The story of the 1991 Washington Huskies is a unique one. The team had to overcome major adversity before the season ever began, and yet still put together a season that was arguably more dominant than any other in the history of college football. Let's take a stroll down memory lane and re-live the Dawgs' glory from a quarter-century ago.

@@davidalhadeff8238 I said after they trailed to Nebraska they cruised to a blowout victory. Nebraska didn't have the players to hang with the physical nature of that team for 4 quarters. And it showed. That's why the score ended so lopsided.

Don’t forget RB Napoleon Kaufman who was a Freshman in 1991. Nap was the 3rd RB behind Beno Bryant and Jay Berry. He rushed for over 1,000 yards each of the next 3 years and then was the 18th overall pick in the 1995 NFL Draft by Oakland. James Clifford led the team in tackles in 1989 then missed all of 1990 with an injury and then was a backup most of 1991 before starting again in 1992.

What do you mean "dont forget"?... this was about the 91 Huskies. You yourself note he was 3rd on the depth chart ... and he only ran for 300 yds that year. Respectable 4.6 yd a carry. But this was about the 91 team. Nothing to forget...

I am as big a Husky fan as there is, and I do think this is one of the best college football teams of all time...but I think they broke a sweat against Cal and Nebraska. The fact that they pulled those games out on the road against great teams is a testament to how good they were, though.

Eh... Cal? Yea it came down to a last play. But thats a last play to MAYBE tie the game. As for Nebraska? Huskies offense were stifled thru 3... hit the gas and when they finally got it goin it was no problem. This is not my op... just look at the stat line where the huskies would end up scoring 27 unanswered points, end up w 200 more rushing yds and 110 more passing yds to illustrate just that.

Down 21-9 in the 3rd qtr at Nebraska,in front of what several players said was the most intimidating crowd they ever played in front of,players on that team were breaking a sweat according to the book "Fear No Man" about that team.If this year's teams D can keep improving they could continue to dominate as they have through the first 5.

I also remember that they split the National Championship with the Miami Hurricanes that year. That could have been a great game if they weren't so stubborn back then. A playoff would have been better than what actually happened by basing it off of polls.

The 1990 Huskies were really good too. They smushed a #5 ranked USC 31-0 and put up 46 on the Big 10 Champion Iowa in the Rose Bowl. They lost 20-14 at National Champion Colorado and lost an inexplicable game at home to UCLA. But that team was crazy good too. The 1991 team was merely the 1990 team a year older. I live in Seattle and i was convinced this team was going to go undefeated like i was about the Seahawks winning the superbowl in 2013.

@Jamal Greasy I do like your comment and content. I based my choice on a number of deeper things most do not look at. The "Character" of the 91 Huskies ,,, believe it or not was super if not protege as a whole due to their family backgrounds. I never remembered players names before or after this 91 team but I can name most of them due to their high levels of being awesome personalities, such as Hoffman, Cunningham, and not to mention the countries NFL # 1 draft pick Steve Emtman. If you go through the Line, this team scored the highest ever in the draft. More Husky players from this team played pro ball than any other one team in all of college history. Not only that but a few of the seniors from the 90 team made 1st round draft picks. You have to look at the overall team and whats important, and with this team they all gave it their all in the sense they for once admitted they knew they were going to be National champs after the Nebraska Game. California Bears were the toughest team the Huskies had played that year, Michigan was just an average away game for the DAWGS.

I don't know. That 91 UW team might have had the greatest defense in the history of college football to go along with an incredibly talented offense. I'm not sure if any team has ever dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball the way the 91 Huskies did and they had ludicrous speed at every skill position. They also had the greatest college football player I've ever seen. Steve Emtman. He was a Heisman trophy finalist as an interior defensive lineman.
@jackprecip5389
@jackprecip5389 3 жыл бұрын
That was a great team, but your summation goes a little over the top. Calling wins against Nebraska, and especially Cal , as "hardly breaking a sweat" is a bit much. Nebraska was beating them 21-9 with only 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, and the Cal game was tight the whole way, with Cal having the ball inside the Washington 25 yard line on two drives in the last 5 minutes only down 7, including a receiver with his hands on a Cal pass in the Washington end zone on the 2cnd to last play of the game. I think those games would qualify as having plenty of perspiration. Not taking anything away from UW though, they beat up Nebraska in the 4rth quarter, and held steady against Cal, and those were both VERY GOOD teams (especially Cal who went on to destroy Clemson in the Citrus Bowl that year) that they beat on the road. I still feel robbed that we didn't get to see Washington vs Miami for the undisputed title, as that would have been one heck of a game. College Football hierarchy was so greedy and stuck in the past back then, that they preferred keeping bowl commitments and the money tied to it rather than seeing two undefeated teams clearly better than everyone else at seasons end playing each other.

Please. '91 Washington would have utterly skullfucked '91 Miami. Remember, that Miami team was coached by the mediocre Dennis Erickson and quarterbacked by Gino Torretta. The defenses were probably close to a wash, though I would still give the nod to the Huskies, but Washington was a total powerhouse on offense, mixing a dynamic passing attack with a hard-nosed running game. Miami's finesse offense would not have been able to move the ball on Washington. It would have been a similar game to the one Miami played against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl the following year. Washington - 35 Miami - 17

How many draft picks did the 2002 Buckeyes have compared to the 2002 Hurricanes? I bet not as many, yet that didn't prevent the Buckeyes from beating the Hurricanes that year because they were a better coached team. And that's what matters here. Coaching, not talent. 1991 Washington had one of the best coaches in college football history, while the 2001 Hurricanes had Larry Coker. Do you honestly believe Larry Coker could ever out-coach a guy like Don James, LOL?

Didn't they lose to UW that year or was it the year before? In fact the Miami coach at the time said the Huskies should be playing Oklahoma not Florida St for national championship BCS game. Maybe you should talk to your coach of that team. Just saying.

Yeah....27 years ago. No titles before and no titles since. Hang onto those dreams, kids! LOL! Funny, I read the buck futtler comments and others who always say that it's UW mentioned as an all time great and Miami '91 is NEVER mentioned and I'll be honest....I never hear of EITHER team mentioned as an all time great team.....must just be a UW fans thing as far as all the best ever talk is concerned. Even amongst Miami fans this '91 team is listed below the teams from 2001, 1987, 1989 who won the title and even some others who just missed like 1988, 2002, 1986, 1990, 2000 etc. You know, their '91 accomplishments are kind of lost in a pile with all their other successful teams so yeah, I get it if UW fans think their '91 edition is better. You've only got a few things wrong with the assumption though: 1 - Miami beat both teams who finished 3 and 4 in the final polls. Both PSU and FSU were 11-2. Miami beat both, UW beat neither. Oh, and that Michigan team you spanked by 20 in the Rose Bowl? FSU beat them in Ann Arbor 51-31 before Miami beat them in Tally that year. Oops! :) 2 - The Pac 10 wasn't great that year, but what else is new? USC is the gold standard in the conference. They were 3-8 that year. Cal was 10-2. That's really nice! Stanford was 8-4. That's great. 3 - Talking heads who agree with you that UW was better doesn't make it so. By 1991 there was so much Miami fatigue after the prior eight seasons that everyone just wanted to hand the title in it's entirety to Don James because he was such a nice guy. Would have been the wrong thing to do to those Miami kids who also earned it - maybe even more because they beat better top shelf teams but hey, whatever! Sorry, Chris Fowler, you can't ignore Miami no matter how much you'd like to. Anyway, it's all nice for the sake of argument to look at something from 27 years ago and try to spin it to your liking but in the end, both schools have to be happy with their "PART" of the title and live with the fact that neither is an all time great. The were just two really nice 12-0 programs that one season. The next year, Miami got trucked by an Alabama team for the title who didn't let teams run the ball a lick whereas UW did lose the Rose Bowl to a Schembechler Michigan team that FINALLY got the Rose Bowl correct. :) Cheers, mates!!

You're wrong. Washington has 4 claimed national titles. The 1960 Huskies defeated Minnesota 17-7 in the Rose Bowl who back in those days the NCAA awarded the National Championship at the end of the regular season, before the bowl games. Washington dominated Minnesota in that Rose Bowl and was recognized by several publications as the 1960 National Champions. There's a 1960 National Champions banner hanging in Husky stadium. The 1984 Washington Huskies finished #2 after beating Oklahoma who was ranked #2 going into the Orange Bowl and beat Oklahoma 27-17. BYU Was awarded the national title over Washington because they were undefeated, while Washington lost one game that year. That BYU team played in an easy conference and didn't play even one ranked team all year. BYU beat a 6-5 Michigan team 28-21 in the Holiday Bowl. Many publications awarded Washington with the 1984 national Championship. Because of the NCAAs shitty formats they had in the old days which cost the Washington Huskies 2 National Championships (1960 & 1984). Also after stomping Iowa in the Rose Bowl, one major college football publication awarded the 1990 Huskies the 1990 National Championship...although that 1990 team clearly wasn't deserving because they got upset at home late in the season to UCLA. In addition the Washington Huskies still hold the all-time undefeated streAk in college football history. The 1910-1920 Huskies were 58-0-3 during that ten year period. But the NCAA did not award National Championships back then. They started the AP rankings somewhere around 1936. That 1991 Washington Husky team started what would eventually be a 22 game winning streak before losing after an 8-0 start in 1992. That 1991 Washington Husky football team was also recognized by the Pac 10 media members as the best Pac 10 team ever, men or womens, in any sport in the history of the Pac 10. The Pac 10 use to call themselves the conference of champions because of all the national titles the Pac 10 has one in all sports, men and women, combined. More than any other conference. So, when that 1991 team was voted by Pac 10 media members as the best team in all Pac 10 sports history...that tells you how dominant that team was. Also, Washington had 27 straight winning seasons from 1977 to 2003. One of the longest streaks in College Football History. So, no, Husky fans are not spinning how Great that 1991 team was...any college football pundit or respected coach or analyst who was around back then to witness that team has said that team is one of the greatest college football teams ever, period. And for you to say Washington had never won anything before that is totally wrong. I layed out the history. 4 claimed National Titles. You are right that since 2003, the Huskies had a long stretch of mostly losing sesons until around 2009, when they were competitive under Steve Sarkisian, but were never very good, until Chris Peterson took over and they had a couple of good years cultivating in the 2016 College Football Playoff, which they list to Alabama 24-7.

Washington would have pounded anyone that season, including Miami. Their defense was the best ever. Nobody could score on them. Averaging 9 points against for the entire season including the bowl game. While averaging about 40 on offense. Who does that??

Gino Torretta would have thrown at least five picks against this Washington defense. You saw how ineffective he was against 'Bama in 1992, so what makes you think he would have done any better against an even greater defense in '91 Washington?
