I agree with a lot of things you said; however, I wouldn't discourage people from double majoring. I think people just have to be honest about why they are double majoring. If they are seeking that external validation, then they should reconsider. On the contrary, if they have a plan for how they are going to use that second major and are passionate about it, they should go for it.

I agree with this whole heartedly. I decided about halfway through college to add a second major, and I did so purely because I wanted to study that subject, and majoring in it was the only way I was going to be able to take all of those classes in it (as you had to be in the major to take those courses).

I think I understand what you mean. There are times when students push themselves for the wrong reasons or take classes they don't like because it is meant to boost their goal rather than a genuine interest. Personally I am considering double majoring because I appreciate the option to use philosophy if I want to step away from physics one day. So we should double (or triple) major if we are doing it for ourselves.

I love you how share about "external rewards." There is so much value in college and any educational setting for those that have built up their internal motivation. I often encourage students to double major if they are curious and want to dive into two different subjects. I strongly believe that studying two things enables creativity and innovation where they meet. Thank you for all that you do!

Fun to see a Carolina kid making KZbin videos, I'm an incoming Senior at UNC. I agree with a lot of what you said, but I think as long as things happen organically, there's no issues with double-majoring and minoring. I started with one major with no intentions of adding anything, and by the end of first year a second major and minor fell into place, partially because of gen-eds, partially because they fit together while fulfilling different academic interests, and partially because of marketable skills from each. I also think your advice is great for someone who has a set path after undergrad (like med school), but for those of us who aren't going to grad school right away, what we can show through the organized coursework of a major/minor is a particular skill set we have worked towards.

+Alaina C Well said! I need to make an update to this video haha, because as it turns out, I now do have a second major. But, I'm still glad I made it as a counterweight to some of the intense pressure to double major. There's nothing WRONG with it, it's just not required and not necessarily beneficial, is what I meant to say ultimately. Good luck with senior year! :)

You can learn the content yourself. Don't need a paper to prove that. Unless you really want to pay money to do those specific classes then maybe; minor sounds like a better option if you're set on the interest. In the end you can only have one career at a time and experience is what really qualifies you

I went to community college got a math degree and then applied to a university, and once I was there I actually got declared as a double major. I at first was thinking about actually going through with it, but then I took a real analysis math course my first semester and I had to drop it. So, the semester after that I retook a real analysis course and I also enrolled in a Vibrations and Waves course, at first both classes were okay at worst and easy at best. But during the middle of the semester I got pounded by both classes, and I was like I can't do this. So, technically I'm only a math major, but officially I'm a double major in math and physics.

I'm planning on double majoring in Physics and Mathematics, I'd like to do a masters in Physics, probably astrophysics and the master level courses require quite a bit of math so I'd be best served by starting early. They are also very compatible which is always a plus. I'm also getting to be very old, turning 27 this year so a BA = 30 before I'm done, Master = 32, Doctorate = 35. Example: I. Acoustic Physics requires the courses: Acoustics, Acoustic transducers + dissertation. II. Nuclear Physics: Quantum Mechanics, Experimental Methods, Nuclear and Particle Physics + dissertation III. Microelectronics: Analogue Integrated Circuits, Digital Integrated Circuits, Design of complex electronic systems + dissertation **All of the masters also require a few additional credits specific to that degree, The whole process can be expedited productively and without negatively impacting the outcome by doing some of the mandatory subjects during the BA, leaving only the most difficult subjects + dissertation. Having to take the prerequisite math subjects for each masters level course would significantly slow down the process. As I said, I'm getting "old" and need to finish up sooner rather than later, additionally I can't rightly start a family until the master is done seeing as how some of the best opportunities are abroad, example: the CERN institute offers: Summer student Program, Internship and Studentships. All of which require a significant investment, having a spouse or children would probably hurt my chances because of the added expense of hiring me over an equally qualified candidate with no such burdens.

It was the worst of times when it came to picking a major. Thoughtfully I went about trying several majors until I came to a decision. Meanwhile all the credits I had gathered worked well to create a second degree. In good time I graduated with two degrees (notice not majors but degrees). That was 15 years ago and in that time having two degrees has been helpful in two ways: 1) Several potential employers find it impressive and it leaves the door slightly open for a career change should I desire it. I'm happy with the path I took but it wasn’t planned. Honestly if my goal was to look impressive, I would have definitely done a bunch of honors things rather than more courses. By the way my degrees are in psychology and interdisciplinary studies in social science with a health studies emphasis (my school's premed suggestion)

Joy Fly dang i bet you’re fortunate that you took the path you took. For me, I’m honestly at a crossroads. I just turned 26 and I feel like I either want to double major in traditional arts and art history or just get a BA in art history and after that get a masters degree to become an art librrarian. Gonna talk to a counselor and see what happens. All I know is I’ve been taking art classes since middle school. I feel like that is where destiny is giving me that opportunity to go that route, it’s that I’m conflicted and stuck on a decision

For my instance i dont feel like i need an external reward, i was a basic average student in high school didnt take any ap classes, and im transferring from a community college but i already work as a licensed cna and im earning my real estate license but the reason i want to earn a double major and have a minor and after that earn my masters and phd is because its a tough job market out there!!! I dont wanna have to struggle like my parents did to put food on the table, im 23 years old and am starting to go back to college, im done working shitty minimum wage jobs, i know it sounds greedy and i know people should follow their passions but im going back to school because i want to make a lot of money, and i know that sounds bad but its the truth and thats what i believe college is an investment if im fishing out thousands of dollars to pay tuition to get ahead and get into a high paying field then i dont and cant major in my "passion" most of my "passions" would be a bad investment and have a slim to none chance of even getting hired id most likely end up working as a waitress or something and i can do my passions in my free time

How the hell can you do so many majors. I am a physics major but I also loveee mathematics, ao naturally I wanted a double major in physics in math. In my uni however, one can only double major after the first year and with good grades. So I just started physics and hell, it is BRUTAL, I am barelly keeping up with the work, I had some very personal problems that kinda took my energy away like a sink, but I think that we, from my physiics and math department, can all agree that the coursework is BRUTAL. For example only 20 of 130 people passed the firat math exam, this is CRAZY. how do you manage? I REALLY wanna learn math as well as physics both very deeply but I really need some advice on this.

Great video! Do you think you could a video that focuses on choosing a major? Because honestly I have NO idea what I want to major in. I realized I love English and History, but I know there are limited jobs available for those majors. I have definitely considered being a teacher/Professor. Anyways, I have always told myself that I want to do something like a Sports Med. Physician, but like I hate chemistry and biology, so do I suffer through all those courses, realizing that the actual major probably barely uses any of that stuff, and the end goal will probably be worth it. But then again, I dont want to work in a hospital, and I know there are limited jobs for Sports Med Physc. that arent located at a hospital. Its just so confusing!!!!

I can't decide between Biology, Geology/Environment, and Physics/Mathematics. This is because I don't know which type of science field is best for me, and they're all related. I've thought about becoming a planetary scientist or astronomer or astrophysicist since I'm intreged by the unknowns of the universe. I was always really good at and enjoyed high school math classes, my favorite being geometry. I'm hesitant on Biology since I don't want to do anything medical or clinical. I am really interested in other topics within Bio though, such as ecology and evolution. I've considered zoology since I've always loved animals (I'm vegan too!). I've considered palentology, because of just how incredibly cool it would be to uncover dinosaur bones from millions of years ago. I also really care about the earth and environment, so I've thought about doing a conservation related career. Obviously I don't know what my future holds. Right now I just want to learn more about the topics that I'm interested in. Tough to make a choice when you don't know what all the careers involve since you haven't experienced them. Whatever I decide, it will probably involve multiple fields within science.
@danielledupreez
@danielledupreez 6 жыл бұрын
Great to hear you’re vegan too! I would say don’t be too concerned with how your major lines up with your career if you’re considering broader work in earth science and environmentalism. If you’re into lots of things, chances are you won’t find a major that feels like “the one” because you can always find another you like just as much. Just pick something you like and stick to it, so you don’t have to worry about it later in your college career. Then, you can change your second major and/or minors as wildly as you like because you already have one locked down. From a practical perspective, I would say if you enjoy physics and find the physics dept at your school is good, go with physics. It will probably open more doors for you than a major in environmental science, for example.
@lutherevans968
@lutherevans968 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! Now that it's three weeks later there are other things that I'm considering. I've been learning more and more about the issues surrounding veganism lately. I feel like I want to help the animals, but I'm not sure how. I'm thinking animal rights/ethics... I learned recently that there's something called Anthrozoology. Programs like that aren't common though, and many animal activists are just volunteers. If I could make a career out of it however, that would be ideal. The other major I've been thinking about is Nutritionism/Dietetics, disease prevention with food. So the same issue just approached from a different angle. Still things that involve science, but also help to make the world a better place. Obviously they're related to environmentalism too... I think the best way to save the planet is to get people to stop eating meat. While I'm still into the other sciences such as paleontology and astronomy, I don't think those kind of discoveries are as important as the issues surrounding veganism since intellectually our world already knows so much. Would love to hear your thoughts, especially since you're vegan, you probably understand where I'm coming from more than many people would.

Yeah sure! I would enter as Studio Art if I were you and take classes for the creative writing major to see if they’re helpful before you add it. But, you should start writing now. There’s no reason you can’t start trying to get something published already. Consider a day job once you graduate and author/illustrator on the side unless you become at least somewhat successful. College is an expensive bill to have weighing over you while you fight for financial survival in the creative world.

What is the "early college" you mentioned? Are you referring to AP credit?

shalar01 AP credit is a bit different. I'm assuming she took some classes at her local community college while in high school

You mentioned in the first few minutes that you went to "early college." What did you mean?
@danielledupreez
@danielledupreez 6 жыл бұрын
+yeremiya wright Early college is a type of high school that, to my knowledge, is common in NC but not as common elsewhere. It's a public school that consists of taking rigorous high school classes for the first two years and then taking exclusively college/university classes at a partner university the last two years. These courses then count for high school requirements and you can transfer them for credit at the university you choose to go to after graduation (this is called dual-enrollment). I can make a video about it sometime!

I disagree, for 2 reasons. 1. It is good to get more knowledge as you can. 2. The more knowledge that you have, the higher you chance will be.

it really depends on the majors that you pick and how they complement each other. having a major just for the sake of "getting knowledge" is not enough anymore these days.

Pre-med is not a major. Most people planning on medical school major in biology for their undergraduate degree. You are all over the place. I think you have serious ADHD. Major what you can get a job in.
I was wrong. You should double major.
