Embrace the suck. Pretend that you’re a little kid banging on Tupperware. Kids think that the racket sounds awesome no matter what. Keep practicing and eventually, the noise coming out of your instrument will match the music in your head.

I cannot love this enough!❤ I started playing in the mid-80s (the dawn of lead/shred bass). Playing became so competitive and demanding that it wasn’t fun. Practice was just….laborious. By the early 2000s, I just had to completely deconstruct what the bass is, and…just like you said….play what made me feel good. That meant a 4-string Fender P Bass and a Musicman Stingray for me. I went back to the timeless players like James Jamerson, Willie Weeks, Nathan East, Nathan Watts, Bob Babbitt, Larry Graham, Donald Dunn, John Paul Jones, Roger Glover… I’ve never been happier playing.

This is true. Lately I've been feeling kinda down and its been a bit hard to pick up my bass. But when I do, I always feel great. I'm often hard on myself about the way I practice since I am mostly self taught and I often feel exactly how you described; like I'm not making any progress. You are an inspiration to me though, as I'm sure you are to others. Now I'm going to do exactly as you said and make some noise. That should remedy the blues a bit.

Thank you, I needed this right about now. Yesterday, my instructor sent me home with Oye Como VA by Santana (and I love it !!) along with a couple of exercises. This is a great song for beginners !! I started to feel discouraged because I just can not sound smooth. I've started to think that I my be one of those people that will always sound choppy which is definitely not Cool 🥴.

Can you advise/recommend some strings that can give you a upright double bass jazz sound
@JohnFoxBass9 ай бұрын
LaBella black nylon tapewounds. And if you can put them on a Rob Allen Deep 4, you will sound EXACTLY like an upright bass.
