It’s undeniable that food can nourish our body or put it in a state of dis-ease. With mental health conditions and disorders on the rise, we often overlook how the foods that we consume each day have the power to transform and reshape our brain chemistry for better or worse. According to Dr. Georgia Ede, each bite can literally change our minds.
Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with psychiatrist Dr. Georgia Ede to discuss mental health disorders and their connection to our standard American diet. Dr. Ede shares the benefits of a ketogenic diet, the research behind how food changes our brain chemistry, and the top myths about foods marketed as brain superfoods. Dr. Ede also shares tips from practice and walks us through how we can nourish, protect, and energize our brains for optimal health.
Dr. Georgia Ede. Dr. Ede is a board-certified psychiatrist specializing in college mental health and nutritional psychiatry. She has 18 years of clinical experience in hospitals, community health centers, specialty clinics, and private practices, utilizing medications and psychotherapy to help adults of all ages. -What ultra-processed foods do to our brains and the symptoms that are not normal
-The standard American diet examples for all three meals
-The impact of insulin resistance on the brain
-The top myths about the brain
-Dr. Ede’s patient testimonials and research
-Four categories that can lead to the harm in the brain

I was eating standard American diet for years and didn’t know that was the cause of my depression, anxiety, and anger issues. I did keto years ago and it “fixed” me. My personality literally changed overnight from a crazy bitch to a pleasant person. It was then I realized food ABSOLUTELY impacts mental health and stability.

Totally agree, I never have compared myself to anyone else. I have my own brain and live my life for me, not for anyone else. I dont want to know about gossip, why would I waste my time and become sick in the head! But I really can’t stand the idiots who “believe” the news, and think they have the right to JUDGE people as being weird/paedophiles etc, from untruth most of the time. These are the sick’ people we need to watch out for. And ALL Jealousy should be ignored not even a conversation with these sorry individuals.

Thanks for the interesting interview. Beside all the refined sugars, oils of lowest quality and processing etc., soils nowadays are getting depleted of minerals (like potassium), vegetables are intoxicated with pesticides/herbicides and environmental pollutants, they’re genetically modified, and get treated with numerous chemical agents and get wrapped in plastic and other detrimental packaging materials that affect the food and thus disrupt the balance of our hormones, the gut microbiome etc.

Due to my parents crappy genes we got. I have no choice but to be low carb. My metabolism health can’t take carbs. Last we heard younger brother abandoned the family 7 years ago, anyhow last we heard he was 300 pounds. Both he and I have battled our weight. Lost 70 + pounds as a teenager at 15. Have gained and lost since then, now my mom’s health and stress has caused me to gain 50 pounds and stubborn weight to get off. Insulin resistance……doing keto / carnivore as best as I can. I have a keto breath machine my number this morning was 9 which I am burning 🔥 fat for fuel slow but I have room to go higher. Using a ton of coconut oil even ordered coconut oil capsules. Upping omega 3 fish capsule supplements to get extra DHA INTO my brain. 🧠 Brain hasn’t worked all my life. Still can’t drive a car. Almost 40. In ketosis starting point. No sugar or carbs in diet. Not going diabetic like my parents. Only 40 **39 *** 😢😢😢hell no.

Thank you for your knowledge and your integrity. The nutrition message is often distorted by an industry that thrives on peddling bad health. We were a stronger and healthier society before chain supermarkets and television. Natural foods, lots of water, a 16 hour fasting window, a drastic reduction of starches, and a long walk, is a strategy that is sustainable for those of us in retirement. Magic shortcuts just going to get you in trouble.

The Mediterranean diet does have, in many modern cases, a high carbohydrates content nowadays, since flour is relatively cheap, but most persons use more of the foods devoid of this, and I have been raised on lesser dependency on "pasta" plates, and at 86 years in a few months, the family doctor wishes that his 60 year old patients would be as healthy as myself. The diet MUST vary during the week, Using less processed foods. Also in the USA, that I have visited often, I see very few that "walk", not even getting out from the car when ordering their McDonalds and then eating it. I try to walk for up to two hours a day.

@BarryAnderson 3 hours ago THE ABSOLUTE WORST BREAKFAST CHOICE OF YOUR LIFE description is as follows ...... @728huey 3 months ago So apparently it's cereal and orange juice. One thing to remember about the cereal and orange juice we consume today compared to what our grandparents and great-grandparents ate back in the day. Back then cereals didn't contain high fructose corn syrup and preservatives, and orange juice back then was squeezed by hand. Also, the grains used to make our wheat and corn flours are treated with glyphosate (Roundup) which destroys the gut biome. In addition, the orange juice sold in supermarkets has been seriously adulterated, often squeezed and juiced at the factory and placed into huge vats that are vacuum sealed, thus degrading nearly all the nutritional value from the juice. When it is processed and packaged into containers they add sugar, orange essential oil, and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) to the juice to make it drinkable again. So breakfast is already highly processed, and it's the consumption of this adulterated food that causes inflammation in the body and causes cuts in the arteries that scar up.

The key takeaways from Dr. Georgia Ede's perspective on diet and mental health are: 1. **Negative Impact of Processed Foods:** Consumption of processed meats, sugary drinks, and refined carbohydrates is harmful to both physical and mental health. These foods contribute to inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance in the brain. 2. **Importance of a Healthy Diet:** A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins is recommended for better health and longevity. Such a diet positively influences brain chemistry and overall well-being. 3. **Dangers of Modern Diet:** The modern diet, high in ultra-processed foods and unhealthy fats like refined vegetable oils, is linked to an epidemic of mental health disorders. These foods undergo extensive chemical processing and are detrimental to brain health. 4. **Myth of Superfoods:** Commonly touted superfoods like blueberries, red wine, and dark chocolate do not have the magical health benefits often claimed. Adding them to an unhealthy diet does not significantly improve brain health. 5. **Benefits of the Ketogenic Diet:** The ketogenic diet, which is high in fats, moderate in protein, and low in carbohydrates, can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain. It stabilizes blood sugar and insulin levels and provides an alternative energy source for the brain. 6. **Exercise and Muscle Health:** Regular exercise and maintaining muscle health are crucial for improving metabolism and insulin sensitivity. 7. **Personalized Dietary Strategies:** Different levels of dietary strategies can be adopted depending on individual metabolic health and goals. Personalizing the diet is key to its effectiveness and sustainability. 8. **Critique of Nutrition Epidemiology:** Dr. Ede criticizes the field of nutrition epidemiology for its reliance on biased and unreliable data, advocating for more scientifically rigorous research. 9. **Empowerment Through Knowledge:** Understanding the impact of diet on health and mental well-being is empowering. Dr. Ede encourages readers to make informed choices about their diet and lifestyle. 10. **Holistic Approach to Diet:** The focus should be on a diet that nourishes, protects, and energizes the brain, emphasizing the importance of avoiding antinutrients and refined carbohydrates and maintaining healthy glucose and insulin levels.

Why does this interview avoid any conversation around cholesterol which is part of the metabolism conversation? Blood sugar and cholesterol are linked. Often, folks who need intervention with their diets also have high cholesterol. How does this diet specifically address this?

Eat more oatmeal and less empty carbs. Grain 🌾🌾 products aren't as bad for you as she claims in this video, that many breads and the like turn instantly into sugar in your bloodstream. Fasting also is little addressed here. If you can go without food for 24 or 48 hours, it helps rectify your metabolism.

You're right we didn't talk about that (so much to talk about we couldn't cover everything). I go into a lot of detail about this in the book but the short answer is that ketogenic diets almost always improve multiple markers of metabolic health: triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, blood sugar levels, appetite, inflammation, insulin levels, and blood pressure. The only test that sometimes looks "worse" on a ketogenic diet is LDL cholesterol. LDL is really complicated...Look up the work of Dr. David Diamond--he has some great videos on the subject of LDL

I am a bit puzzled by the statement at 1:12:00 that grains and cereal products are always fortified. Is this specifically a reference to processed foods such as breakfast cereals, enriched white flour, etc? I don't think one would encountered any fortified grains when preparing one's own food from standard traditional ingredients (other than, perhaps, enriched flour, if one uses that).

So what do you eat for 3 meals a day 7 days per week. Eggs and bacon every morning. Meat and vegetables for lunch and dinner every day. Even the meat and vegetables most of us buy are problematic. Many of us are sitting a lot but doing a lot of brain work and working longer hours. We also may not be able to eat when we’re hungry or should eat because of the demands of our work.

But don't these polyphenols found in berries, and chocolate etc support the gut microbiome, which in turn supports brain health? It's more than just chemical compounds that directly impact brain function, right? It's about providing a diverse array of food sources found in the plants we consume to support the garden in our gut so that they produce postbiotics that support our cognition and moods.

Very interesting video. Many thanks.😊. It underlines a lot of information I have heard over many years 😊. I remember seeing a programme about "The Blue Zone", which not only looked at diet, but also the social aspects of the vigorous old folk. Common factors were: purpose, activity ( e.g., growing good food ), low stress, emotional support , Organic food ( i.e., no junk ), Comparitive quiet ; comfortable in community....😊🌿 The modern urban life with huge stresses : junk food ; anxiety ( crime, terrorists ..) ; " Burn-out" ; Isolation, overcrowding, pollution, imported cultural differences, National debt ; corruption; " Tribes ", Drugs, slavery; aggression ; Covid ; fear of society breaking down...😢. epidemics of obesity and diabetes...🤔😢... Those great old folks in "The Blue Zone" somehow avoided most of the modern urban problems....😊🌹 💙🥀👍🦉🎼😊.... The other point I wanted to make was that my favourite KZbin doctor is Dr. Mark Hyman , who does "Keto" and "Vegan": he calls it "PEGAN". 🇬🇧👍🦉📖🌹💙😊🇬🇧

You never actually "skip" breakfast. Whenever you eat after a long period of "not" eating, you are breakfasting. If folks would stop categorizing food, it would be a step toward healthier eating. No such category as "breakfast food".Salmon can be your first meal of the day.
