to render the file. If you don’t hit stop or remove the thumb drive your file will be corrupt and unusable. 2) setup a laptop with a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) and record multitracks and/or your mix to the computer. This will allow you to post-produce your audio and then send it to a CD or any other digital form you might want. This video discusses multitracking. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYHVkpqQlN1qg7M

I do not have a Behringer X32 console at home, but I learned something from your video about routing. If I go into routing section, by default the routing is set for the following: Record: Channel/Source: Channel 1-8/Local 1-8 Channel 9-16/Local 9-16 Channel 17-24/Local 17-24 Channel 25-32/Local 25-32 Play: Channel 1-8/Card 1-8 Channel 9-16/Card 9-16 Channel 17-24/Card 17-24 Channel 25-32/Card 25-32 Below the main routing section, after the "Aux In Remap," there is a Record and Play radio buttons. Whatever the radio buttons selected is highlighted in orange. I have selected the Play button and the selections below the Card section are in orange. If I select Record, the Local section is in orange indicating to me that I can route the inputs. Once I'm in Play section, I can route the inputs to Local instead of Card. Using a Behringer X32 Editor, I feel like I am learning about how to use Behringer X32, yet I do not have an X32 console. Hopefully when I get a high-paying job, perhaps one day I can afford to buy an X32 console. And just playing with the editor makes me drool and I love it. Seemed the logical way to go, as I use a Dante playback computer as well. + adding any other musician with daw, dante license on their computer, then when say you have 32ch wet signals from mixer, you can add the dry from theirs direct, do 48 or 64ch rec in via dante... :)

Yeah, Dante is a really nice upgrade for sure. Thanks for the extra insight on the flexibility as I’m hoping to move to Dante later in 2022.

If you have the card setting to Auto inputs, that can happen. Switch it to manual mode.

Thanks for the heads up. I have the stock X-USB card and it doesn’t offer an “auto-switch” like the nicer SD card does.

@@AllamHouse I think the grouping, bus and routing knowlege would be the biggest challenge for me to hands on. M32 was kept in my shopping bag for months due to that I am still looking for a good tutorial video about how and when to set buses and how they route and split between the monitoring and recording. This old school type of mixing isn't like using DAW with hundreds kinds of plugings in post production. To live and record both in good quality is my coming goal... so much to learn haha. Good that you got them all together. No sound on stage is panicky man.... haha

i think the problem is not the X32, bit Studio one... Studio one deeply integrates with Presonus digital consoles, it could send a OSC command for switching record/playback routing. The X32 can receive this type of command: /config/routing/routswitch enum {REC, PLAY}: routing 0: Rec [default value] 1: Playback This command will automatically select the /config/routing/IN or the /config/routing/PLAY parameter blocks below, respective of the OSC parameter value [0] or [1]

I feel your pain. I've always thought behringer have been slightly over rated. They're still the only manufacturer to date, who makes a console, that mutes the channels, but still keeps the auxiliaries hot!

If Google Translate served me well, I believe you are trying to learn how to put FX into your monitors. If you are using a MixBUS for your monitor, you can select the monitor, hit Sends on Fader and then turn up the FX returns for the desired FX rack. In this video I discuss this idea (although for a livestream) at the 12:00 mark. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pn7RkpyreJpoiLs

But you made it through! That's why our sound is stagnant right now, because our pastor wants to make sure a Sunday isn't sabotaged by someone with sticky fingers, but if you make different scenes, they can do whatever they want and not mess with the one 8sed for Sundays...or they could even be able to make a better mix...
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if I were in your spot (or your location) I would setup to record multitracks. This allows you (or others) to push those tracks back through the console at a non-service time and work on the mix or live stream or even just practice changing things. You DO want to save your original scene and you can save a new scene to work on so you can flip quickly between the two. I always teach that you have to be willing to mess up in order to learn.

My M32 decided to reset a couple of times in the middle of the worship. I could never replicate this issue again. But I was doing mixing and noticed my fader wasn’t doing anything then the screen went weird. Then the console reset itself. I’ll never forget the pastor’s expression at me 😂

Sorry to hear that it messed up the production. But it might be possible that your card inputs were selected and that your DAW was in monitor mode, where it would send the input channel straight back to the output channel, so back into the console. When you closed your DAW this could have stopped the input monitoring and so the input signal on the console. I don’t really think that there would be a relationship between the USB connection and the input selection
@AllamHouse

Yeah, this is a good thought, but it actually changed my inputs from local to card. It was an odd scenario and it hasn’t come back in a long time.

How is it that the most of the teaching soundtech videos is about music of worschipping? Are you the only ones who care for the new techs or analog techs that want to go digital? It's like normal producers and FOH guys don't like to share.. And you guys share almost everything, many love to you guys. You do with knowledge what God intends with knowledge aka sharing is caring!💪👍♥️🙏

Thanks for the encouragement. There are a few channels out there that I’ve come across that share knowledge and are not worship related, but it is only 2-3. As an educator, I started the channel to help others and most folks (outside of the church) go through the grunt work of learning and long hours. The church tends to just find a willing person and ask them to help. I’m glad my videos have been helpful and I’m happy to help anyone that wants to learn. The music I tend to use is from my church, but ai’m a professional multi-instrumentalist as well so I play every genre, mostly just a love for music and people.

That's not what happened. your console inputs were set to the DAW and not whatever preamps you were using. You can patch it like this or you can have your console setup as if it's still running a virtual soundcheck. Basically, the console was passing audio through the computer as you were using it.
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 жыл бұрын
I’d have to look into it since I run the services the same every Sunday when I mix and running the inputs through the DAW would have added a bunch of latency that I would have noticed. I’m still not ruling it out as an option so thanks for the input.

@Show Logistics LLC - are you saying you can route your incoming preamps to your DAW and then route the DAW output back into the console thus getting the DAW sound through the board live?
@showlogisticsllc5109

@@BoHunter2010 Basicaly yes. It would add latency if you did that but it would work. That's essentialy what you're doing when you use a soundgrid server.
